In the aftermath of the Core-Imperial Confederation’s sudden, and inexplicable collapse, the Republic Engineering Corporation found itself in possession of a priceless artifact. It was a functioning database that possessed the ancient schematics of vessels that were long-forgotten by the Galaxy at large. Every warship and starfighter that ever served the Old Republic were now in the hands of those that had the skills to give their venerable designs new life within the modern era. As more and more code was translated from one database to another, the various design teams within the Shipwright Division began rolling out their newfound designs to the Board of Directors; who ultimately gave them the green light to pursue the various items that were attached to Project: Restoration.
Whilst several design teams found themselves in possession of ancient schematics for the largest vessels within the Old Republic’s navy, there was a team that found itself tasked with re-creating the smaller vessels. The intent was to flesh out a prospective customer’s navy with combat-capable warships that would be able to fit a variety of roles, but within their respective classifications for costing and staffing purposes. Much to the chagrin of Warlord’s across time and space, there was no such thing as a perfect warship. Thus, as it ever was, entire armada’s were populated by warships that filled a multitude of roles - each seeking to cover the weakness of their sister ships.
However, despite the ever-increasing amount of gargantuan starships, there was an ever-present need for space superiority starfighters - especially models that were capable of charging head-first into the fray and leaving nothing but ashes in their wake.
Such as it was, that the technical architects found themselves in charge of resurrecting and ultimately restoring the legacy of the ARC-170 which spearheaded the Old Republic’s push back against the rising Separatist threat. The vessel itself was a fine ship, as it suited a dual purpose on the spatial battlefield. Not only could the starfighter plunge into the heart of enemy formations, but it could also operate as a long-range reconnaissance vessel; aggressively scouting ahead of friendly forces to probe the enemy’s strength. However, one of the most glaring weaknesses that the starfighter endured was its weapon placement - something that’d affect the X-wing series years later.
With their weapons placed further away from the fuselage, there was a significant chance that their discharged plasmatic bolts would miss their targets. But, there was one redeeming factor about the starfighter was that it came with a tail-mounted laser cannon, capable of shooting at pursuing targets - an incredible boon that found itself removed from starfighters until the First Order devised a way to revive that technology. So, with these factors in mind, the design team of Project: Restoration set out to rebuild the venerable design and perfect the flaws; making it a more manageable craft in terms of manpower, and considerably more deadly in the ever-shifting throes of combat.
They began with weapon placement. While having the weapon systems placed on the wings was reminiscent of the original design, and the X-wing series that came after, it created issues in a dogfight. More often than not, the pilots would find themselves missing their target. To counter this design flaw, the technical architects mounted the wing-tip cannons on a remotely-controlled lateral rotation turret. This design choice allowed the pilot to align their cannons with their target, rather than having to maneuver the starship to draw a bead on their enemy. In addition to the wing-mounted modules, the starfighter was equipped with fuselage-mounted weapons - which wouldn’t require much skill, or technical expertise, to draw a bead on their intended target.
Everything else that was once found within the starfighter, was removed and replaced with more modern and advanced technologies. All that was left was a name to christen their new technological creation. Like the combat shuttle before this starfighter, there were those amongst the team that believed their restoration should honour one of the many War Heroes from the Clone Wars. However, they ran into the issue of perception and believed that another name would be more fitting - one that wasn't tied to the terrible anchors of the past. So, after much deliberation, the ARC-170 and the Bacara evolved into the R-wing - which was done in honour of the company that refashioned the venerable design.
Yet, some could even say that it was also a secret love letter to the nascent Republic growing on Corellia. Or, that when the letter was taken and quadrupled, it would look like the prow section of the starfighter if they were stacked atop one another and mirrored.
Only the design team themselves would know the truth.
