Posting & You

Every Role-Player has different methods and preferences when it comes to how they post and like others to post with them. Some would rather have quick replies over longer posts, while others prefer longer more detailed posting over a fast Role-Play.

I myself like a mixture of the two. I normally go for about three paragraphs per post to give just enough insight on a scene whilst not making my partner/s wait for hours as I write. That's just my preference again, and I never expect anyone to type as much as I do if they do not wish it.

So what is your prerogative? Are you one of those people that like quick and witty posts to move the story along as fast as possible, or do you take time and patience to type a short story with each posting?

Depends. if your posting with someone you know or they're fine with it and especially if its for instance a fast paced duel, then shorter posts are acceptable in my opinion. Personally, my posting type depends on the character. Frisby's style's shorter to reflect his personality. Hulle's posts however will be as long-winded as his sermons.

All in all, it if the situation calls for it, either can deviate. But I try to be consistent to an extent

[member="Mangus Abraxius"] I tend to adapt to those I'm posting with.

As a writer I can do short and quick but addition of detail and character thought I think gives those you're writing with things to work with when they are adding to the story

I am a mix as well, sometimes it is fun to make a long and detailed post... other times well I don't need to say a lot. Two threads I am in right now both have the same purpose. Training, one the padawan is giving my master quick 1-2 sentence posts to which try to make something to have a story and some fun. The other same thing training and the padawan is giving me longer thought out and semi detailed she isn't going to the patterns on her robes or how they itch ect ect. So I can relax and think of some things there. The one thread I am in with [member="Sitara Qin"] and we are training and dev threading. A mixture of quick posts between us to move some things along and long posts detailing a lot of information.

I'm a fast poster and tend to post daily. I like to sit down just jam out. Bam, bam, bam. One post after another. I listen to music and read pc magazines online while I post too. For muses sake.

I tend not care about formatting or skill beyond raw communication. If I can read your post and know what you're doing? That's par for me. Good job. I still get impressed by excellent writing, choreography, and visualization, but that's just a bonus for me. I don't expect that from most hobbyists.

I used to play DnD 3.5e in college around a table with a group of guys and gals. PbP really helps me recreate that feeling again. Dungeon delving and ridiculous party banter. Min-maxing ability scores and bickering over magical loot. Killing hobgoblin kings and watching the DM squirm over our bad conversation choices. Those are my favorite types of RP. The ones with action, adventure, and a healthy amount of facepalming. :D

Now I suddenly have the urge to go tomb raiding with [member="Jay Scott Clark"] and run into HKs space dwarfs

and no I think we all have that RP playlist of music mine is a whole lot of K and J pop tp pump me up to posting.

Welcome to the majority. :p

Arr. We'd go raiding the Forgotten Realms for HK dwarf women only to discover there aren't any droids. :D

One of the only things that I cant stand and refuse to do to others when it comes to posting is only doing so once a day. On average it probably takes me 25-30 minutes to pound out three paragraphs, and I'm not a good typer. I'm the guy that looks at his keyboard and not the screen and ends up having to retype have of what he wrote before posting, so it really gets me when someone you thread with someone and they only respond once every 24 hours.

I give a pass to people in different time zones, as well as those that type up books with every post, but if your typing the same amount as me or less than you should be able to post more than once a day. If not at least tell the person you are RPing with why so they have some insight on the reason why you do not.

To avoid this I normally work out a posting schedule with those I type with like I did Sempra the Hutt.

What are your thoughts and posting times?

I used to think the same. Especially if you've come from a Skype RP or other such really fast community. Then I met a bunch of Military Guys and they were the best. They could only post like one a month for two days? But it was epic, epic. These guys loved explosions and roleplaying wonky HK droids. So I've chilled out since then. As long as somebody says, "Hey man. I only post on Fridays or such...", then I'm cool with it. I have no problem planning ahead and making time for someone I enjoy hanging with.

IMO PbP was created to accommodate impossible schedules. Just like email RP. You just post when you can. No biggie. :D

Darn, and here I thought I was in some elite class of roleplayers :p

Whew, I've gotten so behind in my posts on some sites that I was kicked off. All in all, I try to write whenever I'm able, but I'm sure as heck not posting if the most I can muster is "I walk towards the person. I turn my head and sigh."

Altogether, it helps if you don't fly blind into an RP. While it can be fun, if you don't know what you're doing there's going to be a lot of silence on your end. Act like you would in real life, don't go into an enemy bunker with no plan.

I spent about 5 years RPing on Star Wars Legacies, which was oddly a lot like this site albeit with not as many members. It was PbP but the premise of the site focused on storytelling more than just RPing. The community was really close-knit and the way we worked things out was to get in touch with each other and pick out a day just to RP. We may have gone a week or more without RP, but on those days we would easily get 30 or more posts deep.

That's how I really like things. Karlant, a friend from the site and the one who played Master Rorris from this character's history was in the navy and he couldn't post a lot since they had no internet service, but on days he did we would thread until we dang near couldn't type anymore.

[member="Mangus Abraxius"] eh I don't know about that to a point... I will admit when I am on and see someone I am rping with on and they respond to ten threads and not mine... I don't always like it but I usually try to understand what they are doing. THey might have work, they might have school, be in the military or some program. Maybe they are moving and of course the time zones. So long as there is something said like "hey I am doing this" I can wait awhile. One rp I have been in the other writer got married and has her kids. so 75 posts over four months ranging from some a paragraph to at one point 4k posts. And I was on legacies when it started for several years those members could be so many words and they taught so many bad habits at times

and [member="Jay Scott Clark"] that sound slike it could be epic... now to just get the jedi peacock and the lollipop head to join together for some raids... We'll find the dwarf women and use space elves to do it.

Now you're speaking my language! :D

[member="Mangus Abraxius"]

I keep some images in my Photobucket to remind me of how diverse the RP Universe really can be. Here's a few,

Helps me keep it all in perspective. :p

I generally like to do 2 to 3 paragraph long posts on a normal basis, but 4 or 5 paragraphs aren't uncommon. The quality of my posts aren't usually too great sadly, even though I try to get them good, but they just end up being the same old "Adenn Gra'tua walked onto the scene, scanning the area for anything PC related or just kinda cliché. generally the bounty hunter also started spinning his dual pistols after taking these steps."

Sometimes I get a really good post though, and it reads very well, not all the time though :/.

My posting generally takes a bit. Standard procedure is as follows:

  • Open thread and go to relevant posts
  • Make separate tabs for each relevant post back to my last post (and further back as necessary)
  • Read each post
  • While reading, think of ideas while in the midst of reading.
  • Once finished reading, think of how the ideas would work in the thread.
  • Fact check in the thread, on Wookieepedia, and source books as necessary.
  • Tweak ideas to make them work.
  • Finally, get to writing
The actual writing part is then very quick. Compared to normal writing practices on this board, it's like I'm Ernest Hemingway. I avoid superfluous and poetic language. I try to merely describe the action and avoid stating what my character thinks or what other characters can't see/know. What information I provide beyond the action is what I think other writers may need to know in order to write responsibly or in a manner I would like.

Of course, I sometimes place a lot of focus on the action - being very specific. This is mostly because I like to try to get nuances across, and a lot of times the tiny details can make a big difference several posts down the line.

It's roleplaying, so in the end, what my character thinks and believes as well as what I believe as a Writer shouldn't really be the forefront of my post. It's all about the character's interaction with other characters and the world.

When things don't need a lot of thought, I can knock out posts in under 5 minutes. But when I have plans within tricks within plans within other people's tricks within plans, I might take longer.

Seeing as how I run multiple characters at once (and have a ton of other things to do with my day than simply post here, I mean come on, those video games aren't going to play themselves :p ) I often only post once a day per character, sometimes less if I'm waiting on other folks. But aside from my schedule, my background seems to be quite different than most of the folks here on Chaos.

I am a plot heavy guy. I like coming up with ideas, figuring out how to get from point A to point Z squared. Sometimes that takes considerable effort, sometimes it's a breeze. I'm rarely one to simply plop a character into a scenario and have them play it out for guano and guffaws (my best attempt to keep that phrase pg13). So it can take me longer simply because I'm trying to plan things out, have a decent idea of direction, development, and character.

As I think about the initial question here, I recognize as well that the amount of detail that I put into things is not standard. A typical post for me takes about an hour, and often times more. At the same time, I've seen a lot of talented posters be able to accomplish what I do and then some with a much lower word count. So in the end, I guess personal style has a lot to do with it. And I totally agree that sometimes the character itself dictates that style.

I tend to aim for at least two decent sized paragraphs per post as a minimum, but often overshoot this. This way I can pretty much guarantee myself that I'll be able to post a quick reply, but that it'll also have a fair bit of description in it to help set the scene. That said I've been known to do upwards of two thousand words as a reply once I get going, haha. Definitely enjoy posts that read more like a story too.
