PD-110 "Windbreaker" Active Protection System

laser.jpg

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

  • Intent: To create an APS for infantry and vehicles.
  • Canon Link: N/A
  • Restricted Missions: N/A
  • Primary Source: Active Protection Systems
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: Jaeger Solutions & Aegis Systems
  • Model: PD-110 "Windbreaker" Class APS
  • Affiliation: Open-Market
  • Modularity:
Scaleable to vehicles, but that does mean the smaller the system the less effective its defensive. In no way can an armor mounted 'Windbreaker''s handle large scale anti vehicle weaponry, but can deal with the likes of light anti vehicle munitions and small tracking rounds. So long as it can detect a physical object, it can at least attempt a defense; depending on what that is.

[*]Production: Mass-Produced
[*]Material: Duraplast
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Preemptive Detection Systems
    Doppler Detection
  • Infrared Detection
  • Ultraviolet Detection
  • Visual Detection

[*]Numerous Soft Kill Measures
  • Sensory Disruption
  • Augmentation of Signature
  • Reduction of Signature
  • Lock Breaking Measures

[*]Numerous Hard Kill Measures
  • Anti-Explosive Laser
  • Miniture Rocket Measures
  • Backup Flak Support

Strengths:
  • Iron Curtain -
Because of the numerous backup systems, soft kill and hard kill measurements, and the advanced detection systems all in place; this APS is designed to destroy every smart projectile that comes at it within a few meters; depending on the model. For standard infantry armor, it can mean taking down thermal detanators, anti-infantry rockets, most shoulder mounted missiles, amongst a few others; while more advanced and larger models can defend against large scale ballistics missiles and other physical weapons. It does this by firing specialized lasers, last resort flak rounds, or miniaturized rocket munitions to meet enemy munitions in a glorious explosion. That is the hard kill procedure, at least.

For more intelligent munitions, it has a preemptive soft kill procedure meant to confuse or otherwise unlock rockets or anti-anything explosives meant to destroy the user or vehicles this is equipped on. Effectively able to send out small laser munitions to confuse it, disrupt normal sensory data through various methods, or otherwise reducing said signature make for an extremely difficult target to hit. The hardkill is strictly reserved for ‘dumb’ launches, ones not so easily handled.

Weaknesses:
  • Physically Based -
Unfortunately, the system can not defend against energy based weaponry as of yet. Although attemped by Jaeger, any weapon fired at the user or vehicle based in the energy spectrum or tibanna gas realm is entirely immune from the effects of the 'Windbreaker'. Its completely possible to bypass the component in its entirety depending on the means of offense, making it especially cumbersome and expensive for a rather specialized tool.

[*]Highly Sensitive -
  • Many of its soft kill features too can be countered through ion radiation or EMP strikes. The weapon is certainly viable to confusion on its own, and both electrically dependent measures are enough in passing to harm its sensors significantly, effectively cutting it down to nothing should a direct hit happen, or stop it from blocking launched munitions if barely washed over in it. It should be said that they are a highly sensitive system, and any damage to the internals can severely affect performance. As such, all maintenance should be done by a certified Jaeger Solutions specialist.

DESCRIPTION

To add to Jaeger Solution’s repertoire of armor components, they have no released an Active Protection system capable of detecting, diverting, or destroying any munitions sent its way. Made with the need to protect heavily armored infantry on the field, it has since been scaled to be put on tanks and other walkers alike to better allow protection from high grades physically based munitions used more often in decimating otherwise immune vehicles. In short, the defense system is capable of countering a number of otherwise powerful offensive tactics.

Under Review. First of all, thank you for your patience. Now unto the sub itself.

These hard kill additions are going to require a bit more exposition. I imagine each countermeasure would have its own weight, size, ammo capacity. And for so many options I imagine this would be extremely heavy on a person wearing armor. So heavy along with the detection systems and soft kill measures that I fail to see how this tech would even be possible on anything less than a fighting vehicle.

Can you find me some other examples of man-usable APS in either Star Wars or IRL? Otherwise I'm going to suggest that you make this a vehicle only system.

There actually is not any real life or canon options for this; but I can explain.

The anti-explosive lasers mentioned on the personal based system are about the same as as laser pointer with some oomph. Not strong enough to say, hurt someone like a normal blaster, but enough to disorientate the device. Considering the strength of the Dur-24 Wrist Laser, and the comparative size of this one, I'd consider this pretty alright. You may however, may have a different opinion; but I'll continue regardless.

The miniature rocket measures are very small, consider one or two in inch size missiles with no real explosive capacity, and only 2 or 3 on any given system (small ones especially). These are more mobile and fast rockets with high G's in terms of acceleration, rather than a high payload option. Its very small, and a backup to the laser should it not actually work; but something I am willing to get rid of if needed.

The last one is more a last ditch resort, with no barrel and only a singular round loaded to a final layer of protection. Should something bypass every single soft and hard kill measurement up to that point, this is a singular wall of lead to stop it. Its not meant to be pretty, not meant to be a kill measure since it lacks the actual pressure to penetrate someone, its only meant to preemptively ignite whatever explosive is coming towards someone.

What do you think? If you think its not viable for a personal system despite my descriptions, feel free to tell me. I simply wanted to innovate with something very small for powered armor and small 'Calvary' units.

Excuse the delay.

After some consideration. I don't think this is not viable as a personal defense system. Pair this with some strong armor and you have a extremely potent protection system. However, perhaps it can be modified for use with vehicles. If the actual use of the system is sensible, we can definitely revisit the tech in the future. How does that sound?

While I think the idea of this being a vehicle module is fine, I'd actually prefer it to be an armor one. In your opinion, what would need to be done to properly adjust it to be a balanced armor module rather than a vehicles?

[member="The Major"]

That's easy. Something heavy and lumbering that could be used to stop something like rockets. Or a device that only had enough charge to stop a single shot of a lower caliber projectile. In this way the device could be balanced in case the user is also wearing heavy armor. How does that sound as a compromise. We could say higher caliber ammunition would penetrate anyway.

Apologies. Was on an unexpected LOA.

Anyway, in no way can this submission stop bullets of any sort; only relatively slow large projectiles. Does this alter the judgement, as what you described seemed more like an anti-bullet defensive measure; which this certainly is not.

Does not imply to me that only slows kinetic projectiles. Here's what I can offer to move this sub along:
-Use this only on vehicles with its current wording to show us how it would actually be used in RP.
-Change the wording completely to significantly weaken what this does, which perhaps can get a modification down the road to upgrade it. I highly suggest this since you want to push this as an open market item.
-Second chance the sub if you insist on presenting it as it stands. I cannot accept it as is and ss far as I'm concerned your intent in its use isn't enough. I need the wording to be exact.

Dutifully yours,
---Major
