DESCRIPTION |
The first Lupus-class Missile Frigates that were produced were utilized by the Trade Federation prior to the Clone Wars, and were known more from the accounts of Nym and his Pirates that had faced these vessels prior to their inclusion within the overall Confederacy Navy. What information and little is known of those previous iterations reported a smaller vessel, with claw like protrusions that were armed with minimal weapon systems though still packed a punch when utilized. This variant of the Lupus-class is a direct successor, and was designed to accompany and compliment the older variants that may still be in operation in the Galaxy. Compared to its predecessor, the Lupus-class maintains a heavier array of weapon systems, ranging from Proton Torpedoes to General Purpose Launch tubes capable of deploying nearly any kind of ordnance payload that is provided to the vessel. However, the focus of the Lupus-class on serving in the role of a Missile Frigate has its own downside, mainly in the large arsenal of heavy ordnance that the vessel often carries. Despite the vessel coming equipped with Escape Pods, in the event that its large payload of ordnance was somehow detonated in the heat of battle via a lucky or targeted blast, the vessel itself would be rendered nothing more than scrap metal in the ensuing, violent explosion. Of course this also provides a second drawback in the simple fact that once the Lupus-class has expended its limited ordnance, it must retreat to an appropriate depot for resupply; and in the event that this cannot be accomplished, it is forced to rely on its small complement of Agrocite cannons to have any form of offensive capabilities. Though not as heavily defended as other frigates, the Lupus-class was designed to take advantage of this lack of heavier defenses, which can be seen in the vessels higher speed and maneuverability. This variables are often utilized in place of heavy defenses to keep the vessel out of trouble, or to act in a role as a Fast-Attack craft, swooping in for a targeted strike before retreating to the rear or far ends of a fleet. In order to ensure that the ordnance deployed by the Lupus-class remained on target and was not wasted, the vessel is equipped with a T-80 Droid Targeter. This component assists in increasing the accuracy of long-range strikes utilizing various sensors and miniature gyromotors - this allows the gunners to ensure that their strikes are closer to their intended target than if they were operating without the system. Additional problems can be seen throughout the Lupus-class, such as its use of automated systems - which were installed with the intention of ensuring as few lives as possible were lost in the event that the vessel was destroyed. This however is its own drawback; as if those automated systems were disabled or destroyed via Ion-based weaponry, the nearly skeletal crew would have additional burdens placed upon them to maintain the vessel's operational capabilities. Likewise, it is still capable of being overwhelmed via Starfighter swarms - often being forced to rely on support corvettes or Starfighter Squadrons provided by dedicated carriers as an added layer of defense to compensate for its lessened defensive capabilities. However, in the hands of a skilled crew and a dedicated captain, the Lupus-class is more than capable of providing deep artillery strikes or precision strikes against enemy vessels; utilizing its speed and maneuverability to close the distance and score heavy hits before slipping away to line up for another run. The Lupus-class is more than capable of providing heavier firepower in a smaller package to those fleets that require, and as always, while the most recent iteration in a continuation of that line, it is meant to be deployed alongside older Lupus-class vessels to complement their strengths and their weaknesses; with a mixed fleet of the two being more than capable of wreaking havoc among an enemy fleet. |
