A P E X
I prefece this by asking for recommendations for PS4 games. Please share them below!
Okay.
As many of you may know, I was a member of the Xbox One camp for a few years now. Not by preference, mind. When the PS4 and Xbox One released, there wasn't any of the former in stock within fifty miles of my residence. And, being the "genius" that I am, I decided to go with Xbox instead of waiting a few weeks because "at least it has Halo." If only I knew what I knew now about what 343 did to that franchise.
Anyway.
What I enjoyed the most about my time using the Xbox One was the Kinect. Not the movement/gestures bit, of course, but being able to get things done without lifting a finger was awesome. At one point, I had the TV, surround sound, cable, and Xbox all synced to awaken with a single "Xbox On." As such, I didn't use an actual TV remote for a couple years. A close second was Games with Gold. Every now and again, a decent game would come through and I'd have a ball for free.
What I didn't enjoy about Xbox was, first off, the dashboard. The newest version is literally the most convoluted mess I've ever seen. Next, I wasn't a fan of the lineup. "Exclusives" this year at E3 was a joke - we all know what the word means in the context of gaming and what Xbox consumers want it to mean so to sit there and stretch the definition was a hair annoying.
Lastly, I am a Destiny player. I work a lot and Destiny, despite its many many flaws, captivated me. So, it sucked being on the Xbox side during a content drought, because Lord knows an extra strike or PvP map would have made the gap between expansions less severe.
So, with all that said, the wife and I sat down and decided to switch. Mainly because of the last reason - Destiny 2 is right around the corner and I know I'll be playing it more than any other game for the next three years.
What I can say about the PS4, right off the bat is the dashboard is really nice. It's easier to navigate, and I'm sure it'll be even quicker when I learn all the bells and whistles. Not a fan of how bland the keyboard looks on the screen, but that's a minor nitpick. Controller is inferior to the Xbox in every way, so I'll definitely be finding a way to plug an Elite controller into this rig. I picked up Horizon: Zero Dawn with the switch, it's pretty fun! It's nice to finally be able to play an exclusive instead of standing in the rain for once.
Unless I'm blind, didn't see a Games with Gold equivalent which sucks. But Battlefield 1 was on sale. Nabbed that.
All in all, I'm satisfied with my purchase but I don't feel as though one console dominates the other. Graphics really boils down to the game and how much you throw down for a TV/Monitor, for an average pleb like me anyway. PS4 only really won out because it catered to a game I'm hopelessly addicted to. That said, I dig the console. I grew up a PS2 kid, so it was nice holding the OG style controller again.
Hopefully I'll learn how to shoot straight by the time September 6th rolls around.
That said, what do you guys think? Any tips for a new PS4 owner or game recommendations?
