Culture: Feared and respected throughout Mandalore and its moons, the nearly extinct Rekr was at one point hunted for its spikes as when sharpened or forged with Beskar made incredible spear points, blades and knives. As Mandalore grew so did the population of Rekr shrink. During the Yuuzhan Vong war however, the few that remained were used strategically by Boba Fett's secretive guriellla forces who would lead unwitting Vong into dens and places where Rekr were known to live as the massive canines were able to pierce through the Vong Crab armor and Amphistaffs of the Vong, leaving the warriors open to assault. During this time it was though that with enough force the teeth of the Rekr could be used as a weapon against Vong, but alas the Mandalorian myth only served to make the population even smaller as the teeth for whatever reason could never puncture the crab armor when not being used by a live Rekr.
At some point Clan Skirata changed its sigil to that of the Rekr, with one or two clan leaders having "tamed" the wild beasts to be their loyal mounts. However as these claims come from during the Gulag Plague their validity is questionable.
Technology level: N/A
General behavior: Small pack hunters, Rekr usually live in groups of two to 8, two parents who mate for life and their six pups. Until the pups reach an age and size where they can be useful in a hunt they stay in a den which can be found underground, in caves and in trees. Several times a year there are areas all around Mandalore where un-mated Rekr pilgrimage to in order to meet their mate at which point they leave the pack, eventually leaving just the mother and father. A pair might have two and rarely three liters of pups in their thirty year life span.
Rekr will hunt anything from small game like rabbits and strills to large game like boar, To Vhin, and even at times the Giant Shriek-Hawk, who in turn is the Rekr's biggest predator on Mandalore.
History: Discovered some time after the Taung had wiped out the Mythosaur it is believed that the Rekr and the Strill share a common ancestor due to the gliding flaps on their front legs. The giant cannies have faced extinction several times in their history, usually by Mandalorians. However, during the rule of Palpatines' empire they were hunted for their pelts as some imperials thought the giant hounds' spikes gave them a regal or respectable appearance in the eyes of the Mandalorians. If anything it drew a deeper wedge between the Imperial occupiers and the Mandalorians trapped on the world. Throughout history the dens and living spaces of these beasts were have been used in guerrilla rebellion-style tactics where small parties of Mandalorians would lead unwitting enemies into the path of these wild and hostile beasts.
During the Gulag plague they were seen as trophy beasts and some raider clans kept them chained in cages and claimed to have "tamed" them. Even clan Skirata had some that claimed to have tamed the beast with legends saying one or two Chiefs rode them into battle, however this is unlikely as there had up to that point been only a few tales and legends of great Mandalorians forcing the beasts to kneel to their dominance claim. Now the Rekr are endangered and a closely guarded and greatly regarded animal, especially by the Skirata Clan who use the beast's image as its clan symbol.
