"Plagiarized" Content | Opinions Please

Self-Imposed Exiled
Before I get on with my main point I would like to apologize for the flag that went off when people saw that word in the title, when I said it I mean it in a differing way as you may think or you did think this way, either way lets get on with it.

Basically what I was getting at is using an idea, or even a literal item, from something outside of this realm but say, example... Lets say you wanted to create Vellocet, synthemesc or Drencrom which are drugs from the movie 'A Clockwork Orange' and you would like to have the drugs imitate exactly how it is made, consumed and its affects.

Of course a development thread or two would be made, but is this purely alright? I've seen people use weapons from games, but the weapon is usually the look of it and the same goes with armor. Though, would this be acceptable?

Thanks, I look forward to opinions from the community as well as the respective answers from the staff.

ehhh well I don't know about drugs. Usually there is a star wars version of a drug already. As for other content well usually it is made in a star wars manner and slightly altered enough to fit like it would be in the universe.

Plagiarism - the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.

So long as you cite your sources and don't directly go word for word from the source material without citing, you're good. Just make sure to star warsify it and that should be fine.

I've actually done this using the drug Soma from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. My drug Toma is linked in my signature.

If you make it your own, and as stated previously site your sources, typically the Judges don't take issue. The problem with plagiarism comes into play if you copy/paste other sources word for word and don't cite that it wasn't written by you. There's no issue in using the same ideas, but I would recommend changing the name and writing up how it works in your own words.

Currently I am just the Tel'tak (and a massive mothership) away from having all of the Goa'uld vessels as vessels for my Terminus Imperium Faction.
They use (more or less) the same stats as given on their Stargate Wiki article pages, the only difference being that I edited them to fit properly in the Star Wars Universe; which meant looking at similar already established tech and vessel designs that would allow a comparison to be drawn.
I made it clear that these were a clear nod towards those vessels from Star Gate and that I had nothing to do with their original design or creation. I merely coopted them for my own use.
Just as [member="Popo"] said, I cited where the image / source came from, and beyond using their established length with some minor edits, the vessels themselves are entire unique and meant to work within the Star Wars Universe with already established tech.

As long as your submission is cited, is not a complete copy-paste (and is more or less reworked) and does not break the following rule:
5. All submissions need to conform to the general idea of Star Wars. No Gundam Wings, no Transformers.

You should be okay. It's a case-by-case thing, as it depends on how it has been submitted and such, but in most cases if you make it your own and cite the source you should be okay.

As [member="Mitzi May"] mentioned, the CRC has created a number of drugs that are derived from common media or movies. I.e. Soma, drug from "I come in Peace," etc. We just made it star warsy and cited it where needed.
