SPECIAL FEATURES
Strengths:
- The Anvil: The Anti-Concussion Field, combined with Amplified Combustion Shielding, topped off by the Bastion System, gives the Supremacy incredible protection, but only for fairly short periods of time, and at a cost of losing basically all firepower and maneuverability. Even without that active, this is a very tough ship.
- Versatility: With good firepower, great defenses, and a respectable hanger, the Supremacy-class can perform well in most missions, from acting as a fleet flagship to operating in a line of battle or in deep patrol.
- All-Range Firepower: A good mix of long-range and standard range weapons allows the Supremacy to perform at any range.
- Knife Tang: Something of a departure from the traditional dagger design, the Supremacy-class has more weapons able to target the ventral and aft sections of the vessel, but has to pivot significantly more than normal to bring all weapons to bear forward, thus presenting a larger target. Essentially, it still is largely a ship designed to face the enemy head on.
- Brightest Lights: When amplified, the Combustion Shielding is extremely effective at shedding incoming energy as waste heat. This gives the Supremacy a uniquely prominent sensor profile, making it trivial to target (while the system is active) even in degraded conditions.
- Combustables: The Combustion Shielding is capable of being overloaded. In normal modes this is fairly manageable, but during Amplified settings concentrated firepower could totally overcharge the capacitors, dealing crippling damage to the internals of the vessel and stripping it of shields entirely.
DESCRIPTION
Developed in secret as 'Project 54851,' The Supremacy-class represents a departure from many earlier First Order designs, and is perhaps more akin to the Pellaeon-class of the Fel Empire than the ancient Imperial-class. Largely a product of lessons learned during the war with the Galactic Alliance, the Supremacy-class is versatile, capable, but expensive vessel, not able to be produced in mass numbers, but not so rare as to be only a command ship. It embodies the changing philosophy of the First Order Navy as it steps away from the brute force and displays of might of the old Imperial tradition, and begins to reorganize into an elite strike force built around specialist vessels. Yet in seeming defiance of that change, the Supremacy-class is not a specialist vessel, instead built as a line destroyer.
It is the anvil of the First Order, upon which the enemy will break uselessly, ready to smashed to bits by the force of the hammer.
The design features several concessions to the physical realities of shipbuilding. The massive power requirements to run a star destroyer necessitate a ventral bulge for the reactor (a fairly common feature on Imperial-style ships) and the vessel also peaks in the middle, a concession made to centralize command and control facilities while allowing for greater structural integrity in the 'wings' of the dagger shape.
The Supremacy class is incredibly durable for its size, with a reinforced hull, heavy armoring, and redundant shielding. In a now typical departure from old Imperial designs the shielding is distributed across no fewer than six projectors and four amplifiers. These are focused on the center 'cityscape' but give good protection all around the vessel. Armor is of a type used on many previous First Order vessels, and has proven incredibly effective against both kinetic and energy weaponry. The Bastion Combat System rounds out the defenses, adding its combat-proven effectiveness to the package.
The Ray Shielding is of a new variant, titled Combustion Shielding, which has been refined since it's use centuries ago. The shields are able to absorb and disperse a limited amount of energy as waste heat while active, essentially allowing them to shrug off small amounts of damage with little or no impact. Against any sort of concentrated barrage this effect is barely noticeable, though. In other words it's fairly innocuous in a proper fleet engagement but when dealing with small numbers of inferior opponents it can seem like the vessel isn't taking any damage at all.
The Combustion Shielding can be amplified by rerouting excess power to it, allowing incoming fire to bleed off at a rapid rate. However this technique is extremely inefficient, and renders either propulsion or weapons basically useless. Additionally it has a increasing chance of causing the system to fail catastrophically, unless managed by highly skilled operators.
The capstone of all this armor and shielding is a network of miniaturized anticoncussion field generators. A fairly recent technological innovation, the generators are placed across the hull and normally are dormant. When activated, their power draw is so massive it noticeably impacts weapon recharge rates, but gives the ship incredible resilience for the duration. Even with the oversized Primary Hypermatter Reactor the Supremacy-class can only run the generators for brief periods of time, and skilled commanders tend to use it to absorb waves of fire.
The effects of the anticoncussion field and amplified combustion shielding can be paired, giving the ship absolutely incredible energy and kinetic resilience but dramatically reducing both it's offensive and maneuvering ability. First Order Tactical Memo's term this the 'Full Barrier Defense.' While certainly impressive, it is of limited tactical usefulness, once could achieve the same effect with a dedicated shield ship for a fraction of the cost. The FBD can also only be maintained for a short period of time, or the ship risks overloading it's shields entirely.
While the resilience of the ship is perhaps its key feature, the offensive loadout is both varied and frighteningly effective. Unlike some other designs, the Supremacy-class focuses on an all-range capability with a pair of spinal-mounted Mk 74 guns, a battery of Heavy Energy Torpedo Projectors, along with a number of specialized long-range turrets all alongside powerful First Order turbolasers. The main guns of the ship are ten batteries of three turrets, each a quad-barrel Annihilator Turbolaser turret. These batteries are fire-linked, capable of directing a withering barrage of energy onto any target.
Defensive weapons are all tied in to the Bastion Combat System and feature primarily Quad Laser CIWS (with a higher rate of fire but lower power-per-shot than traditional quad lasers), conventional warhead launchers (able to be utilized offensively or defensively as necessary) and a number of the tried-and-true Mk 26 HARM GMWS.
The navigation package on the vessel is also fairly advanced, taking a page form the design book used to craft the Unforgiven. A Predator Interdiction Drive and HIMS are supported, giving the vessel a good capability to utilize microwarp jumps and offering some utility in deal with enemy forces attempting such a tactic.
Other systems onboard the destroyer are fairly standard, including a robust ECM and EW Suite, a standard Ionic Shielding Package, and a number of advanced Command and Control systems. The Supremacy-class is fully capable of acting as the flagship of a fleet, and is often chosen to do so. It is also fairly heavily automated, and features a much smaller crew than traditional designs. It is not so undermanned as to be particularly vulnerable, though. Furthermore it carries a hefty complement of troops (though not a full Legion) and supports enough landers and drop pods to engage in boarding and landing operations.
Despite the various improvements and advances of the ship it is not considered a replacement vessel for the IDX as the standard Star Destroyer of the First Order Navy. This is not due to any lack of capability, but simply the cost of producing these vessels, which is quite high. Nevertheless the ship is sure to become a tangible reminder of the power and authority of the First Order.
