PRODUCTION INFORMATION

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Portable: Phantasm is briefcase sized, making it more portable than permanently installed holo-projectors but with significantly more features and projecting power than the typical handheld holo-projector. A duraplast case makes it fairly resilient if employed in the field while a built-fusion generator allows it to be operated for hours on end even in the absence of conventional power infrastructure.
  • Area Project: Phantasm uses multiple light projectors with cutting-edge projection technology, allowing it produce holos anywhere in a 10 meter radius of the device, including large holos that can encompass this entire radius. This allows Phantasm to produce large, complex holos portraying such things as battlefields in minute, real time for battlefield commanders. For those engaged in combat and espionage endeavors, the Phantasm’s extended range opens up a myriad of potential ploys and deceptions, such as creating phantom, static vehicles or the appearance of additional individuals – with Phantasm’s recording option, it can even project a copy of the user going through a prerecorded series of actions or steps. For those use it as a holocaster in more civilian applications, it allows speakers/presenters to make their presence significantly increased due to a larger visual representation of the speaker and due to increased volume due to built-in sound speakers.
  • Speakers: Phantasm comes with relatively powerful speakers for its size, allowing it to be used as a public address system in its role as a holocaster or to play music, pre-recorded speeches, or other audio feed for mid-sized events. While the stereo quality isn’t horrible, it is not particularly high-quality either. Phantasm can be linked via its data-socket or internal comlink to other speakers and sound projection devices to improve its sound quality and volume or to create ‘surround sound’. The Phantasm can effectively function as a low-grade holo-sound system.
  • Holo-Recorder: Phantasm contains a built-in holorecorder, which allows it be used as a real-time communication device when connected to a comlink or communication’s array. It can also be used to record the user or nearby events for later viewing.
  • Programmable: Like other holo-projectors, Phantasm can display any a vast array of images, videos, and other visual/audio feed based on data the Phantasm’s positronic brain holds, data from an attached device, or recordings from its built-in holo-recorder. However, unlike many holo-projectors, the user can edit and manipulate these images as well, allowing the Phantasm to create new visual and audio routines. This can be for pure entertainment, such as creating a visual spectacle or light show to accompany a soundtrack, or it can be put to other unusual purposes that are mostly limited by the user’s creativity. A soldier might use it to create moving holo-targets for target practice with his weapon, while a Jedi might similarly use it create the visage of sparring partner who is going through lightsaber or other combat-related drills. A spy or someone seeking to escape from someone might use it to project a doppelganger version of themselves to throw off immediate pursuers or to fool sustained surveillance.
  • Solid State Holo: Phantasm uses solid state holoprojector technology, allowing its projected images to have some a very weak but physical form. This can be particular useful when employing Phantasm as a distraction or as a training tool. A marksman’s projected target will react to being hit while a projected sparring partner can physically be hit by a lightsaber strike or other melee attack. The reverse is also true: a projected holo can thus also touch a person, whether it is as a dance partner or an aggressive sparring partner. The solid form of this light is not very strong, and most attempts to forcefully punch through it will succeed. Likewise, the Phantasm’s projected light is unlikely to seriously damage anything put up against it, being almost equivalent to a thin, hard plastic in physical presence.
  • Network Projector: The Phantasm has a data socket and internal comlink, allowing it to be accept input and output from datapads, computers, droids, other holo-projectors and other electronic devices through physical connections and wireless signals. The Phantasm’s positronic brain allows it coordinate its projections with other display devices, allowing it work in conjunction with other holo-projectors, speakers, and similar devices to create a more immersive and continuous experience that encompass dozens of square meters – a series of Phantasms can thus create visually artificial environments that are useful to relax in (like a vacation at home) or train for combat in a manner similar to a scenic replicator.
STRENGTHS

  • Versatile: Phantasm doesn’t employ any particularly unique technology, but it does combine existing technology in a way not previously seen before, which lends the Phantasm a versatility not found in the typical holo-projectors.
WEAKNESSES

  • Technically Complex: The Phantasm has a lot of features, but it is not particularly user friendly except for the most basic features found in all holo-projectors. It usually requires some time to tinker and learn how to effectively use these features, and even then, executing some of its more complex abilities (such as programming a holographic sparring partner or otherwise altering existing imaging) requires a significant amount of time to accomplish.
DESCRIPTION
As Lucerne Personal Defense sought to expand its product line from personal weapons and armors and into devices commonly used by military and security forces, it became apparent that portable holo-projectors could be lucrative area to expand into simply based on sales volume. Military commanders and soldiers frequently use the devices to communicate between themselves and other governmental offices or to present battle plans and briefings. To that end, the initial Phantasm series Holocaster was simply a ruggerized holo-projector powered by the company’s portable fusion generator and with a slightly expanded projection volume. However, Tresk Ek’alaya, LPD’s CEO was not convinced that the Phantasm would be sufficiently differentiated from other existing holo-projectors to successfully break into the market. Upon his direction, the company’s engineers were told to create the most advanced portable holo-projector which they could conceive, with the result being the Phantasm series Holocaster. Phantasm doesn’t incorporate any unique or new technologies of its own, but rather comprehensively has combined and blended existing holo-technologies to create a particularly versatile holo-projector. Not only can the Phantasm take the role of a traditional institutional holo-projector used for briefings and presentations, but it can also be used for more esoteric applications of holo technology, such as a combat training device, public address system, intelligence countermeasure, or artificial environment creator. Unfortunately, all of these features have increased its complexity, making it not only costly, but difficult to fully use by those who aren’t tech savvy. These issues have caused the Phantasm to be produced only in limited numbers, most of which will be given away in the upcoming Silver Jedi Concord Tech Expo. Smarting from the device’s new market issues, Tresk intends to apply some elements of the Phantasm into a future line of mass produced holo-projectors.
