DESCRIPTION |
The staple bread and butter of the Confederacy of Independent Systems - and the more notable and well-known of the vessels often deployed in its fleets. Over the countless eras that have come and gone since its original deployment by the Trade Federation prior to the Clone Wars and those during, the Lucrehulk-class has become synonymous with the might and strength of the Confederacy and a common sight throughout the territory administered by that Galactic Government. It has undergone a number of refits, redesigns, and alterations - and following in that same train of thought, the Lucrehulk-class Battleship has been reintroduced with a striking design - though is none the less, still just as capable as its predecessors. A stark difference between the Lucrehulk-class a number of its predecessors is the addition of hangar bays located on the exterior section of its ring-ling superstructure. With five such hangar bays on each arm - and still retaining its usual docking claws and hangar bays on the internal section of its arms - these exterior hangar bays are equipped with a sophisticated Catapult Launch System; in which the Starfighters are loaded into a magazine like system and rapidly deployed into combat. However, the downside to this system is the time it takes to load those Starfighters that have returned to refit and rearm - likewise, the system if damaged, would be rendered inoperable and become prevented from rapidly launching any starfighters loaded into its waiting magazine. That is not to say that the Lucrehulk-class would become defenseless or inoperable, as it still remains an effective Battleship even in the event that it cannot rapidly deploy its Starfighter Squadrons. Following in the steps of its predecessors, the Lucrehulk-class is just as heavily armed as the mainline battleships deployed during the Clone Wars and in the following conflicts that have spread across the galaxy. Its defensive capabilities are just as formidable - and the Lucrehulk-class retains its capability of deploying massive forces of battle droids and ground elements to a planet. However, these capabilities come at a cost - and in this instance, that cost comes in the form of a marked lack of speed and maneuverability. Likewise, as a means to further increase its cargo capacity and passenger complement, many systems of the vessel are highly automated to cut down on the size and space that would be taken up by a more conventional crew for a vessel of this size. This holds the potential of its own problems, with such systems - in the event of damage or disability by Ion-based weaponry - placing an additional burden to maintain the vessel's operational capacity, on the already small crew. Furthermore, while the vessel is more than capable of operating within the atmosphere of a planet - and retains a Command and Control capability - these systems can just as easily be turned against the craft. Such as by the disabling or destruction of those systems that would keep the vessel aloft in the Atmosphere - resulting in the Lucrehulk-class crashing into the planet below. Or a skilled Slicer being able to disseminate harmful coding or viruses through the Command and Control system to nearby Droid units. Thus, it is critical that these systems are highly protected and are some of the most heavily defended areas on or within the vessel itself. Even with the vessel being classified as a Battleship, and carrying the armament to back up such a claim - it still relies heavily upon additional support vessels to withstand long-term fleet engagements - as even the Lucrehulk-class would be incapable of withstanding a concentrated salvo from a fleet of Star Destroyers. As the years continue to push forward, and new innovations are made, it is only a matter of time before the next vessel comes along - for the moment, the Lucrehulk-class is not intended to displace or otherwise fully replace those design iterations that have come before this current design. Rather, much like many of the other recent designs produced and associated with Von Sorenn Industries - they are intended to operate alongside and in tandem with these older designs, complementing their strengths and weaknesses and providing for a greater effective fighting force than supplanting them wholesale. |
