Question Revival/Sequel of characters long gone?

I was looking at threads and saw a old character that looked very interesting. The writer disappeared in 2014 however. (Hope they are doing well.)

But that got me thinking. Has anyone ever revived one from a long lost writer? Or used a character that made a connection with a long lost writer's character? Could be that done, or would that be rather rude?

I can't speak for everyone, but I consider a character to be the property of the writer. So, at least as far as picking up someone's forgotten characters, it just isn't something I would feel is right to do.
