DESCRIPTION |
The first line of Phlegethon Devices were developed and deployed at a time when the Mandalorian Clans had laid siege to the planet of Eshan - during that conflict, the first devices were deployed in mass; resulting in the Eshan Accords which limited their further mass deployment. Though they would eventually undergo a series of changes which included target locking the weapon to prevent its use against a planet, and preventing deployment of more than one device in set intervals - that time and the circumstances have changed. The second generation devices are under no such limitations - originally intended to be developed and deployed against the Bryn'adul, their use and target has, likewise, changed. Each Phlegethon II device is equipped with a rudimentary droid brain which is pre-programmed to deal with a set of potential variables and obstacles to ensure the efficient deployment of the device. Unlike its predecessor, the second generation devices were developed with a multistage deployment capability; which allows for the device to be deployed directly from a Capital Ship, or deployed from a planetary location. The drawback of this multistage design comes in the form of potential failure of the stages to deploy properly, or even to be sabotaged, which would prevent properly deployment in its entirety. The second generation devices were also designed to be able to utilize non-fissile materials - such as depleted uranium - as the fuel source for ignition; however, this greatly reduces its overall effectiveness when compared to utilizing the fissile materials that are often deployed within the device. Likewise, the dangers and potential hazards of both transporting and handling these devices remains - such as they had been present in the predecessor devices. This can range from acute radiation poisoning, in the event that an individual is exposed to the fissile material through improper handling; to even the potential detonation of the device due to the volatile fuel - Rhydonium - that is utilized as a propellant in the multistage design. With conflicts continuing to change and evolve throughout the Galaxy, the need for such weapons was revisited. Though, in many cases, it is rare that these devices would be deployed - their destructive capability is a boon to any arsenal. Their design, however, is limited in a major regard - that being the lack of a Baradium component. Without that component, these weapons, in and of themselves, are still highly destructive, though are otherwise incapable of cracking a planet like a Baradium Fission Device. It should also be noted that any attempt to tamper with, or otherwise refit these devices in such a manner would fail, either resulting in radiation exposure to those attempting to modifying the device, or activating a self-destruct component that would detonate the device. The Self Destruct Device does not trigger when in the presence of Baradium - rather - it works by detecting the addition of Baradium to the device, and then activates in the event that the Baradium modified device is attempted to be deployed. |
