TRAITS

  • Jedi Master: Possessing a natural affinity for the Force, Rani has all the standard abilities of a Jedi Master with an emphasis on the deeper mysteries of the Force, classifying her as a Consular. She is primarily a Healer, but is also skilled in "nature abilities" such as Beast Control, Plant Surge, and Hydrokinesis.
  • Craftsman: Rani was trained to carve wood and bone as per the traditions of her people. She is highly self-sufficient and has survival skills honed from years living in the wilderness of Kashyyyk.
  • Wingless: Rani lost her wings years ago in battle. She can use the Force to fly over short distances, but must rely on birds and other forms of transportation (your shoulders?) for longer treks. Being cut off from the Force would obviously have very severe consequences for her mobility.
  • Size Matters Not?: Standing at a mere five inches tall, Rani faces many difficulties when living amongst larger beings. In particular, it is nearly impossible for her to use standard technology. When possible, she will arrange for miniature versions of some devices, but she will never be able to drive a speeder or pilot a starship.
  • Glass Figure: Due to her size and speed, Rani is hard to hit—but her tiny body is fragile, and even the mildest of impacts can cause serious injury or death.

APPEARANCE:

Rani is an As-Aki, a species of tiny winged humanoids found on only a handful of worlds; she stands at just five inches tall with a slender, willowy build. Though she is physically only a little over twenty years old, by the standards of her species she is considered elderly. Use of the Light Side of the Force has kept her relatively youthful and spry, though one can hear her true age in her voice and see it in her deep blue eyes. She lost her wings in battle years ago and now relies upon the Force to levitate around. Her hair is golden blonde and very long, trailing nearly down to her feet. She must wear extremely lightweight clothing so as not to restrict her mobility; she is frequently seen to wear blue, a color associated with mourning in her culture.

Born on Kashyyyk, Rani was the youngest of twenty-four children—quite average for an As-Aki brood. At the age of two her parents died of old age; her elder siblings agreed that she should be sent to the nearby Silver Rest to become a Jedi. Because of her species' short lifespan, her training was accelerated so that she would achieve knighthood at around the age of ten, midlife for an As-Aki.

Rani found it difficult to make friends at the academy, both due to her size and her rapid aging, which caused her to mature much faster than her peers. Despite this, she was at one point very close to Kassogtha Cthylla, who was the same age as her. Their relationship continued even after Rani was knighted, though the two had trouble relating to one another due to being at very different stages in their lives. By the time Kass reached adulthood, she had lost contact with her childhood friend.

After her knighthood at age ten, Rani returned to her people to find a mate. She married at eleven, which was considered rather late in life, and would go on to bear just nine children before the death of her husband. Because she was a Jedi, she held a position of great influence within her tribe... at least, in theory. The As-Aki at that time were constantly at war with each other, fighting over land and resources. Despite counselling peaceful coexistence, Rani's words too often fell on deaf ears.

After one such battle cost her her wings, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Power wasn't something she had ever wanted, but she was tired of the bloodshed and believed it was holding her people back. She made a successful bid to become the new matriarch of her tribe, and for a time she managed to "civilize" the As-Aki. Her reign was prosperous and, in the blink-quick lives of her species, it marked a golden age.

In 880 ABY, Rani mysteriously disappeared without a trace. She was by then of advanced age, and her people assumed she had become one with the Force. In her absence the peace she had so carefully built collapsed and the tribes went back to warring with each other. To this day, the As-Aki insist upon fighting; Rani's great-grandson Emrys now leads the tribe against members of other species deep within the forests of Kashyyyk.

The name of Rani Baros became a legend as her innumerable descendants spread stories of her exploits, often with wildly exaggerated details that contradicted Rani's actual personality and philosophy. Rather than the pacifist healer she was in life, they recast her as a warrior, claiming she had defeated a terrentatek, slain a giant serpent, waged war at the bottom of the sea, and so on and so forth. These tall tales may have a kernel of truth to them, but they have become so muddled in the telling as to sound absurd to anyone who truly knew her.

So, what really happened to Rani? It's high time the truth was revealed...
