There comes a time where an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, creating an eternal struggle that would last until either aspect faltered.
Such was the current state that the Galaxy found itself in. Dozens of seemingly unstoppable threats conspired to dominate the battlefield through various means, as they pitted themselves against their respective equals - time and again. Yet, there was only one factor that truly tipped the scales in favour of one side or another. No, it wasn’t the mystical energy field of the Force, nor was it the Strength of a person’s arms, or their Character. All of those details were utterly meaningless when it came to the ebb and flow of combat. Was it Luck, perhaps? There was a chance that it was, as a lucky strike could see a combatant living to fight another day, or ending the conflict entirely. But, such a factor was fickle and couldn’t be relied upon. Thus, the only factor that truly mattered was the technology that the unstoppable force or the immovable object wielded in battle, that’d effectively tip the scales in either’s favour.
And so, it was from this innate desire to offer the best of the best, that the Republic Engineering Corporation embarked upon an endless quest, with an ever-shifting destination. Along their journey, however, their technical architects came across countless moments of inspiration - which in turn have led to some of the most dangerous and advanced technologies that were available to the common market. The REC-PHC/01 "Devastator" - Pattern Magcannon was but one of these creations borne from a refuelled muse and would prove to be a weapon worthy of its epithet.
The Magcannon was, to put it simply, a miniaturized and sapient-portable hypervelocity cannon that discharged a single projectile from an auto-loading mechanism to devastating effect, not only to the projectile but the target themselves.
Mass-driven weapons weren’t uncommon. There were a plethora of delivery means that ranged from simple pistols to massive starship cannons that were based upon magnetic acceleration technology. The “Devastator” was no different. Yet, it stood apart from the similar weapons that this Magcannon held a measure of kinship with. Handheld Railguns operated on a singular rail system that dragged a ferromagnetic projectile towards terminal velocities, often leading towards fatalistic conditions to those who found themselves on the receiving edge of the weapon’s fury. The Magcannon operated on a combination of a standard rail system, magnetic solenoids, and electrothermal propellant vaporization - which released the projectile at speeds rivalling deflector-shielded starfighters.
Thus, the “Devastator” was deserving of its epithet. Not only because of the speed at which it could discharge their projectiles but from the resultant impact. Now, the impact itself was variable, depending on the mode(s) of the Magcannon, but the results would likely be the same against a myriad of targets. The impact between the nigh-unstoppable force of the impactor - or the discharged projectile - and the immovable object, would see both objects temporarily becoming fluidic in their states, or vaporizing them entirely. Both avenues of terminal lethality were possible with the “Devastator,” as the weapon came with two firing modes built into its design. While the standard, Precision-based mode was of little note, it was the Bombardment Mode that was worthy of note.
The secondary firing mode of the “Devastator” caused the weapon to undergo several structural changes, as the forward-mounted tines that formed the “barrel” of the mass-driver found themselves unlocking, and splitting into four parts - rather than the standard two. This process activated the secondary power nodes within the weapon, allowing all three methods of magnetic acceleration to transpire at once. However, one of the most notable flaws with this mode is the significant measure of time that was required to discharge the auto-fed projectile. Yet, once that slice of progress had come and gone, that gathered lethality would be unleashed, only to be met by devastation of variable degrees.
Therefore, to those that wielded the “Devastator,” they would find themselves capable of balancing the ever-shifting scales between the unstoppable force, and their opposite number, the immovable object. Newton Vult.
