Rein Stormsong is a commissioned Navy officer in the Zorn Defence Force; he is the youngest child of Markies Hadegar Stormsong, a Commonwealth of Zorn hereditary peer. Rein was born in 875 ABY; he was raised during the Government of the Grutter Norr Ryk in the state's custody at a paramilitary boarding school like most youth. Rein is characterised by his wicked intellect, cold logic and pragmatic outlook with an almost intuitive understanding of mechanical failure when examining manufactured products or the anatomy of fauna, taken with the pursuit of perfection in everything he did, despite not knowing the identity of his Father, Rein idolised the work of Hadegar Stormsong for his innovation with an ambition to complete his mandatory military service and work for Stormsong Arms. In 893 ABY, Rein finished his schooling and was assessed as suitable to pursue a career as an officer. He was allowed to study at a Navy-operated tertiary training academy, where he studied interstellar engineering with an interest in propulsion, power and architecture.
He connected with his relatives in the Stormsong family and became acquainted with Harre and Marieke; he also became acquainted with Hadegar, whose work he admired. Rein took to the family's library with a prodigious thirst for knowledge, pilfering the contents of the digital archives and physical pages for all manner of esoteric secrets. He spent time between his Naval academy studies and recreational pursuit of reading in the steely company of Hadegar. Rein was commissioned as an officer into the Grutter Norr Ryk's Navy. He pledged to Hadegar to seek employment with their family's business once his service obligation to the state was complete. In 896 ABY, Anneke, Hadegar's wife, a security officer of the Grutter Norr Ryk's Realm Defence Force, was murdered. Rein saw a heartbroken pain in Hadegar behind his high walls and iron mask. Rein, Hadegar, Marieke, and Harre were sitting at a table for dinner. Rein listened to Marieke round on Hadegar for punitive, harsh decisions he had made in the wake of Anneke's death.
Hadegar's knuckles wrapped across Marieke's cheek in a backhand that sent her hurtling out of her seat; Rein interrupted Hadegar's rage and stood between him and Marieke as Harre went to her side. Rein recalls locking eyes with the taller Hadegar, where he saw smouldering anger and rage, the rage of a man bereft of his wife. Hadegar breathed a sigh before walking away. Rein checked on Marieke and Harre before following Hadegar, only to find Hadegar with a single tear rolling down each cheek, slumped to his knees in a debris field of shattered glass, clasping the broken remains of a family portrait with all of them standing proudly beside one another. From this moment, Rein resolved to reconcile the injury to their family's home and mend the relationship between Hadegar and Marieke by earning favour with both.
