  • A Star's Light Endures - One does not snuff out a star: the Imperium desired a ship capable of weathering the sustained barrage of enemy vessels at range and in close-proximity. A testament to their unwavering resolve to finish what they began. In order to get into position for an effective broadside, this was a simple necessity in the design and construction of the ship.
  • A Star's Wrath Scorches - A single star contains more explosive power than an entire fleet: this is the philosophy Aestus applied to the Aether. While the main guns may seem fewer in number, they make up for it in firepower. The ship was designed for a nose-to-nose slug out (broadside) of a hostile capital vessel. It isn't flashy, but it gets the job done.
  • A Star Sustains Life - An on-board manufacturing plant allows the Aether to replenish its ordinance without relying on external facilities. Replacement parts, slugs, missiles, and replacement fighters are the most common needs for a 'deep space' vessel.

  • A Blue Supergiant - The Aether is undeniably a vessel built for war. Despite its size it does not have the amenities to support planetary evacuations, facilities to treat entire camps of diseased or ailing lifeforms, nor the labs to research and develop nigh inconceivable cures or technologies.
  • A Red Supergiant - Designed to crush its enemies with overwhelming effect, the Aether's true strength is only found when it saddles up next to its foe and rains down hellfire. This requires wading smack into the middle of the enemy's weapon range, and while designed to weather such barrages it does carry certain risk most avoid by staying as far away as possible. Such tactics work best on similarly sized vessels or those not known for their speed.
  • A Red Giant - Its manufacturing plant still requires materials, and not everything can be recycled or reused (or recovered). Sometimes they'll still need to barter, buy, or commandeer what is needed -- especially consumables -- to keep the ship functional.

The Astrorum Imperium commissioned The Constellation Aestus, their chief manufacturing body, to build a battlecruiser capable of leaving their secluded region of space and venturing into the wider, chaotic galaxy. Its mission would be to determine if external forces were supporting Imperium enemies; and such forces existed to identify and destroy them -- or at least cripple their ability or interest in ferrying material or resources to those hostile to the Imperium. As it would be a long trip, far from home they wanted a ship able to sustain and defend itself. It was also believed that the fewer ships sent, the less attention they would attract from the wider galactic community and the fewer resources pulled from the Imperium's home defense.

As the flag bearer away from the Imperium, the Aether was constructed to endure the rigors of battle; to boldly confront its enemies and plow through their broken ruin. Of course, some hoped that would be few and far between as the mission to stymie those purportedly supporting hostile factions was of chief concern -- not one ship waging war on the galaxy all on its own. Others recognized the dangers of sending a vessel so far from home, and simply sought to ensure it would return.

Undeniably, the Aether is a military vessel and one designed for combat. No matter how many redundant systems it has, it is not built for refugees to clog its corridors or for housing the galaxy's greatest minds. It can to an extent, in a pinch, fulfill other roles if suitable personnel and resources are found, but it was sent out into the galaxy to seek and destroy not win awards for greatest humanitarian contribution.[/FONT]
