Affiliation: The Underground
Population: (Approximate figures) Thousands of support staff; 350 medical staff ( + 120 droids); 7,500 combat personnel and command staff.
Defenses: Ion cannon, laser turrets, mobile artillery, trenches, short and long range sensors, and a strong protective deflector shield for use against orbital bombardment.
30 medium-class transports, 60 mixed star fighters and/or bombers, 20 air speeders and personnel transports.
Points of Interest:
BARRACKS AND LIVING QUARTERS:
The barracks and living quarters are distributed on multiple levels around the base. Some barracks are self-contained units fully enclosed by the surrounding rock. Other quarters use a combination of natural or engineered caverns and enclosed units. Quarters are generally divided into troop barracks, officer quarters, in-transit personnel housing, and VIP quarters. However given the rugged conditions of the base, even the best quarters are still subject to the intense cold of the surrounding arctic conditions. Most quarters consist of little more than a bunk, limited storage space, and the necessities for daily living.
BRIEFING ROOMS:
Underground missions and strategy are discussed and conveyed in briefing rooms around the base. Some are small, with enough space for a dozen people or fewer. At least one is auditorium sized, with fixed seating and a large holodisplay and holoprojector for presenting battle plans, mission parameters, and any other information Underground Rebels of any command level may need to convey to each other.
COMMAND CENTRE:
Point Zero’s main command centre is relatively understated. It is highly utilitarian, with freestanding control panels, electronics, gear and other equipment housed in a central natural cavern. The command centre is the focus of all base operations. Broadcasts and orders to other Underground facilities or units throughout the galaxy are usually handled elsewhere, though they can if the need is necessary be routed through the centre. The command centre monitors the surrounding area and star system, ever watchful for natural threats and enemy probes or scout units. It coordinates starship and vehicle traffic, area patrols and the base’s extensive defensive network.
Defensive Emplacements and Artillery:
The Underground complimented their hidden stronghold by building a sprawling network of trenches, tunnels and outposts into the surface ground on and around the base, reinforced by permanent anti-vehicle and anti-personnel turrets, as well as by portable artillery units. Point Zero’s formidable energy shield is expected to force any attackers to forgo an aerial assault and resort to a ground attack instead. The tunnels and trenches provide a fast and safer path by which to relocate or deploy troops. Great care was taken in the design of any Defensive Emplacements to look like the natural surrounds of the terrain.
Hanger Bay 12:
The smaller of Point Zero’s hanger bays, Hanger Bay 12 contains and guards the north entrance to the base. It typically houses a squadron each of localised air speeders and star fighters, as well as a pen to hold the native beast of burden. It also has room for a small light freighter or similarly sized starship. Surface patrols to the north and surrounding areas are typically dispatched from this hanger bay. The north entrance is protected by a massive blast and shield door to shelter the base from attack and the colder atmosphere of Karideph’s northern pole. To protect sensitive equipment as well as life and limb, standing orders require the door to be closed every night as temperatures drop below critically low.
Main Hanger Bay:
The main hanger was carved from one of the largest naturally formed caverns in the Kari tunnels, enlarged and improved by the best engineers of the Underground. It can hold up to thirty medium transports, which stand ready to evacuate the base at any time. Some transports also ferry supplies and equipment in and out of the base. Other freighters and starships can be docked within this facility, though they are never permanently laid up and instead are treated as temporary guests at best. The hanger also holds bomber and other star fighter squadrons as needed. The hanger has two large doors that comprise the southern access to the base and are large enough for freighters and their star fighter escorts to exit quickly. An exterior staging area which while seldom used allows additional loading space for larger ships and other needs.
Ion Cannon:
Point Zero contains one of the Underground’s most treasured and formidable defences anywhere in the galaxy. A massive Planet Defender Ion Cannon provides enough firepower to temporarily disable a Star Destroyer in orbit with several well placed shots. It can be used to repel attacking craft as well as cover departing starships in an evacuation. The Ion cannon has its own power generator and sits apart from the main base in a hollowed out cavern to the west.
Medical Center:
The Medical Center at Point Zero is the equal to any hospital in the galaxy, with the obvious focus on combat casualties and rehabilitation. It is staffed by hundreds of doctors and medical specialists, all of whom have volunteered their services to the Underground’s rebellion causes. In amongst the staff there is also large amounts of medical droids designated to help in the case of medical emergencies. The medical centre regularly treats base personnel who are injured by accident or by one of the many environmental hazards on Karideph. While originally designed to be the the main relay point for any medical needs to the entire Underground in the sector allowing agents and troops who are usually based elsewhere to be brought in for critical treatment, the plan was eventually scrapped in order to preserve the secrecy of the base’s location meaning all Underground bases were offered smaller, more localised medical needs.
Shield Generator:
The shield provides the base’s primary defense. It is able to repel bombardments from space or aerial attack, even those generated by a fleet of Star Destroyers. Operational parameters require that the generator sit on the surface, rather than the original wish for it to be hidden within a protective cavern. As such, Underground defences are designed to protect it so that the shield may remain in operation long enough to complete an emergency evacuation. Starships cannot fly through the shield, so it must be lowered for any incoming or departing traffic, even in combat situations.
Starfighter Maintenance Level:
A large maintenance hanger sits below Hanger Bay 12. It has no direct access to the outside, so a massive lift provides transports between levels. Starships and vehicles in need of extended repairs or advanced modifications are brought below, where a lengthy stay does not inhibit day-to-day hanger operations. General maintenance is typically handled in the main hangers. The Underground are adept at patching starships and equipment from materials at hand. While they do have spare parts, they rarely have the newest and best options available.
Nerf Pen:
With the Undergrounds need for secrecy they called in on a large heard of Nerfs in order to rely on their hardy nature for transport and cargo haulage outside of the base to local areas. The nerd's stealth is beneficial, as patrols using creatures are less obvious to observers than a fast and high-flying speeder or low flying starship. The Underground stable, feed and care for these creatures in pens within the base, near the hangers. Most are reserved for their rotation on daily patrols and cargo hauls, but special transportation requests are often accommodated.
Description:
With the recent events on Demonsgate and the subsequent militarisation of the Underground within the Kathol Rift, the resistance group were forced to seek out more localised locations within the Sector to base their new headquarters.
While Rebellion Actual was an initially suited place of operations it was found to be lacking the mainstay support necessary for the faction wide logistical challenges now faced by the Underground’s movements.
Though within the sector their were numerable planets and stations available, the activity the main Underground base would attract would make it difficult to hide completely making isolation and deceit the key.
Finding a location that was regularly ignored and omitted from local maps and charts, uninhabited and sparse yet still relatively accessible took time, especially once the fear of enemy patrols and probes came into play.
Eventually, after several scouting missions the Underground settled for carving their new base out of the already existent and abandoned tunnels of the native Kari on the gateway to the Rift, Karideph.
Point Zero is among the largest Rebel bases in the galaxy. Built within the old abandoned Kari tunnel network on the uninhabited northern pole of Karideph. It features multiple levels with many chambers connected by tunnels and turbo lifts. The tunnels in which it is hidden conceals massive hanger bays, sprawling corridors, natural caverns, a complete medical facility, and Underground command operations. Few Underground bases boast as modern and complete facilities as Point Zero.
Within Point Zero itself most of the personnel are focused on completing construction itself , aside from those who are engaged dispatching operations elsewhere in the galaxy. Karideph’s near remote location benefits the Underground by keeping operations out of sight, but it also contributes to the isolation many rebels already feel. With a strict ban policy on the base for recreational visits to nearby settlements, personnel are often left to their own divides and sources of entertainment.
