+ Unseen and Unheard: The main objective of the Marine ARF is to get in, gather information and get out before anyone knew they were there
+ Expert Riflemen: Just like their counterparts in the Rangers the ARF are expert sharpshooters
- No Heavy Weapons: In order to be fast and quiet the ARF takes nothing bigger than a rocket launcher into combat
- Small Numbers: The ARF uses small squad sizes to keep their footprint down and stay quiet
The ARF is the second of two special operations forces that you can volunteer for in the New Republic, the other being the Army Rangers, though just like the Rangers it is not easy to get in. To volunteer for the Reconnaissance Course, the ARF's equivalent to Ranger School, one must first have a few prerequisites. Unlike the Rangers the ARF requires volunteers to have a ninety percentile on their physical fitness test, this is due to the fact that working as a member of the ARF is much more taxing than as a ranger. Next volunteers must qualifying as an expert rifle range score and at least a sharpshooter pistol range score, this being because the Republic Marine Corps prides itself on its riflemen. Like the Rangers as well any who wish to join the ARF must have no major disciplinary infractions though the Marine Corps has been more accepting than the Army when it comes to this.
Once these requirements are met the candidates are sent to one of two Reconnaissance Course locations of Carida. Like Ranger School the Reconnaissance Course lasts six weeks though the content of those six weeks is much different. The only similarity to Ranger School is the first week where the candidates undergo mental and physical stresses designed to weed out the weak though the Marines are held to a much higher standard when it comes to their forced marches and often carry more weight. Like Ranger School the first week, dubbed 'Hell Week' by its participants, tends to cut the class down by at least eighty percent.
After Hell Week the candidates spend the next two weeks learning reconnaissance doctrines, concepts, techniques and theories to the point of near instant memorization and are often tested on this memorization in live fire situations. After this they spend their fourth week at Recon Course learning how to gather intelligence both physically and digitally and at this point the class size is cut down by another ten percent. Their final week is spent during a field exercise where the remaining candidates are split up into even teams and participate in a field exercise similar to the end of Ranger School but suited towards the ARF's typical mission.
After the candidates finish the Reconnaissance Course the candidates also go to Extreme Environment Training School and training alongside the Rangers so they can fight and do reconnaissance in the most extreme environments, though this isn't where the training for the ARF's stops. Unlike the Rangers the ARF requires all of its members to become qualified snipers and therefore must attend the Marine Corps Scout/Sniper School before they are considered Advanced Reconnaissance Marines.
Just like the Rangers the ARF squad size differs from the normal squad size though unlike the Rangers the ARF squad size is smaller due to their more stealthy approach. An ARF squad consists of six members. A squad leader, a demolitions expert/grenadier, a sniper, a automatic rifleman, a communications expert and a medic. This small size not only gives an ARF squad a small size but gives them the necessary tools to complete any mission.
In all with their training and their equipment the ARF is one of the best Reconnaissance units in the entire galaxy.
