PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
View here. Note - this is a rough reference and not an exact artistic impression.
Makani's skin is a pale yellow-green wrapped around an angular jaw, rising over sharp cheekbones high on his face, beneath much softer and kinder eyes - lit in a warming amber. His lips are dark like wet sand. They pull upwards slightly at the corners of his mouth, always hinting at a faint passive smile. The bridge of his nose is quite wide, enough to fit a tattoo of a black concave arrowhead that points up into his forehead. As is tradition, more shapes are laid out around it, in honour of his former deeds, neat and precise in their regular geometry. There is still plenty of room for more.

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS
Though he grew up on Phaeda, Makani's family took great care to honour the culture of their ancestral homeworld Mirial. In doing so he learned to revere and respect the Force from a young age, despite his own lack of sensitivity. This devotion became harder and harder to justify as he grew up with the galaxy crumbling around him, sapping at his sense of hope. It never quite left though - the guiding hand of the Force always at his back when it was needed most.
His feelings remain mixed. Service with the Galactic Alliance Defence Forces has afforded the opportunity to witness the Force as an agent of creation and destruction in equal measure. He follows the logic that the Jedi and the Force are not one and the same; his implicit trust in the force is not necessarily conferred to those who wield it. Support for the Alliance is strong nonetheless, enough to want to put his own life on the line in its defence. Makani is emboldened by his desire for a free, fair society for all, and an ambition to push back the darker forces in the galaxy that would prey upon it.
Makani does his best to appear social, but often will lack the courage to speak unless spoken to. He communicates far more naturally through deeds, whether it be small acts of kindness or expressions of battlefield initiative. His demeanour is usually positive, but decisions made that don't fall in line with his perception of 'good' - which is to say, his perception of the will of the Force - will be quite distressing. As a soldier he is young, and still naïve, looking up to more experienced soldiers for guidance and wisdom.
STRENGTHS
+ Natural dexterity: Mirialans are known for their agility and Makani is no exception. Though his armour is a limiting factor, Makani is a competent athlete and has an aptitude for dodging and ducking his way out of danger.
+ Loyal through and through: Though it might speak to his naivety, Private Kandor is very eager to get in his superiors' good graces, eagerly taking on any responsibilities bestowed upon him. He's said to be reliable and committed to the Alliance - a dedication which will surely only get stronger as his experience grows.
+ Attuned to the Force: Makani is definitively not force-sensitive. Still, there's a hint of something there.
WEAKNESSES
- Inexperienced Fighter: Good results during training doesn't mean much on a real battlefield. Makani is untested and still has a lot to prove in direct combat, and could be a liability if left undirected in a hostile area.
- Isolated childhood: Makani had a difficult time learning about the modern realities of the wider galaxy when he was young - his only sources being misleading propaganda and wistful tales of days gone by. Therefore, his understanding of current events is off by a few years at best.
- Apprehensive: He might have gotten better at hiding it over time, but Makani's sense of duty and loyalty is in a constant state of conflict with his stress and anxiety. This is understandable for a lot of scenarios - war, conflict, and death is never easy to handle - but even being in the presence of his superiors or exploring an unfamiliar location can be a nerve-wracking experience.
BACKSTORY
The first Kandor to settle down on Phaeda did so, as most do, out of desperation. The exact story is lost to time but the tale passed down to generations since tells of a curt, roguish woman who swindled her way up and down the Hydian Way, smuggling goods, cleaning out casinos and luring gullible investors into lining her pockets with gold. Her crimes inevitably caught up with her after many years, forcing her to abandon her vast fortune in favour of her life - albeit one that would be quiet and miserable in the depths of a soulless urban sprawl. Her descendants have remained on Phaeda ever since, never able to escape its criminal underhive. Some have tried to live out honest lives, enduring endless sickness and poverty, but this only made them easy prey for street gangs and racketeers. Others became those very things, raking in ill-gotten riches only to die quickly, and violently.
Makani is the second son of Gannick and Lhoren Kandor- a street food vendor and a professional burglar. They, in some ways, had the best of both worlds - an honest income providing a necessary service, supplemented by a few smashed windows and a trip to the closest fence. There was an understanding between them that, while this was hardly what they wanted, it was necessary to even attempt to make a better life. For them, that meant raising enough money to leave Phaeda and make the long, possibly dangerous journey back to Kandors have always dreamed of returning to Mirial, no matter what path they have chosen through life. This sole aspiration has kept the family united through decades of misfortune. [WIP]
