- Able to transmit power from a sun over vast distances through a solar system.
- Long Distance Power: By using solar plasma to charge silicon particles the Phaethon is able to transmit that energy to a space station or satellite.
- Not a weapon: The charged silicon particles are unable to damage a target, effectively just throwing sand against a ship’s armour. Even civilian grade hulls can shrug off these strikes. Over time they may wear down armour, but not anytime soon.
Solar energy had long been touted as a clean alternative to other fuels, a safe way to power your station, your facilities without causing irreparable harm to the galaxy we all have to live in for future generations to deal with. The problem is, as technological sophistication increased the demand for power increased proportionally. Simple solar cells were no longer enough to meet the demands of modern facilities and technologies without creating massive dyson-sphere like farms, which would just contribute to the harm you were looking to avoid.
When Locke and Key settled down to examine this problem they decided to spin the problem on its head. Instead of relying on light, why not draw on the power of the sun itself to accomplish the task?
This was accomplished via a multi-part system. The first section of which was the Phaethon Solar Well.
The solar well was built with one purpose in mind, to sit on the edge of a sun, and transfer that energy to a target.
The base of the solar well was an open port through which plasma could enter, it’s energy charging particles of silicone which were then fired out of a railgun at the top of the solar well. The charged particles would travel through space in this way till it either reached it’s target or a hyperspace cannon, positioned safely away from the sun, which would accelerate the particles into a micro-jump towards their final destination.
Through this method, the solar well was able to deliver charged particles to a target where it can be converted into power.
