Intent: To create a concrete, canon-grounded countermeasures package, as most canon countermeasures are either overpowered game tech or vague
Development Thread: No
Manufacturer: Silk Holdings
Model: QQ-4U85 Tractor Shroud
Affiliation: Open market
Modularity: It is, in point of fact, a module
Production: Mass-produced
Material: Electronics, trac-reflective plates, fibercord
Description: The tractor shroud is a module, easily attachable to the aft hull of any Silk Holdings freighter, which can be used to baffle tractor beams. Clouds of trac-reflective debris are often used as shrouds, but in space, the debris continues moving, dissipating the shroud relatively quickly. The module holds five wave-layered charges, which each contain many small trac-reflective plates secured to each other with fibercord.
A mild explosive charge deploys the plates to the maximum extension of the fibercord, creating a loose ball 100 metres across. Tractor and pressor beams have significant difficulty moving the sphere, and so long as the pilot keeps the sphere at least partially between tractor beams and his ship, tractor beams cannot lock onto or significantly affect his ship. Obviously it is most suitable for straight-line escapes, but debris from the charge's detonation, and occasional plates torn free from their moorings, make the borders of the shroud effect somewhat ambiguous. Weapons fire will destroy the fibercord moorings easily and scatter the plates, but this will only succeed in creating a standard shroud effect.
For vessels which measure their cargo capacity in lift strength, the QQ-4U85 Tractor Shroud occupies 10 tons, making it a potentially costly choice. For wide vessels, or cargo ships of capital scale, multiple QQ-4U85 units should be attached. The module can be fitted to most vessels of light freighter size, regardless of manufacturer.
