STRENGTHS
- Combustion Shielding: Modern First Order combustion shielding is considerably refined since it's use centuries ago. The shields are able to absorb and disperse a limited amount of energy as waste heat while active, essentially allowing them to shrug off small amounts of damage with little or no impact. Against any sort of concentrated barrage this effect is barely noticeable, though. In other words it's fairly innocuous in a proper fleet engagement but when dealing with small numbers of inferior opponents it can seem like the vessel isn't taking any damage at all.
- Bastion Cruiser: The Makhaira integrates an extensive battery of defensive weapons with the combat-proven Bastion Combat System. It can provide as much screen coverage as several smaller ships, laying down a net of laser and missile fire that is lethal to inbound strike craft and ordnance.
- Interdiction on a budget: The Makhaira features four small directional Interdiction. While they lack the area of effect to pull an entire fleet out of hyperspace they are more than capable of disrupting formations, and add tactical utility and some strategic versatility.
WEAKNESSES
- Mediocre Combatant: With both 'Average' armament and low defense, the Makhaira does not really excel as a front-line combatant. Its strength is in its speed and special operations.
- Combustion: The Combustion Shield Arrays can be overloaded if they are engaged for an extended period of time, destroying the array and effectively dropping the Makhaira's defense rating to 'low.'
DESCRIPTION
The evolution of an earlier design, the Makhaira takes its name and general appearance from a legacy vessel, but incorporates the state of the art First Order technology of the Falchion Cruiser. Designed as both a hi-speed pursuit vessel, and a squadron command ship, the Makhaira proved expensive to produce in quantity, but excels at both roles. The addition of the much refined Combustion Shielding, and inclusion of the Bastion Combat System (like its forebearer) mean the ship is very good acting as a flagship for a unit of frigates and corvettes, able to coordinate defense of the force via IFC-DCN and direct fighter operations and frigate assaults.
Cost aside, there are other limitations obvious on the ship. It is not very impressively armed, outgunned in a straight fight by the far more numerous 'Planet-class' Heavy Frigate, though it is not undergunned by any means either. The armor and shielding are likewise serviceable but unimpressive. But the ship is quite fast and maneuverable for its size, and it brings to a fight a great deal of utility (not to mention half a wing of strike craft).
