Intent: To provide a heavy long-range ion cannon
Development Thread: If necessary
Manufacturer: Ringovinda Systems
Model: Scarif heavy long-range ion cannon
Affiliation: Open market
Modularity: Can choose whether to have one, two or three tubes in a turret: each tube is worth 12 turbolasers
Production: Mass-Produced.
Material: Alusteel turret, long-range ion cannon components
Classification: heavy long-range ion cannon
Size: Ship-Mounted
Length: 15 meters
Weight: 55 tons (single-tube turret; add 15 tons per tube in same turret)
Ammunition Type: Power reactor
Ammunition Capacity: Long-range turbolaser standard
Effective Range: Long-range turbolaser standard
Rate of Fire: Long-range turbolaser standard
Strengths:
- Common components with many heavy long-range turbolaser batteries (in maintenance terms, just more of the same for heavy long-range turbolaser users)
- Compatible with common long-range turbolaser targeting computers
- Can adjust its firepower in accordance to the available power onboard the ship
- Effective against shields and systems (more than a turbolaser)
Weaknesses:
- High power drain
- Prone to overheating if fired too often in a short period of time
- Difficult to hit small craft (fighters, bombers) with it
- Less effective beyond standard turbolaser range
- Ineffective against hulls
Special Features: None
Description: The Scarif is a long-range version of its predecessor, the Bulkhunter. It is, as a result, more compact than a standard heavy ion cannon turret. Like its predecessor, it features seven power settings, each of which is twice as powerful as the previous one, with the end result that the highest power setting can drain the same amount of power as 18 standard ion cannons. Due to the added components required to achieve long-range, the Scarif is heavier, especially for the components on the mount ship, and also results in an increased power drain compared to the normal-ranged turbolaser. Consequently it can be used to target ships of varying sizes in a variety of combat situations, in the sense of being able to make the most energy-efficient ways to engage capital ships. Because of the high power drain of the Scarif, it is recommended not to place more than one tube for each 100 meters of length. Also, because it is compatible with most existing targeting computers capable of handling long-range weapons, transition to a Scarif will be seamless for most gunners. It is otherwise rather vanilla in terms of maintenance or functionality compared to other heavy long-range ion cannons. Its turret has suboptimal traverse or depression speeds and hence is not ideal for defense against small craft.
