The founding member systems established one of the earliest initiatives of the Rimward Trade League as two separate organizations- the Rescue Service and Ranger Corps. The Ranger Corps handled planetary enforcement of League laws while the Rescue Service handled the interstellar law enforcement and search and rescue. But with the 900ABY Reforms, the two were consolidated into the Rimward Ranger Service, simplifying the logistics and administrative aspects of the Service and increasing the effectiveness of cross-jurisdiction investigations. As a result, the Ranger Service has focused more on crimes that cannot be easily enforced by local law enforcement- including interstellar safety regulations, organized crime, political corruption, piracy, and widescale labor rights violations. Rescue Stations and Rescue Ships serve as mobile bases of operations, both for S&R and long-term investigations.
A Commandant, appointed by the League Council, still acts as the head of the entire Ranger Service, but the other two chains of commands have been simplified and integrated. The Ranger Corps companies were dispersed among the Rescue Stations to act as smaller investigatory and enforcement units. At the same time, the Rescue Service was reorganized into the more egalitarian style of the Rangers, and all were given the title of Ranger. The combined service now operates under the overall organization of Command, Engineering, Medical, Rescue, Tactical, and Enforcement (combining investigatory and legal elements). Members are cross-trained between ground and space operating elements, giving them the flexibility to act as both, but most generally choose to specialize in one or the other. Investigatory Rangers are often stationed in small teams about Ranger Rescue vessels and Rescue personnel are always included in Enforcement detachments.
With the military responsibility mostly removed from the Ranger Service and given to the Joint Service Command, the Service could focus more efficiently on its missions of search & rescue, law enforcement, and maintenance of deep space infrastructure with responsibility for patrolling and maintaining hyperlanes and convoy routes to enforce safety regulations, perform emergency vessel repair, as well as rescue operations. They are also one of the more common elements sent by the League Council, under the Admiralty Courts, to explore new systems, chart new hyperlanes, and act as conflict mediators on the Council's behalf, either within League disputes or between foreign systems that request neutral mediation.
