In the aftermath of the Core-Imperial Confederation’s sudden, and inexplicable collapse, the Republic Engineering Corporation found itself in possession of a priceless artifact. It was a functioning database that possessed the ancient schematics of vessels that were long-forgotten by the Galaxy at large. Every warship and starfighter that ever served the Old Republic were now in the hands of those that had the skills to give their venerable designs new life within the modern era. As more and more code was translated from one database to another, the various design teams within the Shipwright Division began rolling out their newfound designs to the Board of Directors; who ultimately gave them the green light to pursue the various items that were attached to Project: Restoration.
Whilst several design teams found themselves in possession of ancient schematics for the largest vessels within the Old Republic’s navy, there was a team that found itself tasked with re-creating the smaller vessels. The intent was to flesh out a prospective customer’s navy with combat-capable warships that would be able to fit a variety of roles, but within their respective classifications for costing and staffing purposes. Much to the chagrin of Warlord’s across time and space, there was no such thing as a perfect warship. Thus, as it ever was, entire armada’s were populated by warships that filled a multitude of roles - each seeking to cover the weakness of their sister ships.
However, despite the ever-increasing amount of gargantuan starships, there was an ever-present need for fast-moving interceptors; who’s mission profile was to engage hostile warheads and starfighters.
With such thoughts in mind, the technical architects at the Republic Engineering Corporation looked to the past in order to create a vessel worthy of the myriad demands of the future. In diving into the proverbial treasure that the company recently obtained, they found the technical schematics of the Alpha-3 Nimbus-Class V-wing Starfighter - which acted as both a space superiority and interceptor. The aerodynamic frame and narrow structural profile made the starfighter a nightmare for whoever found themselves flying against the Nimbus.
Thus, the design team believed this venerable starfighter would be a perfect fit for the modern era; especially when discharged warheads were becoming more and more prominent on the spatial battlefield.
As the schematics that came before it, the V-wing found its internal systems wholly gutted and replaced by highly advanced components that weren't available during the tumultuous throes of the Clone War. In addition to the system's overhaul, the design was given two fuselage-mounted laser cannons; which were stutter-fire capable and permitted the pilot to swiftly draw a bead on their target - without having to alter their projected trajectory. While considered standard by any means in regards to an Interceptor's armament, it was further supplemented by armoured Antimissile octets, which would assist the craft in shredding through missiles and hostile starfighters alike. However, those aforementioned weapons didn't have the range of their plasmatic cousins and forced the pilot to get a lot closer than they'd like in order for their spent munitions to strike home.
As before, the only thing that remained was a name. While they originally wanted to name the vessel after a Hero of the Clone Wars - REC eventually believed that it would be in poor taste due to the horrors that transpired during that violent era. So, they settled on bequeathing the ancient moniker of the 'V-wing' to the Interceptor, on account of its structural design when viewed in its landing configuration.
