- Central AI Administration for Increased Automation
- Sturdy: For a vessel of its size, the Cutler-class is quite durable, able to withstand sustained weapons fire simply by the strength of its armor.
- Automation: With droid brains and a central AI program running in the background, the Cutler’s crew complement can be kept to a minimum.
- Atmospheric Capable: Self-explanatory; the Cutler can enter a planet’s atmosphere and land if the mission requires it.
- Poor Maneuverability: The Cutler has only been equipped with low-strength RCS thrusters for purposes of maneuvering, leaving the vessel sluggish when making turns or rolls.
- Droid Brains and Automation Protocols: The automated systems of the corvette present ample targets for hostile hacking attacks.
- No Ventral Weaponry: Self-explanatory; the Cutler has a major unguarded weak-point.
As the PhoenixDrive Corporation’s formerly repair-centered production lines began to expand to encompass shipbuilding, the company quickly realized the poor nature of its defensive capabilities, especially considering how rapidly its shipyards and supply chains were expanding. In response, Phoenix’s growing design team would be tasked with the creation of the Cutler-class– a relatively easy to crew and produce vessel that could guard inbound and outbound merchant convoys or the sprawling PhoenixDrive shipyards themselves.
The finished product would be described by its creators as somewhat of a blunt brick, both for its blocky outer shell and for the relative lack of complexity hidden behind its hull plating. In combat, the Cutler-class was to function in a similarly blunt manner, directly engaging hostile vessels and relying on their sheer durability to absorb incoming fire. The class’s set of medium ion cannons could function in tandem with salvos of ion pulse missiles to quickly disable most similarly-sized ships, rather than outright destroying them. For the bands of pirates the corvettes would most often be deployed to repel, this tactic was more than enough, and quickly led to a rapid plummet in the amount of Phoenix assets lost to raiders.
As the reputation and success of the Cutler class began to spread, PhoenixDrive would begin to receive requests to more actively market the vessels. And within months of the Cutler corvette’s initial launch from spacedock, the design was entered into mass production, quickly finding itself within a variety of forces– from planetary defense fleets to the fleets of large merchant companies.
