- Ruggedized: Paean is a pack system, with an upper hardcase made out of lightweight agrinium to contain particularly fragile items, and a trio of lower-hanging pouches made out of defensa textile for more readily available and more commonly used items. This construction makes Paean fairly durable in harsh environments, whether its the wilderness of an Outer Rim world or a battlefield deep in the Core.
- Atmospheric Processor: The bottom of Paean's hard case contains an atmospheric processor which filters the local atmosphere through a pair of filters to refill gas and liquid cylinders found within the packs bottom. This allows Paean's wearer to have a constantly fresh supply of oxygen and water for any patients he or she may run across.

- Bulky: Paean is fairly bulky, being a full-sized, hardcased backpack. While not horribly heavy, it's weight and size isn't going to go unnoticed, especially by someone trying to move quickly.
Aid bags and med kits come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and formats, but almost all provide much more comprehensive care than the typical medpac along with a greater number of supplies. The Paean-series Medical Backpack is Lucerne Biological System's entry into this market, largely designed to compete with the older ECM-598, a favorite of many combat medics and outer rim scouts. The size and format of Paean makes it fairly easy to carry around for the average person, but it is still large enough to pack a fair amount of equipment and supplies in it.
Unlike some other medical kit, Paean is actually designed to be centered around the pair of advanced Fastmed Emergency Medpacs found inside it, which serve as the basic foundation of Paean's abilities - the medpac not only contains the basic medicines, but also an advanced health regenerator and diagnostic computer. It's common practice for many medics to have different species databanks loaded into each medpac's diagnostic computer, providing a greater breadth of knowledge of possible patients to treat. A Mediflux Field Replicator allows the user to provide antidotes and nutrients to the patients while an onboard atmospheric processor can provide concentrated oxygen and water to patients. In austere conditions, it's not unheard of for patients to be suffering from other effects from the environment, and to that end, Paean includes All-weather cloaks and Pneuma-series Rebreathers to provide protection to patients from the extremes of temperatures and hostile atmospheres. A foldable repulsorlift stretcher can allow the Paean's user to more easily move a patient out of harms way and to better treatment facilities. But perhaps the greatest selling point of the Paean are the dozens of advanced proprietary drugs made by Lucerne Biological Sytems and included in large numbers within the pack, from pain-numbing Vinchaine Spray to PlasVol blood substitutes to Bio-Bacta Max and a number of innovative but general purpose cures for radiation poisoning and infection.
Paean contains more advanced medical supplies and items than many medpacs - consequently is works best in the hands of either a medical professional or someone who has taken the time to learn and understand the equipment as well as the basic physiology of the species of patient they're intending to treat. It's commonly issued to combat medics within planetary defense forces allied to the Silver Jedi Concord or the Directorate. It also is a reasonably common med kit that's stashed aboard private ships, especially those that tend to go to the wilder areas of space.
