Hangar Post Deployment: Four Hangars, one squadron per hangar.

Special Features: The Dista's Landfall class features incredibly heavy armor and shielding before it is deployed on a planet, however, as a result of this prior to its deployment the ship cannot make use of any of its armament. Ergo, in space it is primarily a wrecking ball. On land, however, the armor paneling slides away, and down from the ship, thus turning it into an instant base of operations on a planet.

Strengths:

+ Instant Hello: When the ship makes landfall, it deploys into a base of operations.

+Nasty Surprise: When the ship makes landfall, its occupants can potentially completely deploy within two hours.

+Goliath: This ship is so big that small arms fire is entirely ineffective.

+Wrecking Ball: Despite its slow speed, this ship is so big and heavy that it is effectively a space-steamroller.


Weaknesses:

-Wrecking Ball: This ship is utterly useless in space outside of very slowly bumping into things.

-One Trick Pony: If anyone manages to find a way to stop this ship making landfall, it becomes nothing more than a floating military base.

-Owchies: Due to the fact that this ship has to essentially crashland onto a planet in a warzone, there's a high potential for casualties before the occupants have even deployed should the pilots find themselves unable to land the ship properly.

-2 Fat 2 Furious: While the ship is invariably a furious machine of war, it is so slow that it takes on average five hours for the ship to get from its hyperspace exit point to touchdown on a planet. Depending on the circumstances surrounding its landing, it could take anywhere from an hour to six hours for the ship to become fully operational upon landing.



Description: Originally thought as an insane and wasteful design, the ever desperate Republic have finally given in and commissioned a semi-unique ship like no other. It's creation was championed by Jedi Master Carn Dista, thus the ship is known as the Dista's Landfall class, this goliath isn't designed for Space combat whatsoever. On the contrary, this ship is designed soley for planetary invasions. While in space, the Dista's Landfall class is about as useless as a chocolate teapot, unless one considers it for ramming tactics while on route to the planets surface. However, this changes the moment the ship hits land - The ship deploys immediately, with the heavy armor sliding down to reveal several hangars, an entrance, and a vicious array of turbolasers and other anti-air batteries. This creates a huge base of operations for the Republic on the world of choice, giving the beleaguered underdogs a holding on a planet to viciously defend. And with a full compliment of three infantry divisions, a mechanized division, and four hangars hosting one squadron of fighters a piece, it's one hell of a holding point. Unfortunately however, due to the ships size, it is both monumentally slow and impossible to retrieve from a planet once it has been deployed. This means that should the Republic ever choose to deploy one of these monumental ships, they will be fully committing to taking and holding that world. Should they fail to do so, the Dista's Landfall can be self destroyed by way of overloading the core and annihilating the ship from within. Naturally, this can only be actioned by the officer in command of the Landfall, and must be approved by Naval Command as a last resort. The officer and any surviving troops within the Landfall are fully expected to remain aboard the ship, in defensive positions around the reactor until the bitter end in this scenario, to ensure that the Landfall's schematics never fall into enemy hands. Also, due to the size of the ship itself, the Republic Navy will only ever have one of them in existence at a time.

Intent: To give the Republic a one-time-only use ship for invasions where the Republic is the attacker, thus making it more difficult for the defending faction to dislodge them from a world.

Who Can Use This: Republic FA approved PC's only.

So yeah, I've been kicking about this idea for a few days, and I've finally come to the conclusion that it's interesting enough to present to you guys. Firstly, I'd like your thoughts on it, and secondly if anyone thinks this is actually worth making for the republic, post up in here, and when we match the conditions for the factory sub I'll start the thread up.

OK, in no particular order, I don't see this being viable and worth trying to summon 400 posts for, and this is why:

  • Name - It's not very catchy, and even a little odd that a Jedi would use it for himself.
  • Size - This thing is huge - but it won't be able to land or take off easily. The nature of gravity means that nothing larger than a Venator was ever able to land, even if it did come into the atmosphere of a planet. The simply massive weight of this means it'd have to be using some sort of repulsor engine which would obliterate anything beneath it.
  • Speed - There's no reason for the ship to be so slow. A 10x hyperdrive is beyond slow, taking 10 times longer than a star destroyer to get anywhere. Interestingly your speed in space is probably too low and doesn't gel with the rest of that concept.
  • Armament - Having no weapons in space is bad...really, really bad. Without even a single quad laser this thing will be the biggest, fattest target around. Can you say turkey shoot? A single bomber squadron could pick this apart and because it's so slow it won't be able to escape. Even with escorts it'll be murdered.
  • Hanger - Once deployed it can only hold 4 squadrons? A heavy cruiser of 800m can do that!
  • Passengers - From too little to too much. 4 divisions of troops is a lot of troops, and if we include their full equipment it seems like they'll be smushed together. If the ship is shot down that's a pretty big loss in troops as well as material in the ship.
  • Self-Destruct - Given that this ship is the size of the City of London (the old city area) any overload would utterly exterminate everything for miles around. This is not a transport, it's a superweapon.
  • One Use - Given that it can only be used once it feels like a massive waste of resources. It'd be like if the USA went through all that work to make one atom bomb and then could never make any others again.

And finally we get to the big reason, the one for which this ship should be binned for.

  • WHY? I'm asking this honestly to you as someone who knows how SWRP works. From an OOC angle this is a terrible, terrible idea. Invasions on this site are settled mostly by PVP, partly by fleeting and very, very occasionally through NPC armies. With this in mind this is useless. In a fleeting battle any competent Admiral could smash this. The Immortal at least has weapons (even if they're poorly mounted), this has nothing. Two Star Destroyers and a couple of assault frigates could junk this.
  • Assuming it reaches the ground (and the admins of both sides allow it) most fighting is by PVP. On the off chance you can even use the troops contained within, this ship is a big immobile target. Artillery, bombers, boarders, all of them would take this apart much easier than you expect. And even if they don't, what's it matter? You've landed 4 divisions on one small part of a planet. The Sith retreat behind a hill and this ship is useless...or you 'land' this in a city and destroy it.

I do think this would work at 1/4 size. A heavy transport with massive armour able to carry a division of troops. That's a great idea, and best of all doesn't need a dev thread if it's under 1000m. Do that, and on the rare off chance you get to play with armies in an invasion you'll have your landing ship.

As it is...no. No, this is a terrible idea, at best a diversion from useful threads, and at worst a disaster waiting to happen. I say this not to be mean, but to try and help you understand from someone who knows how this site works.

The Bulwark MK III While being varied in its size history from 4.5 to 2.5 km was able to make planetfall. but yes anything under it dies lol It a galactic can smasher... Bu there is precedent for something larger than a Venator. ;)

My 2 cents, Bad concept, Make the flagship A beast and have it give cover fire for smaller landing ships. IF you just want it to land to deploy troops there is no reason to not give it weapons. ITS BIG! it has room.

Things it needs to land ARMOR! SHIELDING! SPEED! you would have to break through a blockade most likely and lugging through it slowly just puts more fire on it. Assault ships generally have reinforced structures, Heavy Armor plating like super heavy, Heavy Shielding, and way big engines to push it all faster than what a normal ship of the line would go.

Yes this limits things like attack craft and weapons but that's the rub. And generally what weapons it has would be geared towards Assault. It would have heavy turbolasers, Proton Torpedos, Hypervelocity cannons to pound the landing zone before it lands. It could even have bomb chutes. Then it would have a few defensive guns for anti fighter/ anti personnel once it lands. Weapons like Ion Cannons and Concussion missiles are geared more for ship to ship combat and while they could be useful, having the other weapons makes more sense for an assault ship.

Also about the hanger issue, GUNSHIPS! If this thing is going to bust through an enemy line and make planetfall it would need ships more suited to provide anti personnel cover fire. Sure fighters and bombers can help but a ship like this will have other ships to provide that.

I mean that's not too hard. For one if it was a legit flagship it'd be unique so we could have the same firepower, but fix the pesky firing arcs and slow ass speed they tacked on theirs.
