DESCRIPTION
The Phase I is meant to take that balance between protective, multi-purpose, and inexpensive and blend it seamlessly though with room to improve upon at a later date. Based on the solid foundations of the technological advancements made Galaxy-wide, the Phase I is a product of years of data collected in the many battles that have raged across the galaxy, historic or modern. Mistakes or flaws made in previous armors and corrected to suit the needs of war perfectly.
Like with all armors in the galaxy the Phase I doesn’t make a soldier impervious to damage but it does help. It’s meant to provide the well-trained trooper with both protection and flexibility in combat, whether it's urban assault or storming a fortified position so that they can adapt to the ever-changing situation of a battlefield to the best of their capability.
From the inside out, the wearer of Phase I is first encased in an armorweave bodyglove that serves both as comfortable padding and as a layer of defense in and of itself. This same bodyglove is also insulated and airtight so as to provide the troopers with protection from a variety of environments and even allow for space or vacuum operation for as long as the internal air supply lasts.
The tri-weave Flex-armor consists of an outer and inner layer made from a Quadanium steel-dipped tri-weave fiber mesh. Sandwiched in between is the MR-fluid based liquid armor system. The proprietary ZNI Smart MR-fluid hardens in response to impacts, specifically designed to provide superior shock absorption with the gel dissipating the force behind the strike throughout the gel mesh. The liquid body armor layer is also more flexible than the ceramic or fiber-based alternatives used in some suits, allowing for greater maneuverability and faster starting running. Designed to withstand up to 6gs of acceleration, the suit increases navigational capability by tolerating high acceleration maneuvers without risk of injury, for example with high speed insertions from drop ships or in vacuum combat. The flex-armor vest is mainly meant to provide additional protection to the torso, as that is where most attacks will invariably hit. In the upper body, the flex-armor cuts off at the shoulders and reaches all the way up to the chin forming a turtleneck that reinforces the armor of the neck as well, whereas in the waist area it extends down to mid-thigh, adding protection to the oft-exposed vessels of the femoral region.
Last come the strategically placed duraplast plates, encasing the chest and back, shoulders, upper and lower arms, hands, thighs, calves, and feet. The helmet is also wrought entirely out of duraplast, and is fitted snugly above a neck guard. The Phase I also includes groin guards for all genders, and it should be noted that the chest protection in the variant for breasted individuals does not feature a pronounced a breastplate.
While the standard soldier variant features a small pack against the spine that holds a personal energy shield to provide just a bit more protection but it's only capable of taking on two or three solid hits against the shield makes it fail, at which point a new power cell will need to be inserted which requires help from another to do so. The Officer variant holds a slightly stronger shield capable of taking up to ten solid hits as the extended back plate allows for a better powercell to power it but it still requires the help of another to replace the powercell once it's depleted. The personal energy shield device generates a small almost invisible field only a millimeter above the armor but leaves the hand and soles of feet unprotected to allow for running and to allow for use of the soldiers hands more effectively.
The rest of the armor components all follow on top (such as the utility belt, etc.), and extra ammo compartments, aside from the two on the utility belt, can be located either on the upper arm(s) or on the thigh(s), depending on the wearer’s physique and preferences. The standard-issue combat vibro-knife can be carried in various positions, largely depends on the preference of the soldier though choice is partially limited to the thigh, leg, shoulder, upper arm and utility belt by design.
The pouches and compartments of the Phase I's highly functional utility belt contain a multitude of equipment, including a grappling hook, spare ammunition, ration supplies and a rudimentary medical kit containing enough synthflesh and bacta to keep a wounded soldier alive until a medic can arrive. While neither is part of the official-issue kit, most utility belts also include and carry multitools and a pack of sanitary wipes.
All in all, the Phase I is a well-rounded armor that fares adequately in nearly every combat situation, and while it doesn’t excel in any area, it also doesn’t have any major drawbacks. It's an evolved form of the armors used in the wars of the past, brought to the standards of the modern era of shawken.
