Cargo Podder "Go-Pod" Variation

Image Source: All images created by artist Ian McQue

Intent: To legitimize a design of aerial transportation created by Fennec for the Rekali clan peoples who shop on a tight budget with little regard to taste or appearances.

Development Thread: If necessary.

Manufacturer: Fennec and Samael Rekali, one at a time, piece by piece.

Model: “P-Pod” short for “Personal Podder” (one-seater), "M-Pod" or "Multi-Pod" (for the multi-seaters), and "Go-Pod" (for the cargo variation)

Affiliation: Rekali clan

Modularity: Situational. As all Podders are basically amalgamations of local ship/speeder/hovercraft parts, pieces, detritus and tech, many of them can be easily upgraded when newer, better tech parts become available. Should upgrades exceed intended purpose of this submission (using Restricted Materials, for example), a separate sub should/will be filed.

Production: Limited - Rekali Clan, select affiliates and allies

Material: Majority durasteel and other common materials used for ship and speeder crafting. Duct tape. Bailing twine. A hope and a wish. Podders are created using collected space detritus and elbow grease - ain’t nothing fancy about them.

Role: P-Pods are crafted as personal transports with varying purposes and extended uses for each individual ranging from smaller single-seaters to larger cargo transports.

Height: Between 2 and 3m typically, fins and antennae not included.

Length: Ranging from 5.6m for single and multi-seaters to 12m for cargo variant

Width: This range can vary greatly depending upon the base structure used to build the podder around. It is comparable to most average speeders at typically 2.1m wide, give or take.

Weight: Passenger Podders average around 1700 kilos. Cargo variants range between 1800 to 2100 kilos.

Minimum Crew: 1

Optimal Crew: 1

Propulsion: Repulsorlift

Top Speed: ~55kmph (~45kmph for cargo variants)

Armaments: Podders were not created for the purpose of battle. Customized Podders bearing offensive/defensive particulars will need separate subs of their own.

Squadron Count: N/A

Passenger Capacity: Varies depending on P-Pod type. Anywhere from 1 to approximately 10 human-sized occupants in the cargo variant. Multi-seaters usually max out at 6.

Cargo Capacity: Single and Multi-seaters all make use of trunk space somewhere within their design and have a cargo capacity comparable to a personal speeder. Cargo variants are comparable to cargo landspeeders.

Misc. Equipment: Most Podders are equipped with basic necessity tech one would find on a common low-grade speeder as it uses much of the same tech. The HUD allows the driver access to tech information on the Pod including fuel reserves, speed, altitude, pitch and yaw, as well as a localized radar field for navigational purposes. A rudimentary comm is built in that connects to a handful of local channels but is incapable of making off-planet communications (range is limited to about 10 miles). Lights and landing gear are standard - drop wheels for land transport are extra. Some Pods have floatation and water-navigation measurements added in if the buyer frequents waterways. Windows and hatches are typically an afterthought as finding those parts intact and in working order is unusual. It should be said that any Pod can be customized to suit the needs of the buyer/client, available tech to outfit these needs is another story...

Strengths:
  • Highly modifiable.
  • Highly affordable.
  • Easily upgradable.
  • Maneuverable in all directions - useful for tight and congested areas.
  • Generally hardy and reliable.
  • Ideal for local transport needs. Multi-seaters make great taxis.

Weaknesses:
  • Bulky, highly un-aerodynamic
  • Slow.
  • No defenses or offenses.
  • Rudimentary in its use. Standard Podder lacks any fancy bells or whistles.
  • Inefficient for long-distance travel.
  • Ugly.

Description: Clan Rekali is infamous for the exploration of the unknown, the expansion of its reach into areas widely considered dangerous and uninhabitable, and the ingenuity and hardiness of its people. Though a select few have enjoyed comforts and riches, a vast majority of those living within Clan territories have little in the way of wealth aside from their culture, community, and their beliefs. In their travels together Sam and Fen have seen a lot of things, one of which was the need for cheaper and alternative modes of transportation in the settlements of the Clan commons. Places like Yavin IV where sleek speeders were unaffordable and couldn’t hold up to the wear and tear of the citizens found many people stranded or facing dangerous hikes on-foot to get from place to place. With trade a major part of the livelihood of the clan but reliable transportation typically beyond their scope, Sam and Fen set out to rectify what was largely seen as an inconvenient situation.

It also happened to be an educational effort for Fen on Sam’s part. Teaching the girl values after she’d been harangued for stealing one-too-many-times. She was made to carry out her punishment through charity work - in knowing her abilities of working with tech, Fen was charged with fixing some old, antique speeders well past their prime. What started as a punishment soon grew into a continued hobby well after her sentence had been carried out. Sam began bringing in space flotsam from local feuds and battles, providing the girl with materials to build upon the old and worn out skeletons of speeders and pod racers that had seen far better days. The result: a line of hybridized transports Sam later dubbed “Podders” for the blend of Speeder and Pod Racer parts.

They weren’t pretty - far from it, and the first few to leave her lean-to workshop quickly fell apart after only a few weeks of use. Challenged by the work load of the local Clan people, Fen revised her strategy of sparingly replacing small pieces into complete reconstruction and fabrications of heavier, bulkier, stronger vehicles. One was never quite like the other, considering the materials she had to work with, but they soon became discernable in their patchwork design among the local populace. Fennec had no mind for money or wealth and Sam concerned himself only with covering material and living costs - creating a product that was vastly superior in durability and affordability to other options on the regional market. Podders appealed to the Rekali Clan people also in the curious manner in which they reflected their lifestyle: piecing together the remnants with hard work and ingenuity to forge a new path by whatever means necessary.

Fennec now makes Podders as a job, turning out 1 every few weeks dependant upon the amount of materials at her disposal. The locals purchase and make use of them for short-distance transport with the occasional custom job request for more specialized uses.
