SETTING INFORMATION
City Name: Red Sands
Classification: Large Urban Center
Location: Laranis II
Affiliation: Laranis System Protectorate
Population: Moderate (1.8 million)
Demographics: Human (27%), Sullustan (32%), Wookie (4%), Rodian (20%), Other (17%)
Wealth: Low. While most here might be considered working poor or working class, there are a few - including criminals - who have made a decent living. Black marketeering, loan sharking, and other questionable activities have proven lucrative for those able to keep Security well-paid in bribes and have enough muscle to carve out a decent living. A few legitimate business owners have done alright as well, such as skilled technicians, engineers, and others, without whom the 'hum' of the corporatist engines would dim.
Stability: High.
Red Sands is an industrial city, noted for its bustling commercial spaceport, refineries, and other businesses. Security is quite high, given the importance of Red Sands and Laranis II to the economic welfare of the entire system. The Laranis System Protectorate’s Security maintains a stern control over the city – and the entire planet – to ensure the continuation of commerce. Anyone attempting to establish trade unions, guilds, or speak against the policies and practices of the government is subject to immediate arrest and harsh punishment. Some just ‘disappear’. It is a working-class city, filed with spacers, miners, refinery workers, and service industry employees, and lacks the cleanliness, prosperity, and sense of openness found elsewhere in the system. Life in Red Sands is hard, and those who live here are even harder.
Freedom & Oppression: Protectorate Security is everywhere, and orders from above are clear: Business as usual, always. Day to day life is generally normal, but those agitating for better conditions, attempting to organize unions, or other forms of dissent and disruption are shut down fast and hard. There is a general heavy-handedness about the Security and their tactics here, and corruption, i.e. bribery of local personnel, is common. “Company Store” policies make the cost of living high, stretching struggling families and workers to their limits.
A black market exists here, offering loans and purchases of hard-to-get items and goods to the population. It is widely known – though little talked about – that this criminal industry is sanctioned by the Laranis System Protectorate member-corporations, each taking healthy percentages of the sales. The loan sharks and black marketeers are renowned for their heavy-handed collections and protection rackets, which are usually ‘conveniently’ overlooked by Protectorate Security.
Description: A crowded, dirty, and polluted place, filled with twisting alleys and thoroughfares, teeming with activity night and day. The refineries and processing plants churn out ton after ton of materials to be loaded on the docks and whisked away by waiting freighters. All-night diners and cantinas feed legions of hungry workers, and for those blowing off steam, a red-light district and many dive bars, betting and gaming parlors, and other seedy businesses wait to pick them clean of a week’s pay in mere hours. Drinking and drug use, particularly addiction to stims, is common, and rounding a corner to witness a fight over a dancer, a hand of sabacc, or some other grievance is a regular occurrence. Most everything is imported, and corporate-owned stores drain the accounts of workers for everyday necessities. Housing is poor, with whole families crowded into cramped apartments and only the very most successful enjoying any of the privileges of wealth and comfort found in other locations inside the Laranis System.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Protectorate Security is quick to maintain peace and order here. Well-funded and equipped, they patrol the settlements and mining areas frequently, and Security forces backed by orbital defenses, large warships, squadrons of interceptors, and ground troops guard against raiders and possible invasion.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The largest settlement on Laranis II, Red Sands was founded as a spaceport and refinery town in the days of the “Laranis Rush” following the Clone Wars, making it the oldest settlement in the entire Laranis System. It remains a bustling working class city to this day, a vivid snapshot of the those eke out a living on that world as workers, miners, spacers, et al. Little has changed throughout its rough-and-tumble past, except that it has merely grown in scope and size, making it the second-largest city in the system.
