So, aside from starting gear, do you have to role play buying new gear such as weapons? I am planning on switching out my repeater for a more suitable heavy weapon: http://starwarsrp.net/topic/7011-oprc-1-rotary-blaster-cannon/ . Do I now have to buy the item?

I believe you would have to be a member of the faction. The weapon belongs to the Protectorate and I think they wouldn't want anybody else to have it (unless, they like sell it in the Marketplace). But if you are already a member, you should contact the heads of the Protectorate ([member="Ayden Cater"]) or the member who made this weapon ([member="Noah Corek"]). I think they could answer your question.
