Private (Re)Learn to Fly

Ura sat there, looking at the starfighters in the Silver Landing. She hadn't been up since her fighter finally crashed for the last time. The main issue was that she didn't know how to fly anything outside of a Sienar control scheme. She was never trained in Y-TIE flying, so she didn't know the Y-Wing controls, and she'd never had a chance to fly an X-Wing or A-Wing so now, she was kind of stuck. She needed new training, and thankfully Liram had offered to help.

The Levon leaned back, not sure what exactly to expect from training, but she'd at least have some new experience. She looked at one of the fighters, running a hand over the wing. Hopefully she'd be flying again soon.

"So much for a day off"

"The Lib" was in drydock getting some very minor repairs done. She was more than mobile and capable of going back out, but Liram wasn't going to let her. Not like Captain Auris, who seemed to operate behind the proverbial eight ball all the time on that sort of thing. That is neither here nor there though, so the Captain gave the crew the weekend off, keeping only a skeleton crew operating as necessary and in shifts. This gave him the chance to help someone out who needed it. She was a pilot and had lost her fighter recently, and while this would not normally concern him(these things happen to the best of pilots, he's lost more than his share), she wanted to learn how to fly the other fighters that were available. So, he pulled a few strings and brought out some of the fighters that he normally had on "The Lib". The NC1 X-WIng, The A-Wing Interceptor, The Y-wing, A Torpedo Bomber, a Strategic Bomber, and in the background, there was another. This one he flew down himself. It was built by Lucerne Defense specifically for Voodoo Wing at Angellus' request. The Jackal Class Superiority fighter.

"You ready for this?"

Sure, he had a snarky comment that he could have made, but even Liram knew when to do so, and when not to. There was no point to it. Besides, he liked the Sa... s... he liked Ura.

Ura turned, a bit surprised as she saw Liram.

"Oh! Hey! I mean.... Yes sir. I'm ready." She looked over all the fighters there, still trying to wrap her head around everything. She then looked back, tilting her head a little.

"So... how do these fighters perform? Lervon fighters may look like... some of these, I doubt they fly the same." Ura felt like she back in militia basic training, but she needed to do this. If she was going to help the Sliver Jedi in space, she'd need to learn to fly more standard craft, just in case. It made her feel a bit odd though. She knew how to fly, but at the same time she didn't know how to fly anything but the Deathseed fighters. The Lervon seemed to shift around her crystal mass out of a combination of nervousness and excitement.

Liram chuckled and looked over the Jedi Padawan.

"Okay, I might be an Ace. I might also be Captain of a carrier, but you're a Jedi. You don't call me 'Sir'. Not necessary, okay? I know it's a sign of respect, but I respect you as well."

It may have come off a little abrupt, but one thing an Angellus did was show respect where it was warranted. Throughout their history, the family had closely worked with and associated the Order and this was no different. So why would he change that? No reason whatsoever. So without really dwelling on that any further, the Captain walked around the fighters. Each of them has their own specialties and that made him think about the best way to answer Ura's question. She flew an "ugly", a "Y-Tie" so it was hard to compare what was what, but then it hit him.

"You're used to a fighter that has a strong frame, but some speed built into it. I would say that your best bet is with the X-wing. She's fast where she needs to be, packs a huge punch, and the onboard astromech can help keep flight-worthy even after a couple of hits."

Waving her over and climbing up one of the ladders, so she could climb the opposite side, he pointed out a few parts of the cockpit to try and ease her mind.

"The good thing about these fighters is, for the most part, they all have almost identical control systems. If you can learn to fly one, you can fly all of them, except for the Jackal over there, that takes a little more, not much though. You might know how to fly these more than you think you do, depending on how your cockpit in your old fighter looked like."

"Oh.... Old habit. I was training in the Yurbian Militia before I started Jedi training." She then looked at the X-Wing. So the fighters had the same controls? That would be good, and the X-Wing could have an astromech? Interesting. Maybe she'd make a new friend while training too. Ura would climb up to look in the cockpit, taking in the controls. It reminded her of a Y-TIE back h..... That her people used. She would then think back to her old fighter, sighing a little.

"Well... I flew a Deathseed, so it had a Sienar control scheme, but I can learn!" Ura's eyes hinted at her happiness with the idea of getting back in the cockpit. It had been way too long at this point since she'd flown anything.

"R9, come on over here."

The Astromech roared to life, almost as if it was bored to tears sitting on the side, happily the droid rolled over and under the fighter, as the "lift" pulled into the Astromech position the droid connected to the ship and new systems sprang to life. Everything in the cockpit was abuzz all of the sudden. Nothing life-changing6, or frightening, but more to give an idea of exactly what this fighter was capable of. Soon some Aurbesh text zipped up onto the screen. It read "Greetings, I am R9-T9, I will be assisting you. Are you ready to launch?"

"Not yet, '99', just help walk her through the systems on the ship."

"Certainly, Captain Angellus."

"You're welcome to work with "99" until you find a droid you mesh well with, or if you like you can keep him as your partner, up to you. You'll find that astromechs aren't the 'tools' some droids can tend to be."

Liram, like many an Angellus before him, back to his ancestor Arestul always seemed to have a healthy respect for astromech droids. In fact, his droid "R8-D0" or "Radio" had been in the family since he served with Admiral Arestul Angellus. That was a story for another time, though.

"One thing about TIE's... their center controls are the same as the side controls on a Y, or an X-wing. Just the hand placements are different. You're not reaching in front of you, you're hands are on either side. It'll take a little getting used to, but that is a good thing about having an onboard astromech. They can take over piloting the ship if need be."

Ura was exited when she saw the droid roll up. Liram called him 99. She waved at the droid before sliding into the cockpit, slowing testing to get a feel for it. Then he went over how the controls compared to a TIE cockpit. Ok. That wasn't too bad. She would look back at the droid, flipping through a few of the systems. Power distributer, the Aurbesh translator, and the other systems that she'd need. The Lervon turned back to look at 99, then Liram, seeming to get excited as she got a feel of the cockpit.

"This feels nice, and I know droid can be a lot more than tools. I'm sure 99 here will be great help. So... what do we do now?"

It was good to see that she was picking up on this. these fighters can be intimidating to the uninitiated and if she was a quick study, regardless of her affinity to the Force, then all the better.

"Either go up for real. Or practice in a simulator."

Pointing to the simulators, the choice was hers.

Ura looked at Liram, then the simulators. She looked back at the controls. Even without a mouth, her eyes seemed to show how happy she was to be in a cockpit. She then looked back at 99.

"What do you think, 99?" The Lervon chuckled a little when the droid answered, giving her own. "I usually like to get a real feel for a ship. We didn't have sims back home."

"Up to you. You'll find almost no difference in the simulators from the real thing."

Liram did indeed notice how happy she seemed to be, and it actually made him smile. The "Devil Pilot" was a snarky jerk, and he knew it, he didn't like hardly anyone that he wasn't directly working with on a daily basis. Ura was different as they had been on ops together. On top of that, Angellus was always willing to help out another pilot. The more pilots out there, the better.

sjogrungesmol1.png

Ura looked at Liram, thinking again. So the simulator was similar to actually flying. Still.... She really wanted to actually fly again. Ura would look over, closing her eyes before flipping some switches.

"Well, if it's up to me, I want to fly." She got confused by a couple of controls, quickly making sure she would know what they did before going up. She looked at everything, taking it in. When it was time though, she'd start the engines and got ready to take off.

"Alrighty, 99 will monitor and be there to back you up as needed."

Looking off at the other, older astromech, Liram yelled out.

"Radio! You wanna play with that new Jackal?!" the droid hadn't had a memory wipe in a LONG time so all of the personality that it could muster came back in an enthusiastic acknowledgment. "Me too, get her started up, I'll be there in a minute."

As the droid, who could not be any happier right now rolled over to the fighter and linked in, Liram showed a rare resplendent smile and looked back at the pilot in front of him. "Alright, give me a sec to get started up. We'll do a couple of trench runs."
