Strengths:
- Firepower. The Paladin has a vicious amount of firepower both from its dual Vortex Cannons and from its regular batteries. This allows it to pummel opposing ships with overwhelming firepower.
- Ironclad. With double redundant shields and thick armour plating, the Paladin can tank damage as well as any ship in the galaxy.
- Linebreaker. Designed to get close to the enemy and mangle them, the Paladin is especially good in slugging matches where its vast amount of guns and protection can overwhelm most opposition.
- Attack Craft. The Paladin lacks any fighter escort or defence guns. As a result it requires support from other ships to ensure enemy bombers do not prey on it.
- Sluggish. Though of passible speed, the Paladin’s massive bulk make turning it a somewhat tricky proposition.
- Backstab. With no weapons which can fire rearwards and the most unarmoured and unprotected sections at the rear with the engines, getting behind the Paladin not only makes one safe, but gives one the chance to inflict damage.
- Fire Arcs. The Paladin has some restrictive fire arcs for its heavy battery weapons. This can lead to a wise opponent using this and its sluggish nature against it.
Description: With the majority of the Coalition fleet completed, Admiral Stahlmann could go back and consider what ships were missing from his grand new fleet. The answer came at once; a new Star Destroyer capable of taking on any ship of equal size in the galaxy. This ship would need to have very heavy protection and firepower to fulfil this role, but when it was built it would be formidable.
And so, the Admiral took the basic design of the Crusader and radically reworked it. If the Crusader was a ‘vanilla’ Destroyer, the newly designed Paladin would have every topping and condiment possible added. Seeing a chance to throw in his Vortex cannons, the Admiral added two of them, then added in battery on battery of heavy ion and turbolaser cannons. The end result was something with absolutely lethal firepower both at range but mainly at closer range.
To power the Paladin the Colossus reactor was specifically constructed to allow the extra shielding combined with the ship’s weaponry to operate. Special armour was brought in to make the Paladin have multiple layers of armour. This protection would allow it to absorb significant amounts of damage without compromising weaponry.
Of course, there was one glaring hole in the Paladin’s abilities; attack craft, or rather the lack thereof. In order to make the hull so strong, and to make way for the reactor and Vortex cannons, the entire hanger complex of the ship had to be completely excised. Only a small ventral hanger for dropships could connect with the ship now.
Furthermore, in order to maximise its firepower against capital ships, the entire selection of defence guns were removed. Therefore, the Paladin requires and needs escort by frigates and attack craft or else it risks being overwhelmed and picked apart by small ships.
Another key weakness is the increased weight and mass of the ship makes it hard to manoeuvre. An enemy getting behind the Paladin can likely stay there and inflict damage without any chance of reply.
The Paladin is a powerful ship, but it requires integration and support to be used effectively. Like all vessels it cannot win a battle alone, but when combined with the rest of the Coalition fleet, it can provide a formidable asset.
Development Thread: YES and YES
Intent: To create an extremely powerful star destroyer to act as an ultimate Star Destroyer for the Coalition. Unlike the Crusader, this goes off spec to provide a massively armed ship with extremely heavy armour. Gun for gun, this ship should be a match for any comparable sized craft in the galaxy. However, it naturally has weaknesses. It is slow, heavy and lacks attack craft defences entirely. It is also extremely rare and thus is a big investment to take into battle.
