Strengths & Weaknesses:
+ Light Infantry: The Rangers are a light infantry unit and as such are unencumbered by heavy weapons and therefore are able to move more quickly than most units
+ Anywhere, Anytime: The Rangers are trained in how to operate anywhere in the galaxy and are on call to be deployed within thirty-six hours of getting a call
+ Expert Riflemen: Each Ranger trains meticulously with their rifle to the point where they can hit a target at three hundred meters without problem
- Small Arms: The Rangers are only equipped with squad automatic weapons and rifles and therefore lack any arms to take down aircraft or armored vehicles
- Limited Numbers: The Rangers only consist of five regiments and therefore cannot be everywhere at one time
Rangers are one of only two special operation forces within the New Republic that you can volunteer for, the other being the Marine Advanced Recon Force, however this does not mean the Rangers are easy to get in to. In order to volunteer for Ranger School, the Rangers initial training program, an army soldier must first have an a physical fitness test exceeding at least eight-five percentile, a sharpshooter rifle range score, a sharpshooter pistol range score and no major discipline infractions, though this last requirement has been bended on special occasions.
Once all these requirements are met the Ranger candidates are shipped off to one of the three Range School locations on Carida. Ranger School is a six week training school. During the first week candidates are treated to a hellish experience of physical and mental exhaustion where candidates often run and march at least twenty kilometers a day, often lugging sixty or more kilograms of gear. This first week is where a typical Ranger class of five hundred is reduced to one hundred, an eighty percent attrition rate. From there the candidates spend the next two weeks learning more advanced tactics and maneuvering.
For the next two week candidates spend their time learning advanced first aid, demolitions, patrolling, hard target assault and seizure and defensive operations. Finally the sixth week is a massive field training exercise where the candidates, usually only sixty at this point, fight against a force of two hundred and fifty regular army soldiers. In the end usually only fifty candidates graduate and even then their training is not done.
After Ranger School candidates are sent to Extreme Environment Training School where for three weeks they training to fight in environments ranging from hot and humid jungles to freezing mountain ranges. Upon completion of this course candidates are finally considered to be full Rangers. From there some Rangers can even get further training by going to the Republic Army Sniper School and become Ranger snipers.
Besides their training the Rangers differ from regular army troops with the squad makeup. While a normal infantry squad is made up of ten troops, six riflemen, one heavy gunner, one designated marksman, one medic and one squad leader. A Ranger squad however consists of fourteen men, eight riflemen, two automatic rifle men, two designated marksmen, a medic and a squad leader. This allows a Ranger squad not only to put down more fire but more accurate fire as well.
In all the Republic Army Rangers are the tip of any conventional warfare that the Republic is engaged in.
