With the presence of Lightsabre-wielding warriors becoming commonplace on the various battlefields across the known universe, the technical architects within the Republic Engineering Corporation sought to make something that’d help level the playing field. While blasters were effective weaponry, especially when deployed en masse, they weren’t effective against an enemy wielding the exotic plasma swords of the Jedi or Sith. Blasters became a dual-edged weapon when paired against Lightsabres, simply because their discharged lethality could be reflected back at the weapon’s operator. This wouldn’t do, especially not for a weapon that was meant to balance the scales against such a powerful enemy.
So, the technical architects believed that an exotic variant of the plasma-based weaponry would suit their needs perfectly. Thus, the decision was made to adopt the particle beam technology. The difference between conventional blaster bolts and those generated by a particle beam weapon was that the bolts were less densely packed on the particulate level and highly energized - which resulted in an unstable, and incredibly powerful projectile. The erratic nature of the bolt also provided to be quite effective against Lightsabre-wielding opponents, as the bolt would violently explode when it came into contact with the plasmatic weapon; bathing the Jedi or Sith behind it in a wash of highly energized plasma. In addition to detonating on contact with a projected energy field, the discharged projectile also exploded on contact with a physical, solid object.
With the technological path sorted, the weapon designers began to settle on an aesthetic - one that would ideally inspire fear in the minds of those that sought to upset the balance of power. According to the degraded pages of history, the ancient incarnation of the Galactic Republic utilized the weapon known as the DC-17m to wage war against the rising threat of Separatists, and later the traitorous members of the Jedi Order as well. Thus, they made their newest weapon in the likeness of such an ancient relic - not only in the hopes invoking the DC-17m’s terrible legacy of slaughtering the Jedi during their short-lived revolt but giving the common soldiery a chance to stand against their supposed betters.
Despite the weapon’s already potent stopping power, the aptly named “Viperwasp” was built with versatility in mind - so that the rifle could fulfill a multitude of roles on the battlefield, aside from the standard high-powered blaster. The first module that was created for the modular weapon system was the rail attachment that was affixed to the forefront of the weapon that turned the blaster rifle into a plasma-driven sniper rifle. The technology operated along similar principles similar to the primary weapons of the Sun Guard, or the ancestral bowcasters of the Wookiees. With the blaster module swapped out for the sniper attachment, the loading mechanism of the rifle changed - allowing for an exterior cartridge to be utilized. In recognition of that new avenue, the designers elected to use highly explosive quarrels which would be capable of punching holes into, or through armoured targets before detonating.
To round out the trifecta of the “Viperwasp” and its deadly capabilities, the final module turned the weapon into a dedicated anti-armour platform; by outfitting the rifle with an external tube launcher with a flexible housing. This attachment would provide the Operator with much-needed firepower that wouldn’t be commonly available to the common soldiery, as they’d be able to engage more heavily-armoured target(s) with relative ease. With the integration of a flexible housing, the anti-armour attachment was capable of not only catapulting its standard allotment of high-explosive grenades - but the tube could be adapted to launch other variants of explosives as well. However, there were structural limitations, as only cylindrical tubes could be utilized within the launcher, which ultimately narrowed the marginally expanded engagement profile.
Thus, when all of these attachments were in the hands of a capable Operator - the “Viperwasp” proved capable of being one of the deadliest weapons in the galaxy. Woe betides those who stood before this weapon’s righteous fury.
