Xenvaer, Alsakan

Sabine, in all her travels, could not remember ever visiting a place like this before.

Sure, she had seen many advanced worlds, ones with vast cities that sprawled… but an entire city-world? Well, this was certainly something different. The space port alone was the size of some villages and towns of some of the more backwater worlds she’d seen. Looking around with wide-eyes, she pondered which way to go first. It wasn’t often that the young Jedi woman had a chance to explore such a place on her own. Normally, the ever-watchful eye of Master Galen was there nearby.

It was true, though she was quite well-traveled for someone her age, her experiences had not exactly been that of a normal early twenties-something girl. For most, this was the time of entering university and immersing in career-related studies. To a young Jedi, this kind of life was something of a mystery.

Dressed simply, she blended in well-enough on the streets of Xenvaer. Her saber was on her belt, but hidden beneath her jacket. Sabine’s blue eyes roamed the area, watching as people walked the sidewalks, ducking into various shops. Pausing to glance inside a window, she watched as a long queue of people waiting at a café counter. The drinks produced at the end of the line were fancy, bedazzled in whipped cream, sprinkles, and syrups.

Walking into the café, Sabine was immediately met with the strong scent of roasted caf.

She’d never been allowed to try before, but Sabine figured she could go ahead and have just one. Stepping to the end of the line, she looked in awe at the long menu, which was written in language that was foreign. Double-tall caf-a-latte with extra room… What in the blazes was that? Blinking at the menu items, she didn’t quite know what to order. And when her own turn came, the barista looked at her with a frown. This place moved fast, she was clearly holding up the line.

“S-sorry,” Sabine stammered, her mouth suddenly dry. “I’ll, uh, have… a pumpkin spice caffuccino, if you please.”

“Do you want whipped cream?”

Sure… why not?” Sabine said, handing over her credits and standing to the side to wait. She attempted to keep out of the way of the other patrons, and she couldn’t help but feel just a little bit out of place here.

Alsakan; first stop along a brand new trade spine.

After a somewhat stressful time on Coruscant, and a well-paying job gone well, Kal found she had enough credits in pocket to enjoy herself just this once, To visit a world without worrying over the next job, or how she was going to afford to move on to the next. It was strange for her to not be on the hunt, seeking out contacts and job advertisements, but it was a much needed break.

Still, even as she sat there in the caf' shop, sipping some good old jitter juice, she couldn't help but just peek at the local listings on the holonet. Call it force of habit, or boredom, sometimes she didn't even realize she was doing things like that until it was so far done she may as well finish.

It was difficult to just unwind.

Leaning back in her seat, and forcing the datapad away from herself to avoid spying its contents, she let out one long sigh. What did people do, when they weren't working or traveling? She drummed her fingertips against the tabletop, tapped a spoon against the side of her cup, and then sighed again. Leaning forward she planted her elbows on the table and put her head in her hands.

Her bright orange flight suit was only half on, the top part of it had been undone and was tied around her waist to reveal the white tank top usually worn beneath it. Some people might have felt self-conscious wearing such a thing, a full on jumpsuit that screamed Hey, I fly starfighters! but Kal had been wearing the same thing for years now that she hardly noticed it.

That was until people stared. Which some people were right that moment. She looked their way and smiled, unnerving them to no end since they weren't expecting so pleasant a response.

She always loved seeing such a reaction.

At the end of the counter, the barista slid Sabine her blended caf drink. It had a tall tower of whipped cream on top and a bit of cinnamon sprinkled as well. Taking a sip, she was immediately transported to the few autumns she’d spent on Naboo. Now, glancing about the café from over the top of her cup, she pondered whether she ought to stay or go – and where exactly would she go next?

Without an answer, she began to search for a place to sit.

There were many tables that seated only one person, most of which were already taken. But, there were some empty seats scattered about. Sabine wasn’t really a fan of dining alone, so she turned her sights to the crowd of caf drinkers. A rather grumpy looking old man frowned as she passed, and she went by a pair of women that were gossiping at an alarmingly fast rate.

Across the way, there was another young woman with red hair, and Sabine’s brows lofted slightly. Now, this was a possibility for some company. Making her way over, as though part of some secret ginger society, she decided to join her. With her own caf drink in hand, she came to stand near the empty chair at the other woman’s table. Sabine placed her hand on the back of the chair, but didn’t move to pull it out or sit just yet.

“Mind if I join you?” Sabine asked, her tone clear and light.

Interrupted from her boredom-induced daydreams, Kal looked up to find a woman stood across from her.

It took a second or two for her question to register, but when she figured out what she was after she gave a short nod of the head and offered her a smile.

"By all means," she said, with a gesture to the seat, forcing herself to sit upright from her previous head-in-hands position, "A little company never did no harm." In fact, Kal was certain it would have the opposite effect; any longer sat there with nothing to do, and she might have shot herself in the foot just for a trip to the medbay. Not that she often needed to go to the medbay, of course. In fact, that was often one of the worst things she could do. Most doc's just tried to pump her full of bacta and that was never a good idea.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she took in the sight of the girl, and then she looked to the counter where the barista was swiftly serving up cups of caf'. "First time?" she asked, when she shifted her gaze back across to the stranger, "I can feel him staring daggers at you from over here, only other time he's done that today was when someone didn't know what they were after."

And, given that the majority of the Galaxy was not only caf'-addicted but extremely fussy about their order, well, that only really happened when someone was trying it for the first time, or had yet to develop their tastes.

Truth be told Kal wasn't the biggest drinker of caf', which was surprising given the long hours she flew alone in her starfighter. She understood that it was a social thing at this point, and for many a necessity, but straight caf' was gross and if you had to add a bunch of additives and flourish to a drink then was it really something you wanted to be drinking?

She took a sip of her own caf' while thinking on that, the irony not lost on her.

"You got a name?" she asked, after a few moments of that, leaning back in her chair and hearing her back make a few cracking noises. It felt simultaneously great and disgusting at once, and eased some of the tension from her muscles.

Offering a nod and a smile, Sabine slipped into the seat opposite the other young woman with red hair. Though Sabine’s hair was a shade or two lighter, their manes were quite similar. Listening to her new companion’s tone, she couldn’t help but note the way she spoke her words with a slight twang. When the young woman mentioned the barista and the fact that he was staring daggers, Sabine drew her shoulders in slightly and avoided eye contact with the man.

“It’s that obvious?” She asked, sinking down into her seat just so.

Bringing the drink up, she took a long sip from the green straw. By now, the caffuccino was starting to melt; the spiced flavor and overwhelming sweetness dulled enough to make it more palatable. She doubted very much that she’d ever become a caf aficionado, but the drink was tasty. Now Sabine was curious as to the hot varieties of the drink, like the steaming cup upon the table across from her.

“Sabine,” She answered when prompted for her name, “Sabine Galen, pleased to meet you...”

She leaned forward to extend her hand politely over the table top, and left a tiny pause in order for the other woman to provide an introduction as well.

“And as you guessed, I’m not much of a caf drinker.” She tipped her cup in her companion’s direction before taking another small sip. “I was just planning a quick visit here, I’m traveling, you see.”

Letting her palms settle calmly on the table’s polished surface.

“Are you from here, by chance?” She canted her head to the side, “Is there anything I should see before departing?”

"Probably not to most in here," she admitted, with a slight shrug, "But I ain't exactly had much more to do than watch, so..."

Thankfully the barista had swiftly gone back to work, though Kal watched the girl shrink in her seat all the same. She offered a smile, hoping to set the girl back at ease, before shaking her head. "Don't worry over it, so many people come through here that there's no time to dwell on chit, He won't even remember your face in five minutes."

When the woman reached out and gave her name Kal was quick to reciprocate, leaning in to shake her hand while giving her own name. "Mara," she said, with a smile, not providing a surname or anything of the sort. Names were power, and the likelihood of the two of them meeting again after this was so slim that she hardly felt it mattered.

"Nice to meet you, Sabine. Yeah, I'm not much of a caf' drinker myself, just needed somethin' to pass the time. I'm tryin' to keep myself from job huntin', everyone needs a day off every now and then, but I'm so used to being busy that, well..."

She lifted up her mug to emphasize the point, and shrugged as she seemed to do a lot.

"I'm not from here, no, I'm travelin' same as you. But in places such as this? There's so much to do you wouldn't even know where to begin. Sort of stuff you into, Sabine?"

She might not be intimately acquainted with Xenvaer but she could provide suggests at least. How different could it be from the likes of Coruscant, after all? Most of these worlds were the same.

Sabine nodded, a grin tugged at the corner of her mouth and she straightened up in her seat. “Mara,” She said quietly, committing the name to memory. There was no surname to accompany this name, information likely withheld by choice. But, Sabine figured that there was a reason, she wouldn’t question it. Glancing down at her cup on the table, she had to agree that caf drinking was a good way to pass the time.

“Is that so?” She asked, “I guess this is a good place for travelers like us.”

But, Mara’s question caught her off guard. What sort of stuff was she into? It was then that Sabine had to face her embarrassing lack of real hobbies. As a Jedi, her hobbies were sitting in stillness, practicing her saber forms, and going away on missions. These things occupied most of her time, free time of her own was rather rare – hence her awkward caf shop adventure.

“Erm,” Sabine blinked, trying to think up something.

Taking the moment to bring her caffuccino up for another quick sip, and the drink gave her just a bit of inspiration.

“Well, I do like exploring…” She gave a slight shrug, “I normally like more natural settings, this place is far from that – but I think it’ll be fun. I’m up for anything, really.” Sabine said, leaving the possibilities rather open ended.

“Do you know any scenic spots around here? I guess I could just wander about,” She said, looking out towards the window. “Unless, perhaps, you’d care to join me?”

The girl seemed a little lost for words when asked for an idea of her hobbies, and Kal could funnily enough empathize with such.

Perhaps Sabine was a workaholic just as she was, someone prone to jumping from job to job and thus without any real time to sit down and enjoy a quiet moment, or activities which the rest of the Galaxy seemed transfixed by. Though it didn't help that Kal didn't have much of an attention span when it came to sitting still, unless she was flying of course. That was always the outlier.

"Explorin' is always fun," she agreed, as she finished up the last of the caf' in her mug and let out a quiet yet appreciative sigh. One cup was more than enough for her, and she'd managed to stretch it out for quite some time now, but with the promise of adventure lingering on the horizon she figured it was high time she quit stalling. Besides, it was cold at this point.

"I don't know any spots, but if you'd like we can go uncover some. Not like I have anything else to do with my day, and I'd hate for you to head off out there alone without a sense of direction."

While this world was arguably not so bad as, say, the Undercity of Coruscant, there were still gangs and shadier characters splattered about. But then, which world couldn't say the same?

Either way, two would definitely be better than one.

Rising up from her spot, she moved just a few feet in order to place the used mug down at the end of the counter before turning back to Sabine. Whether the woman would rather finish her drink first, or walk with it, she obviously did not know, but in order to alleviate some of the pressure she might be feeling at the fact Kal had already finished she walked back to her chair and took a seat.

"Probably some nice green space hidden among all these high rises," she remarked, "Richer folk love that sort of thing, and this area is full of their types."

As Mara finished off her drink, Sabine looked down at her own. Her cup still half-full, she lifted it up into her palm. She could always finish it on the way; she supposed that was a better option than sucking it all down in one gulp and possibly getting a brain freeze. Mara was back a moment later, seated across from her once more. And so, Sabine took the chance to take a few more small sips of her caf.

“You think so?” Her brows rose thoughtfully, “I think that sounds like a plan.”

Sabine’s own interactions with the “richer folk” were few and far between. But she knew the type, the kind of people that seemed to be too tied up in their own minds to notice others. While she liked to generally avoid making judgements, there were just some people that made Sabine shake her head.

Looking out the window again, she let her blue eyes roam the city-scape that waited for them outside. There were tall sky-scrapers and elegantly designed buildings, and there in the distance… a bit of green sticking up between – trees.

“Could be a park or something out that way,” She pointed, “We could wander that way and see what we find.” Sabine nodded and added a smile to punctuate her point. In truth, she would be glad to leave the bustling caf shop behind her. Swinging her legs to the side, she stood to her feet, ready to head for the door. Instead of bolting directly for the exit, she figured that it would be best to continue their conversation.

“You mentioned job hunting before, what sort of work are you in?”

Sabine appeared to be rather astute, pointing out the tops of trees off in the distance which no doubt hinted at the aforementioned greenspace.

"Looks like it could be," she replied, rising from the seat she'd just returned to and stretching out her limbs, the joints and muscles of which always seemed to be somewhat stiff and sore. "Are you here with a specific purpose, Sabine? Anythin' you gotta do aside from explorin'?"

Checking the table for anything that she might have left behind, and snatching up the datapad which had almost faced that fate, she gestured for the woman to go on ahead toward the door. Thankfully she wasn't the type who felt as though they had to rush their drink just because someone else had, she'd hung around with way too many of those types. Didn't understand how it could be enjoyable.

"Oh, you know, whatever pays. Courierin', ferryin', fixin' chit. Whatever lets me keep my Solitude goin'."

It was actually rather nice out, when they stepped out from under the awning of the cafe. No rain to be seen, sunlight dripping from the skies, a tender breeze. She soaked it all in, inhaling softly, before turning toward the treetops they'd seen from the window.

"What about you? What does your life consist'a?"

With that, the two ginger women were out the door. Even a few steps away, Sabine could still hear the jazzy music and clinking classes of the coffee house behind them. The ambience shifted to the sound of footsteps on the sidewalk, idle chats, and speeders going by. She brought a hand up to shield her eyes for a moment as she glanced up at the tall buildings that rose into the sky. Turning her gaze back to Mara, she listened as she gave an answer.

Canting her head to the side slightly, she realized that the other woman must certainly be a pilot. At least, it sounded like she had a ship of her own to take care of.

“So, you’re a pilot, then?” She asked, just to confirm. “I’ve never been great at flying.Sabine added with a chuckle, for it was very true. It was a large part of the reason that she and her Master generally let others do the flying, choosing to travel by way of transports and the like.

When the question came back her way, she had a decision to make. Did she want to reveal her status as a Jedi Knight to a new acquaintance? It wasn’t strictly secret, but there were occasions where she had not received very warm welcomes.

“Oh, me? I do a bit of everything, but mainly travel about… going wherever I can help.” She said, smiling. “I have a bit of a humanitarian focus; I like to provide aid when I can. But, right now I’m in between things, just traveling to meet back up with my father.”

The trees in the distance visible as their target destination, she walked at a leisurely pace.

“So, it sounds like we both get around… where are you from?”

[member="Kalyn Shif"]

"Huh," she said in response, dumbfounded by her own waffling ways, "That would be the more concise way of puttin' it yeah. A pilot. 'bout the only thing I am good at." Well that and general ship related nonsense like maintenance, and upgrades, and the like. "Never really pays much, but it's enough to keep my girl in the air and that's what matters, no?"

Kal blinked back the somewhat harsher light of day as the sun rays beat down on them, though her eyes adjusted rather quickly, and then they were off down the main street, two ants amidst a whole colony of others. Truthfully though they seemed to be the only ones who were not in a rush, with some place important to be, the anxiety stricken expression of so many of the natives really put a dampener on her spirits for a moment before she chose instead to look toward their destination rather than those who they shared the road with.

"Sounds like a humble life," she told the woman, after she mentioned that her business was more so humanitarian aid, "Must do a lot of good in a Galaxy as fethed up as ours." All of the constant wars and misery brought about by corrupt governments, the likes of which Kal was actively seeking to avoid? It was a surprise Sabine had any time to herself at all. "Travelin', though, that's what I do too. I take it you seen much of the Galaxy, then?"

For a moment there she wondered what it might be like if she decided to meet up with her mother in the future, or even have the possibility of unearthing her father's identity, but truth be told she'd come so far without them, with static silence on their end, that she was bitterly against even trying to hold out that olive branch.

Instead she shook her head and pressed on, allowing the fresh air to blow such thoughts from her mind.

"I was actually born on The Wheel," she informed the woman, with full sincerity, "Though I high tailed out of there as soon as I was able. Awful place, really." Most only saw the pleasant sides of it, of course, it was an entertainment-based station for the most part, gaudy, full of bright lights and music, eye-candy and sin. Hardly the place to raise a child. "What about you? You look like you're from some place nicer, probably with a lot of greenery, and crisp fresh air?" It was just a guess, of course, but she seemed well-adjusted if a little out of place within this urban sprawl they'd found one another in.
