Much had been left behind on Coruscant when Ares chose to leave. His home was in ruins, and had his parents not evacuated when they did, they would be dead. His sister made it out with them as well, but that was not the case for many that he had fought beside. The Sith were to blame. They were a plague to the galaxy, searching for any opportunity to gain power and keep it. As long as they were strong, as long as the machine which fed them was working, the galaxy was not a safe place for anyone.

Ares had taken up the personal responsibility to weaken them. It was a fool's errand, and he knew it, but his soul would not rest until they paid for all the lives that had been snuffed out in their name. His once soft and moldable personality was cold and rigid. Are was a killer and a soldier with one mission, revenge. That would be accomplished anyway possible.

The mercenary had taken odd jobs, ones that would have made him question his morals if they still existed, in order to procure enough credits to supply himself with a ship and armor that would allow him to move about as he wished. What he truly needed was a benefactor, one that would ensure that he no longer had to take jobs that kept him away from the real target, like the job he was on now.

Ares had been hired by an antiquities dealer to make his way into Ankorat Prison and steal one of the statues that sat in the center of the main yard. Apparently the figure was of some well known outlaw that would fetch a high price at auction, a price that Ares was guaranteed a fifteen percent cut from. The proposed opening bid was enough to get him to agree to it, and the fact the man left out a very important detail. Ankorat Prison was still occupied, and it was not normal criminals.

The location itself was classified, and how this dealer knew where it was was certainly a mystery. Ares had not questioned him though, because it seemed like a fruitless effort. He should have. Failed science experiments, if you could call them that, occupied near every cell of the prison. There were no guards, which Ares found highly disturbing. The only thing of note was the smell, which he was thankful for the filtration system on his helmet, and the rock and sand covered building. This was a mistake, but he had already agreed to the job.

His brain told him to leave, but his gut told him to press on. There was something about that, whenever Ares listened to his gut it was usually important. He could not ignore the sense that there was something more to this mission, so he pressed ahead.

The main yard was in the center of the prison, and the map pulled up on his HUD made it pretty clear that the building fit the schematics he had been given. That only raised more questions about this client. The only thing that did not match was the wall, or door, blocking his way. Sounds of blaster fire, creatures growling and roaring, and humans screaming were all he could hear from the otherside. Ares attached enough explosives to make a hole bigger than was necessary. Someone needed help, and Ares wasn't going to sit by and let anyone suffer.

Maybe his morals were not entirely dead.

They'd been in the depths of this prison for so long Penny had almost forgotten what real light looked like. Everything was tinged in a million different greens so bright they made her head spin. She wasn't cut out for missions like this. This was supposed to be something the team dealt with, up to a point anyway. Usually these things took a week or so to get sorted. They'd go in to clear out any harmful threats, disarm any security features, make sure the area is clear and locate the anomaly. Then and only then would Penny would show up, but recently they'd been making a habit out of taking her along for the ride. The project was growing steadily and the more they grew the more the things they were chasing seemed to grow too. Penny didn't know whether the two correlated exactly but it was very ironic.

The sound of ten pairs of heavy boots crunching through the poorly tiled corridors happened to be loud enough to disturb the rows and rows of "prisoners" locked in their cells. The team spent the first hour tensely walking through the endless rows of tiny prisons, jumping at every noise and threatening to shoot anything that moved. Penny on the other hand strode through the narrow corridor with a confidence unmatched. The grim faces peering out through the thick steel bars barely phased her, after all they had all been sentient once. Some of them might have even been human, but you could hardly tell anymore. A large portion had horrible greying skin that looked like it had been gouged out by something sharp, some had missing limbs and some had extra ones. Nearly all of them made a low, unnerving moan that echoed off the bare stone walls that surrounded them.

So far the entire place had been a nightmare, Penny could practically see the reams and reams of paperwork on her desk that the prison would create. Eventually the team would return and round up all the science experiments and either fix them or eliminate them. If she was honest they should have started rounding up all the science experiments they moment they walked through the door, but they had a different goal for this particular mission. When she'd first read up on the anomaly they were investigating Penny had a hard time believing she was truly needed but the further the went the more she could understand. Eventually the anomaly would be named OMK-202 but for now the team had nicknamed it "The Alchemist" and it was very fitting.

It hadn't taken very long to find out exactly where he was. The thing emitted a powerful signature that could be detected on almost every piece of equipment they had brought along. Penny couldn't exactly say why this was when she was asked but the puzzle intrigued her beyond compare. There had been a few hiccups with some old security systems that nearly had someone's head off but the prison yard was just ahead of them. A small explosion blasted the lock out, making the door swing on its rusty hinges with a long, loud squeak. By this point Penny had abandoned the heavy helmet she'd been force to wear for the duration of their trip. Something, or rather someone, was spreading a thick fog tinted a ghostly green around the courtyard that made it near impossible to see.

Penny stepped through the door, not paying any attention to the warnings being hissed out at her. Through the fog she could just make out tall cylindrical glass tubes containing a gooey looking liquid that suspended a few of the experiments in mid-air. The team filtered in slowly behind her, going through their usual checks for entering a new area and setting up the equipment in a suitable place. Penny was loathed to waste so much time simply standing about, which is the majority of the reason why they were all taking cover around the edges of the prison yard with blasters going off in every direction. The moment she had decided to get a closer look at the tanks the fog had been shifted by an aggressive wind that threw people, papers, books and vials all around the yard. In the center of the courtyard the fog revealed the twisted form of a man that looked remarkably similar to his experiments save for his green tinged skin. Of course this had triggered the team and, without thinking, they had opened fire on the source of the wind.

'FOR KRIFF SAKE, STOP BEING TRIGGER HAPPY IDIOTS, I CAN'T THINK.'

Penny had chosen a rather large piece of crumbled ceiling to duck behind, both hands pressed to her ears in an attempt to protect them from the violent outburst. Nothing the team threw at the ghostly entity in the center of the yard seemed to work, it simply absorbed the blaster bolts. The more they fired the stronger the presence seemed to grow, all around Penny the machines were whirring madly filling the area with violent high pitched beeping and screeching. Her mind was reeling, desperately trying to come up with a solution that didn't include completely destroying one of their first anomalies. Eventually the firing died down and the hiss of someone talking in her earpiece overtook her thoughts.

'No, you very clearly can't kill it. You expected to be able to kill a ghost with weapons? No, you've just ticked it off instead. Good job.'

Her eyes rolled up toward the ceiling, though nobody could exactly see her right now. Penny lent forward to gather the readings from the equipment, her quick eyes scanning over a hundred different numbers and letters. The ghost in the middle of the room wasn't exactly one for waiting though. A deep growl filled the now quiet area, followed by a distinctive click that sounded extremely like locks being opened. Lumbering in slowly were the experiments they'd chosen to leave behind in their cells, their angry eyes filled to the brim with an animistic desire to attack anything with a heart beat. Penny swallowed a lump in her throat and took a step backward as four of them began to surround her. Shakily, she reached for the blaster attached to her hip...

BOOM!

Her hands went instantly to her eyes to protect them from the shrapnel that cut through the air with the suddenness of the explosion. Through the settling dust she could make out the shape of someone that wasn't exactly supposed to be there, but she was so incredibly happy to see them. She had no confidence in her ability to shoot the experiments lumbering toward her. Not because she had a problem with killing them but because she was almost guaranteed to miss and hit the expensive machinery surrounding her.

The explosion was a bit bigger than what Ares had anticipated, and the gas which mixed with dust caught him off guard. SOOOOOO this was weird. Ares had trained for a lot, and he had seen the Sith do some crazy stuff, but this was by far the weirdest thing ever. There was little time to take it in because his eyes fell right on a woman pinned down by four different creatures, experiments, whatever these things were. The antiquities dealer was not paying enough for this.

Blaster first was the only way to go this time. Set to kill, the mercenary charged ahead and shot the closest thing in the back of the head. Whatever was inside it splattered about but at least he knew it was dead. The next shot passed through the heart of the second creature, and the third was taken out the same way. Letting the blaster drop, the fourth creature had turned by this point to see what was going on. Charging at Ares, he attempted to tackle the soldier, but Ares ducked under the attempt, and turned on his heels. Grabbing the thing by its head, he broke the creatures neck in a show of brute strength and expert killing skill. Right maybe not expert as the target was pretty easy, but there was still no amount of time.

Ares ducked himself to the cover the woman had found. It was okay, but not the best.

<<< "This way," >>> he said as he took the woman's hand and left her little choice. Ares pulled her close as his other hand rose, gripping his side arm and shooting the oncoming creature as they moved downed stone pillar that allowed them to put their back against a wall. <<< "There now we don't have to worry about watching our backs." >>>

Ares looked at the source of the gas, and saw the ghost. Okay this was more than weird it was paranormal, and Ares was not an expert on any of this. What the hell had this crew unleashed, and why were they trying to kill a ghost. There was some stereotypical brute troops on this squad, and Ares was already thinking the woman was the brains of this whole team. Between what he saw, and the fact she nearly froze when the four creatures were heading her way, Ares made an educated guess.

Peeking over the stone pillar, Ares made sure that the woman was keeping her head down. Two more creatures were coming, one on the left and one on the right. Two shots, two more kills, and then Ares decided he was going to take charge. <<< "Why don't you all focus on getting these things back in their cages huh? If you can't just kill them all." >>> One way or the other they were going to get out of this place. Ares sighed as he ducked back down.

<<< "So what the hell is this? Tell me that you have a plan, and tell me what we are going to do about that!?" >>>

Ares thumb jutted out at the ghost, and for the first time he took the moment to look the woman in the eyes. They were very green, mesmerizingly so.

When the finally cleared Penny could see her "rescuer" standing clearly in the jagged hole he'd made with an explosion. She didn't have much time to look at him though, especially not with the horrifying experiments lumbering closer by the second. Penny wasn't sure what would happen if they got a hold of her but she was damn sure it wouldn't be pretty. Another blaster sounded out over the din of the thirty that were already firing, though this time it was closer than she had expected. Penny nearly jumped out of her skin at the sudden noise, raising her arms again to protect herself from anything flying her way. It was fortunate that she did because blood, brain and guts were sprayed out and covered most of her midnight colored armor in a foul smelling mist of liquid and body matter.

Around the third blaster shot Penny decided to pull her arms away from her eyes and have a look at what was going on. Three of the things were slumped over onto the floor, grisly bluey green blood pooling around the holes the blaster made in their gruesome bodies. She almost squealed when the fourth charged at her mysterious savior, but he was clearly well practiced in the art of shooting. In a matter of minutes the horrifying sound of bone breaking overshadowed the blaster bolts that pinged off the stone walls, the last attacker was sinking to its knees, head hanging limply off it's neck. Penny's jaw had been partly open for the short moment she'd been watching this stranger.

She barely had time to react when he slipped behind the broken piece of ceiling she'd taken cover behind, never mind when his hand found hers and he dragged her away. She was just about to open her mouth to scold him for grabbing her in such a way when she noticed the pillar they'd taken refuge behind. Her jaw dropped slightly as she reached up to run a finger over the thousands of symbols chiseled into the stone. The stranger was saying something but Penny was completely invested in her new discovery.

'Shut up for a minute...'

Penny's eyes scanned over them quickly, taking in whatever she could while another two rounds were fired off into the mutant attackers. To be completely honest she didn't even notice them, her focus and attention were placed entirely on the strange symbols decorating the entire length of the pillar. Her lips moved almost imperceptibly as she translated them at a rapid speed. The results were more than interesting enough for her to say them aloud as she went along.

'Force, blah, blah, blah... ascent to power... gene splicing?!'

If it weren't for Ares barking out an order to her crew Penny would have been looking at the glyphs forever. As it was his voice came loud and clear through her ear piece, which drew her away from the inscriptions. She could tell the moment he spoke that her crew were entirely unsure about following his orders, she could hear the mumbling concern reverberating inside her skull as thirty voices spoke out against the stranger. Penny tutted and popped her head over the pillar for the briefest of moments, making a hand signal to the team. This simple action seemed to settle the ruckus instantly.

'What this is is none of your damn business, but since you're here you can lend us a hand. That thing over there is a Sith. Been dabbling in a little bit of alchemy that probably should have never seen the light of day.' Penny pointed to the pillar, motioning to a few of the symbols in particular as she spoke. 'These symbols here. They're Krath referencing scripts. He's been messing with stuff far to powerful for anyone to comprehend, never mind try. You can see it's gone well for him. He must be drawing his power from somewhere. We just have to find out where...'

Well, this woman seemed to have a grateful attitude, and if it wasn't clear, Ares thoughts were going to deep levels of sarcasm. The fact he had pretty much saved her ass was the last thing on her mind as he eyes seemed to jump right to the runes on the pillar. Great, he saved a nerd, not only was she the brains of the operation, she was going to be the only one that was going to be able to figure out how to stop this thing. Yup, when he delivered the stature the antiquities dealer was after, he was also demanding at least double the original offered price. There was no way the price had covered hazard pay, or running into ghosts pay.

She barked at him shut up, and he turned his head toward her for a brief second, only long enough to seem a bit stunned.

<<< "Take the earpiece out then, because the chatter is gonna only get worse as we try to mobilize a defense." >>>

Maybe she was used to people taking her direct and blunt approach, but Ares was in the middle of a hostile situation, and no one was leading. He liked his life, had a mission to do, so he was going to take charge and make sure they all got out of there. At this rate, it wasn't because the team was nice, it was because his own neck was on the line. The woman may have been pretty but her tongue and personality was sharp and prickly was she was beautiful. Clearly she was the type that was used to getting whatever she wanted. Ares never lasted long around those types because he wasn't the kind of guy to roll over and just give in. That was going to come into play very quickly if they were getting out of this alive.

The words force and gene splicing had gotten his attention though. While the rest of the team finally seemed to be getting their act together in dealing with the experiments, Ares kept the woman safe. Apparently she had stumbled onto something with those runes, and their way out of this alive was likely in what she was reading. Such was life. It was always the smart ones saving the day, and the soldiers taking the credit for it. Being a mercenary allowed Ares to be both and take credit for his own hard work.

<<< "None of my damn business," >>> he said as three more creatures came into range of his weapon. Two shots to two heads and the third to the heart. At this rate Ares was simply going for kill shots. The side arm was shoved back into its holster with a bit of frustrated force. <<< "Look lady... I'm here because I was paid to nab a statue for an antiques dealer that deals in the rare to find things. I just happened to stumble into this mess, and you're alive because of it. For all I can tell your team was too confused and too busy dropping releasing the contents of their bowels into their pants to be of any use to you. So, right now, this is my damn business. Keeping you alive keeps us all alive. Like it or not, you just became the only business that matters to me." >>>

Sith runes... of course they were Sith runes. Ares shook his head. He eyed the ghost once more, and began to look around the room. The stature that he was after seemed untouched in the center of the room. Ares pulled out his datapad just to be sure, but he was rather intrigued by the likeness. Why it hadn't connected in his mind until Penny mentioned the Krath, maybe it was because of the action. The woman was worth every bit of his effort at the moment.

<<< "Is it just me or does that statue look like Aleema and Satal Keto?" >>> Yes, Ares knew his history, especially anything relating to the Sith. His mission was to seem them powerless in his lifetime, a feat he didn't think possible, but what great cause was easy? Hopefully the little tidbit, and showing that he was not just a mindless gun for hire, would earn him some respect in the moment. <<< "Don't ghosts like that tie themselves to an artifact of theirs... like a holocron, or a statue... you know... just saying..." >>>

Penny's hand flapped aggressively in front of the strangers face, her way of impolitely telling him to can it once again. 'I'm not talking to them, I'm talking to you. Them I'm used to.' A snicker came through loud and clear on the ear piece, which elicited a soft tut from the back of Penny's mouth. Ordinarily she would have chastised her team, but her mind was elsewhere as she continued to flick her shocking green eyes over the ancient text. As far as she was concerned the situation was under control, though she was completely oblivious to the fact that it was Ares who had made it so. After another quick glance at the inscriptions Penny lent back and let out a soft sigh. Two fingers came up to smooth out her dark brows, a sign that she was thinking deeply. When Ares spoke she snapped her head up and turned to look at him without any warning, entirely unaware of the ongoing carnage around them. She wasn't angry but an inexplicable fire burned behind her silver-green eyes. Who the hell was this stranger, and why did he think he could talk to her in such a manner? 'Okay, listen up. I don't know how you are or who you think you are and how you even found this place but this is my operation. Despite what you might think, we have everything entirely under control. My team has been in this situation before. You, however? You're new fish. You wouldn't have a clue what was going on even if I sat here and explained it to you right this very minute.'

Penny was brutal, her sharp words cut through the high pitched pings the blasters made as they fired. 'I suppose you aren't aware that relic hunting is illegal in this sector? Especially if you're selling it to an antiques dealer who should know better. I'm highly tempted to call it in and have my team arrest you right this minute. But for now, you're useful. If you continue to be so we may even let you leave with your memories in tact and criminal record free. But make no mistake. I'm in charge here. If I say hide you hide, if I say go you go, if I say jump you say how high.' She gave him a reproachful glare but there wasn't a hint of sarcasm in her tone. They were already playing a dangerous game before they had even begun the mission and now she knew exactly what they were up against, plus the new addition to the group, the odds of something going wrong had multiplied dramatically.

Penny didn't wait for a reply. She simply turned to face the madness, pressing her back to the rune covered pillar they were using as cover. 'This apparition is nasty. Capable of force moves I'm sure nobody has documented in years, never mind attempted.' Her voice rose in pitch, overtaken with the excitement that of discovering something entirely new. It was the first time in the entire mission that her tone held anything other than annoyance and irritation. It almost seemed as if her body were vibrating with the revelation that this... thing, whatever it was, was probably the most powerful being anyone had come across in a long while. She fumbled around in the numerous pockets of the skintight, jet black armour. 'If we could just control it for a while maybe I cou-...' All of a sudden one of the pillars holding up the balcony that stretched around the courtyard exploded out into a million sharp shards of stone and rock. Penny couldn't help the screech that escaped her throat and drowned out the rest of her sentence. Without the support of the pillar the balcony crumbled, crashing to the ground with a deafening boom.

In an instant her commanding voice echoed through the commlink. A quick headcount was all it took to reassure her that none of the team had been crushed by the balcony or sliced to shreds by the explosive debris. 'Hooly kriff. Okay, scratch that. We need to stop this thing. Now.' Penny risked a glance over the top of the pillar to look at the ghostly figure. The green glow shone brightly into the whites of her eyes, making her silver-green pupils disappear entirely into the ghoulish reflection. Excitement filler them to the brim, and once she finally spoke she did so in a flurry. 'Shatterpoint. It used shatterpoint.' Her slim body slipped down behind the pillar once again and, if you were looking close enough, she had a thin smile on her face. 'Oh it's clever. So, so clever. The last person to use shatterpoint is long gone, practically dust by now. The referencing scripts must have given him the know how but...' Ares spoke, interrupting her train of thought for the third time that day. With a huff she lifted herself up and turned her head to focus on whatever he was pointing at. She squealed, high and long.

'YES! Yes, yes, yes.' She spoke with such pleasure in her voice that a passer by might have assumed she was up to no good. 'It's bloody brilliant! Why didn't I see it before? That's what the writings meant by a vessel. Not the apparition itself but the thing that's safe guarding its life force.' Once again she slipped behind the relative safety of the pillar, mumbling something under her breath as she did. There was a chance they could trap the spirit inside of the statue for further testing, but there was no way to be sure without having a closer look at it. She could always pull it up on the holonet but there was no telling what the Sith had done to it. Any number of runes could have been transcribed into the white marble stone. A grumble and a groan later Penny turned to Ares, for once her tone was soft, inquisitive and imploring as a pose to critical and harsh. 'We can either entirely destroy it right here right now, which would benefit precisely nobody including yourself. Or...' At this point she paused, hoping Ares would fill in the blanks, but just in case... 'You can help us distract it so I can get closer and see what there is to be done.'

She was quite snippy. These brainiac types and not wanting to be interrupted, Ares couldn't stand it sometimes. Had she not listened to a word he said about being the reason she was alive? Of course she hadn't, the woman was too busy studying the runes while he ensured her strike team didn't get killed. There was going to be no thanks, he already knew that, and his chances of actually doing the thing he was there to do were long gone out the window. Ares had walked into a suicide mission without even knowing it, and if he got all of them out alive, he was going to be looking for safer ways to earn credits.

The problem with that was the adrenaline. Ares had missed this... and this woman only reminded him of a pissed off drill instructor. He was a born and fashioned soldier, and this was his true calling. Ares knew it.

"I wouldn't understand? Try me sister... You have a unit of disorganized and incompetent soldiers that are supposed to be protecting you from Mr. Glowy hands there who released every creature held in this prison. You are trying to figure out how to stop him, while I am ensuring that most of your men, and especially you, do not die. Does that pretty much sum up the situation?"

Ares rolled his eyes as he turned to fire off another two shots. He had to conserve his energy pack because looking at his weapon and those carried by the other men, his tech was not compatible. One thing he did pick up on was that whoever was bankrolling the doctor had to be wealthy. The gear and the tech was far superior to anything he could get his hands on.

The good doctor could not stop talking. She thought out loud. Ares just shrugged at the mention of Shatterpoint. He had no idea what she was going on about. Sure he knew about the force, but that was all he knew. His research for things like this never focused on what these things could do, just how to neutralize his enemy. That was why he pointed out the statue. He knew if they could destroy the statue they could get out alive. The option wasn't his though, nor his call.

She gave him a choice, destroy it or distract the ghost. That was not much of a choice because if he didn't get the statue, he didn't get his credits. After all of this, yeah, he needed to get paid. There was only one option, and this woman already knew it.

Ares sighed in protest as he leaped over the pillar they were hiding behind.

"Hey there you ugly excuse for a ghost... why don't you try picking on someone that can actually put up a fight."

How, Ares didn't know, but the plan would come to him while he bought time for the doctor to figure it out. In the meantime, he had to dodge falling debris and keep the ghost from focusing on Penny.

Penny's dark brows furrowed and, for a brief moment, she completely forgot the ghostly apparition they were faced with. Her head turned, almost comically slow, toward the stranger that had invited himself into the group. 'My team is neither disorganised or incompetent, we were just caught by surprise. I'm sure you would be just as perplexed if you were attacked by an un-dead force ghost. Though I have no idea why I'm bothering explaining myself to you. Not only are you a freely admitted criminal but the only reason your heart is still beating right now is because I said so. I'd keep the lip to a minimum.' For the first time since the stranger arrived Penny dragged her eyes over his rugged face, drinking in every line on cheeks, every blemish on his pale skin. She supposed he was handsome enough to look at, but that was his only redeeming feature thus far in their meeting. The bridge of her nose crinkled slightly as she listened to his rambling explanation of the situation.

'It's much, much more complicated than that. Too complicated to explain in such a brief amount of time. Beside, I'm not sure you have the ability to grasp it all, never mind the fact that the information is strictly confidential.' That was the end of the matter, as far as Penny was concerned. By the time the last word had left her lips she had moved to position herself at the other side of the broken pillar. Penny was not the physically fit type. She was a healthy weight and she watched what she ate but she much preferred to spend her time behind a desk designing weapons instead of firing them. A barely audible sigh left her lips as she prepared for the events that would follow in the next few minutes. Before she could even recognise what was going on Ares' voice sounded out in her mind. He was causing the distraction they so desperately needed to win this fight.

It happened in minutes. Penny found her legs forcing themselves to move of their own accord. They were heading for the statue. It wasn't long before she found herself moving swiftly past the ghostly apparition. A wave of a cold, unfeeling sensation caressed her skin as she got closer. It was almost as if someone had turned on a cooling system and had it aimed directly at her. Power like this was almost unheard of in the Galaxy. 'I'm going for the vessel!' Penny shouted as loud as she could over the racket of the furious ghost and the unnerved grumbles of the team. Hopefully whatever his name was would actually be able to do the only job she had given him. The statue was within reaching distance. Despite her lack of ability to feel the force Penny could feel something rolling off the statue. It was almost as tangible as the weapon in her hand or the armour on her body. It felt like the powerful force was ripping through her organs with little to no care to how delicate they were. Whatever energy the statue was emitting was complicated beyond any words Penny was familiar with.

Her fingers grazed the smooth metal statue, she was lucky that it only happened to be a small statue a little bigger than her hand. The instant her skin touched it her hairs stood on end. Despite the horrifyingly cold pain that shot through her forearms, Penny wasn't letting go of the statue now she had hold of it. Unfortunately for her, the ghost wasn't as stupid as they had originally expected. The thing spun round violently mid-air to face the thief that had dared touch the source of all it's power. The floor shook, the stone walls around them vibrated, the creature let out an ear-piercing screech. What followed was a bright flash of blue light that exploded into a thousand different shades of colour the minute it hit the wall. The thing roared in dismay and turned again to face a now fleeing Penny. Orb after orb made it's way through the air. Penny darted and dodged, this way and that way. There was no way she could keep up this pace. Sooner or later one of the dangerously bright blue orbs would smack into her. Kriff knows what would happen then. If she had to take a guess Penny would have betted on the fact that she would end up in a million pieces, just like the pillars that surrounded the team.

She spoke up, panic plainly obvious in her voice even if she was out of breath. 'I'm going to need a minute to have a look at this thing!' Hopefully Ares and the others would recognise that without a break in the attack Penny could do nothing but run. The statue wasn't going to self-destruct any time soon and she was almost certain simply smashing it would do no good.

"More complicated than that!? Sweetheat, that is exactly what is happening here. Keep telling yourself whatever you need to think you're superior to me... but right now, you need my help, so try not to bite the hand that's feeding you otherwise you might this one bites back..."

It was a warning for sure. This woman seemed to be spending more energy in trying to insult him and spurn his help than she actually was spending in trying to get them out of the situation they were in. Had simplified the situation, sure, but usually the simple observation was also pretty accurate. Were there some nuances Ares did not understand. Yes. The biggest one being why anyone would leave a prison full of science experiments and a seriously pissed off force ghost completely abandoned. Anyone could have stumbled on the place. Ares just about had, and if he would have been alone when all the bantha poodoo hit the fan he would have not made it out alive. That was why he was getting more money for this job, and turning the antiquities owner over to law enforcement.

At least she did not seem to be complaining that he provided the distraction she wanted. There was no one else that was going to do it anyway, though it was a massive mistake. As soon as he had stepped out, the apparition began to launch it's magical orbs of destruction his way. Right this was not something Ares was looking to do when decided to be the distraction, but what else was he supposed to expect. Ares had no idea how they were going to actually stop this thing. Penny was their best chance at getting all of them out of there, so as much as he didn't like the idea, he knew he had to keep her ass safe. What neither of them had expected was the fact the ghost would know someone had touched the statue.

The orbs simply quit. Ares knew that only meant trouble. His head turned to find that the ghost was not going after the one person they all needed, and Ares cursed, loudly. She was not going to find cover in time, not without help, so Ares took off running.

Maybe it was a dumb idea, but Ares ran straight for the ghost. For all Ares knew he could disrupt something by running through the ghost, and if that wasn't the case at least the ghost would be focused on him again. He should not have done it, but Ares leaped into the air and passed right through the ghost, and then as if he were desperate, Ares triggered the electroshock defense mechanism on his armor. The room seemed to light up when he did that. The ghost howled in anger, but it didn't seem to damage it any. His attention was back on Ares at least, and the orbs started flying his direction. If they could not outsmart the ghost then they needed to play to the basic emotions of every creature, and anger was always the best way to get something's attention.

"I cannot do that again, so please hurry and figure this thing out!"

Eyes burned with a violent emerald fire the moment the word 'sweetheart' came from his mouth, but there was a better time and place to discuss the merits of calling someone you barely know a pet name. Instead the blazing inferno in her eyes was calmed by a deep, purposefully obvious sigh and their attention turned to focus on the mammoth task ahead. This was it. In the split second before Ares created his distraction Penny cursed herself for getting into such an odd profession. She could have been a doctor in the best medical facilities on Naboo, or a scientist adventuring and studying the unknown regions. She could have been making a contribution to society without having her life threatened by something science couldn't even properly explain yet. Just as she pushed her way out of the cover of the broken pillar a thought passed through her mind. Hindsight was a female bantha.

There were a few desperate moments when Penny was sure she wasn't going to make the dodge. The smell of burning hair and slowly heated metal began to fill the courtyard with each violently thrown orb. With little time to think about anything but where to move next Penny almost didn't notice that the onslaught of explosives had stopped. Ares' voice alerted her to the change and she reacted immediately. Practically throwing herself behind the least damaged wall she could find, Penny's trained eye scanned the statue rather more quickly than she would have initially liked. There was little that stood out about it. It was made from some ordinary, unknown metal that had been polished to a shockingly bright shade of silver. It was almost mirror like in it's qualities. No markings stood out to her, there were no cracks in the material and as far as she was aware Aleema and Satal Keto looked just as she expected them too.

A thousand curses she knew, plus a thousand she didn't, ran through Penny's mind. Everything she knew about the force, Krath, Aleema and Satal Keto. It all ran through her mind at light speed, never settling long enough to distract her from what she was looking for. Once again her fingers ran over the smoothly shaped statue. Maybe it was less complicated than she thought. Maybe, just this once, the answer was simple. Penny decided it was worth a shot. She had minimal time to take action. The stranger had put himself into a serious situation to give her enough time to think this through, but for once she was ignoring the sensible side of her. It was completely out of character for her to trust a gut instinct like this, but there was little to lose. Penny withdrew from her hiding spot with a little shake in her legs. If she was wrong that would be it. No second chances. The team would have to abandon the mission and Penny would have put them all in an untold amount of danger.

'HEY! YOU... THING.' Penny screeched out at the ghost in an attempt to catch it's attention. The thing was still reeling from having a full grown man burst through his ghostly figure, but he could hardly ignore the flash of light that bounced off the shiny silver statue. She brandished it lazily, letting it slide around in her hand as she waved it through the air. It was all intentional. The thing took a step forward and stretched a smoke covered hand out toward Penny. Without any hesitation, and rather suddenly, she threw the statue firmly onto the solid stone ground. When it reached the floor, rather uncharacteristically for metal, it smashed into a thousand tiny pieces just like an expensive vase or a mirror would have done. Chunks of razor sharp glass whizzed through the air, creating a tinkling noise that sounded rather like rain, but Penny wasn't concentrating on that.

Leftover in the rubble was a crystal growing an aggressive shade of red. It appeared to be the only thing Penny would look at despite the fact that the ghost had raged the moment the statue left her hands. This thing had transferred it's life force into a crystal and projected itself using the Krath referencing scripts inscribed on the pillar. With a rather smug look on her face Penny lifted her boot and brought it down onto the crystal with a satisfying crunch. An ear piercing scream, like steam being released from a kettle, burst forth from the ghost. Slowly and rather anticlimactically, the ghost and it's scream began to fade into the background. 'What a load of fuss over nothing...' Her voice was thick with sarcasm as she shot Ares a rather impressed smile through the smokey remains of the monster that had previously stood between them.

Ares lost track of which wall the annoying, yet devastatingly beautiful, woman ducked behind. All he knew was that the window was short for all of them. He had bought them just enough time to get it right once, and he knew that. Did the rest of the team? Whether they did or did not, it was time for Ares to direct traffic while everything else was going to hell in a handbasket, almost literally. Pressing his finger to the device in his ear, Ares decided it was time for their final push. Penny was going to get this right, or they were all going to die. It didn't really matter to Ares anymore. If they were going to go down, they were going to do it fighting.

<<< "Circle up and do not let them flank you. At this point I wouldn't be too concerned about getting them back in their cells, just send these creatures to whatever version of hell you believe in!" >>>

He knew she was going to be pissed that he was telling her team what to do again, but one thing was glaringly obvious, no one else was. For whatever reason they had looked to him for leadership, and Ares was not going to let them down. Everyone in his squad came home, even if he had to carry them out. This was not his squad, but it was for the moment. So much for working alone. It did not matter where Ares went or what he did, this kind of life always seemed to find him. He sighed to himself as he was coming to terms that war and violence was not going to be something he could avoid in life any longer.

A pleased smirk tugged at Ares mouth as the strike team actually did as they were told. They were not a bad group of soldiers, and he would definitely be apologizing about insulting their ability if they got out of this. All they needed was some guidance, and Ares was confident that he could give that to them. After seeing all of this, he was not going to be able to go back to a "normal" job anyway. Whatever this thing was, and whatever this group did, it was doing something for the greater good of the galaxy as a whole. Ares wanted to be part of something like that again.

There was not much time to muse on what he wanted. The demon ghost thing was still launching orbs at him, orbs he had to keep dodging.

"Whenever you're ready, sugar!"

If he had a name, Ares would not need to use a nickname, though he would just to annoy the hell out of this woman. Despite how feisty and snippy she was, Ares liked her. It was the brain, at least he would tell himself that he liked her for something other than the voluptuous chest she had no hope of hiding.

Her response was enormously risky. Stepping out she got the attention of the ghost and smashed the statue on the stone floor. What looked like metal was actually a lot more like glass. Penny had the ghosts full attention. A bright red crystal rest on the ground, and as the thing screamed, a boot crushed the stone into dust. Ares expected some kind of explosion, at least a spark or two, but nothing. The ghost simply vanished.

"I'll be damned," he said shortly after Penny shot a proud smirk his way.

He nodded his head in agreement. That was a lot of fuss over something that turned out to be anti-climactic. Ares smiled and winked at the woman.

"So I suppose this is as good a time as any for an introduction. Ares Stone, and sorry about calling your team ineffective. They actually aren't that bad."

Ares reached a hand out to shake. She destroyed the statue he had been after, so he was not getting paid for the recovery. There was no reason to cry over it, once he told the guy who hired him what happened, Ares would be able to demand some kind of payment for the risk at least.

Penny swept back a lock of chocolate brown hair that had come lose from her pony tail during the mildly dramatic scene she had just displayed. Considering he had just saved her life on two different occasions, Penny thought it best to let this whole 'sugar and sweetheart' business go. A quick glance told her that none of the team had been injured, which was a massive relief, but they had lost something important in the process. Gingerly, and with a large portion of regret taking over her expression, she lifted the sharp heel of her boot away from the crushed remains of the crystal. The chaos under her shoe was far less than the chaos that had taken over the courtyard, but it hurt Penny almost as much. 'It's a shame about the crystal. I would have liked to study it intact.' Rolling her shoulders back to loosen her aching muscles she directed her gaze to the man she finally knew as Ares.

Her lips pursed slightly, the man named Ares still irritated her slightly but the fact remained. He had saved her life twice. 'Penny. Penny deWinter.' With one swift step forward she reached out her hand to meet his in a firm handshake. 'I suppose things did get slightly heated back there. Though I don't think they'll thank you for that comment either. They're actually highly trained. Some of them worked for years to get to be here today.' For a moment Penny stood and simply stared at the man who had willingly risked his life on several occasions, for both herself and her team. The events of the past few hours ticked over in her head like an old black and white holofilm. Ares had been brave and commanding, and for the most part her team seemed to respect him. After a few quiet moments of reflection Penny opened her mouth once again.

'You're not half bad, I suppose. Though next time I suggest a little more protection and a little less of the antsy teenage attitude? It's not that you don't suit it, it's just better reserved for the lower ranks.' Offering no explanation to her sentence, or to the fact that she had assumed he would be sticking around, Penny wondered over to the spot where the apparition used to be. 'T5...' She called out, addressing one of the armour clad soldiers to her right. '...do me a favour and fetch the atmospheric detector. There should be some good samples around here. The crystal shards need collecting along with any remains of the statue you can find. Cams out, leave no stone unturned. Let's move it people.' Her voice snapped at the end. Penny might not have been able to lead and guide the troops into battle but she was a dab hand at the data collection and clean up that followed. After all, that was her job.

Just as she reached out to swipe her hand through the air Penny felt the tingle of eyes on her back. Ares seemed to be standing behind her like a lost lamb. One of her trademark sighs left her lips as she span on the tips of her toes. The armour around her shoulders creaked as she drew her arms behind her back, wasting no time gracing Ares with an expectant look. 'Well? What are you waiting for? We don't have much time, Central Command will want to hear from us soon.'

Penny, it was an interesting name, obviously short for something. Ares was determined to find out, but for now it seemed there were other things going on around him. Her shot about the troops was fair and warranted. Ares nodded at the chastisement. That still did not stop a sigh from escaping his lips. He was better, and he knew it. Treating a team of people as if they did not know what they were doing when he had no knowledge of the specifications of this team's training or objectives. His assumption had been made based off one encounter, and Ares made no attempt to argue why he thought they were unskilled. This was a spanking Ares had to take.

The compliments which followed left Ares a bit confused. It seemed like something one would hear after a job interview or a demonstration of one's military prowess. Part of him wanted to assert that he was "damn good" but thought better of how cocky that would make him seem. Then there was the words "next time." Was there even going to be a next time. Yes he saved her ass twice, but that did not mean she owed him a job. Though, Ares was not going to turn it down. This team was into some pretty next level stuff, and that only became clear the more Penny took control of the scene.

What she was not equipped to do in battle she certainly could do when it came processing a scene. Something changed in her once her part of the assignment came into motion. The entire team snapped to as if they had not been leaderless for the entire fight. Ares stood there a bit dumbfounded on how different she seemed, how comfortable she seemed in this part of the job. He shook his head and chuckled a bit, though clearly missed some of the orders were for him.

"Waiting for," he questioned as she turned to see why it appeared as though he was not following her. "Wait... did you just offer me a job here?"

That should have been a bit more obvious, and before she could answer the question, Ares moved into step with her. Hopefully she was going to explain exactly what it was they were doing, who they worked for, and where they got the credits to bank roll such a secretive and well outfitted paramilitary unit. At this point Ares did not even think about the pay, he simply holstered his side arm and slung the rifle back over his shoulder.

"Right two things then... first... you let me run the strike teams and two... we gotta teach you how to fire a weapon..."

'Yes, I am offering you a job. Though you won't just be working with this team. Are you always this slow?' Her green eyes flickered with no shortage of amusement. They'd have to work on that, of course. There was nothing to suggest he would be like this in a dangerous situation, in fact he had proved he wouldn't several times over the past few hours, but still. The company she worked for was fast pace, both in terms of acquiring "things" and in terms of knowledge. He would need to buck his ideas up if he wanted to fit in. 'Yes to your first thing, that's literally the description of your job. You'll be in charge of the various teams we have back at central command. All of them are military trained and all of them are here to protect the... Well. We'll go into detail about your employers later. Think of yourself as the Chief of security operations or.. General of the troops if you prefer.' When the following words left her mouth she accompanied them with a slowly raised, well pruned eye brow. She went so far as to lower the atmospheric detector she had been brandishing for the past five minutes. 'The second thing? Not a chance. I study life in the Galaxy. I don't murder it, even if it's trying to murder me. That's what I've hired you and the team for. Plus you'd have better luck teaching a bantha to walk through a china shop.'

Penny once again turned on her heel to face the spot where the apparition had been. The atmospheric detector creaked and groaned as the mechanics inside began to whirr again. The other members of the team were bustling about setting up the equipment properly in the courtyard. They would handle the general clean up, moving stones and bricks to clear the courtyard and taking pictures of anything note worthy. Penny would do the complex things. Reading the machines, noting down spikes or changes in the atmosphere, she was first call on anything to do with science or alien technology. She was in the thick of it. 'Essentially and usually...' She spoke as she worked, raising her voice only marginally to be heard over the equipment. '...your job will be to dive in head first and clear any danger. Then I follow behind and do all the complicated science things. Anything we find we document and report. But again, details can be discussed later. Now is not the time or the place.'

"I'm not slow at all," he said in response, "but I am a bit confused. I mean just a few minutes ago you were ready to bite my head off with your snark, and I was ready to smack you for it."

Ares shook his head, a bit dumbfounded he had said that out loud, but it was the truth. It was clear she did not like him per se, but he had a feeling this job was not dependent on his likability. Ares was not liked by many, but that was never his primary concern. Penny got a first hand witness of what his primary concern was when it came to being on the field, albeit unintentionally.

"Right, probably should not have said that... I've been working for myself a long time now, so I'm used to saying what pops in my head most days."

He was going to have to work on keeping his size 12s out his mouth a lot more often.

His eyes scanned the scene for the first time since the fight was over. All of them did a pretty good job of wrecking the prison. Had Ares wanted to try and get the science experiments back into their cages he would not have been able to. Hopefully Penny was going to be okay with him making active calls like that on the field, because the look in her eyes as she surveyed the remains of the crystal and the bodies around the room told him this wasn't exactly a success in her books. It made more sense as she explained her position in all of this. She was a researcher. Ares could have guessed as much based on the fact she could not handle a blaster properly. That still needed to be remedied.

He shook his head and crossed his arms when she refused his second condition.

"Look, with all due respect. It seems like to me that you are the best asset here because of what you do. You realize had I not come in when I had you would be dead. You froze with that blaster pointed right at that thing I killed, and what if I'm not around when that happens again, or some surprise poodoo goes down? You don't need to be an expert, but you need to be able to not freeze. That's all. What you do with it is up to you, but you are going to prove to me you can handle the gun you carry."

His job would be running into danger. What else was new. Ares nodded.

"Not a problem. So, tell me what it is you guys do."

Penny gritted her teeth. Like it or not she would be working closely with Ares for the foreseeable future. Why was it that all the members of her staff had to be the most grating people she had ever met? Her shoulders shrugged gently at his comment. 'It's okay. We've had a wild ride of it today. I have dumped you into this mess without a word for explanation but...' She turned to face him and, instead of keeping her distance, Penny took a few exploratory steps toward him. Her emerald eyes scanned the lines etched into his face as she spoke. '...I promise you all will be explained. For now, just trust me. I might be snappy and rude but I have never left a member of my team in the darkness unless it was absolutely necessary. I promise you'll know what this is all about soon enough.' The feeling of guilt was something she couldn't avoid. In her mind, the most irritating and unnecessary process was not knowing what was happening around her. She couldn't and wouldn't imagine how it must feel from Ares' perspective.

Continuing with her work, she listened closely to the short speech Ares was making about the value of knowing how to shoot a blaster. Without even thinking about it Penny shrugged her shoulders and placidly spoke. 'I've hired you, and the rest of the team, for a reason. That reason is so I don't have to touch or even look at a blaster if I can help it.' Her teeth gritted together gently. In truth, there was one thing she wasn't really willing to admit to the stranger still. She was absolutely useless at aiming one. When she had first enlisted in Project Overmind they had forced her to go through mandatory training. Luckily she held enough merit in other areas for the firing range test to be skipped over, but until she learnt how to hold a gun and aim a blaster properly she was strictly forbidden from carrying one. Today had been an exception to the rule, the first in her years of working for PO. Usually all the dirty work was done by the time she got near the location. 'I just don't think it will work out.' Penny spoke with her teeth still gritted, trying to make it clear it was not a subject she wished to talk about any further.

'Look, take some of the team and explore the rest of the area. We still haven't been through the whole south side of the prison. We'll join you once we've finished up here. T3, 5, 6, 9 and... 13. Go with Ares.' Penny wafted her hand in the direction of the nearest corridor. The bars that used to cover the entrance were twisted and bent in impossible ways for the solid metal they were made of. 'Someone will have a spare earpiece for you to use. Let us know if you get into any trouble.'

Penny stepped closer as she began to tell Ares that everything would be explained soon. Perhaps other men would have taken matching steps backward to keep the difference, but Ares felt like she was sizing him up, studying and observing him for a reaction. Ares was never one to back down, even when it was in his best interest. He may begrudgingly do it when he had to, but Ares was not the sort of man to give up his position easily. He simply nodded, knowing that answer was going to have to do for now. In time she would tell him everything he needed to know. At the moment it seemed her mind was completely occupied with the task at hand.

His eyes did roll at her refusal to learn a second time. Ares had waited for her back to be turned, but it was clear that this one was as stubborn as he was. This was going to be a wonderful working relationship if that was the case. Even the sarcasm was dripping in his own thoughts on the matter. This Penny was going to be a tough one to crack, but no one under his care was going to be on the field unarmed, and if he had to go above her to get what he wanted, then he would. She had to have someone that she was working for.

Ares would have continued to push the issue, but Penny seemed eager to move on from the conversation. She was so eager in fact that she decided to get rid of him altogether. He mumbled something under his breath that was indiscernible, and nodded to each of the team members put in his charge. It was interesting how things worked. T6, T13, all the team members had a number as opposed going by rank or last name. Every group was different, and it would take some getting used to, but Ares would get there. These were his men now after all. Penny had literally thrown him into the deep end of something he knew nothing about.

"Yes, ma'am," Ares answered with a slight amount of sarcasm. One of the agents produced an earpiece for him, and Ares instinctively put it into his right ear, replacing the comm device he had been wearing. "Look for more supernatural crap, and if we can't handle it call in the one person to save my ass who can't properly discharge a weapon. Sounds like a solid plan."

Ares turned and chuckled as he headed toward the new room they had not cleared. He was too proud of himself for that last comment to wait for any kind of reply.

The exposed corridor had been blocked off with bars. Of course that was a universal sign to stay out. Either they wanted to keep something locked in, or they wanted to keep people out. Regardless Ares was certain this was a bad idea. The job seemed like it was going to be walking into one bad idea after the other. An odd feeling struck him as the grew closer to the room. Something weird seemed to awaken inside the soldier after leaping through the ghost. There would be time to figure that out later, for now they had go into the room.

Ares pulled a light off his utility belt and pushed the door open as he turned it on. He expected to have some creature jump out at them, but as he pushed the door open and the dust settled, nothing happened. The rest of the team seemed to know what to do and pushed ahead to clear the room. Calls of all clear came as the agents checked the different parts of the room, and by the time Ares walked in they were set.

His eyes grew wide as he let them wander about the room. It was a mess of cobwebs and dust which settled on the stone shelves and the various tools which sat on the table. Some shelves contained jars of perfectly preserved body parts and others contained different gems similar to the one which Penny had crushed. He was not sure if this was something Penny would want to see right away or not, so he raised his hand to the earpiece.

"Penny, I think you're gonna want to see this. I'd let the others finish processing the main hall. I think this is where that thing did his experiments..."

Once the sound of six pairs of feet had faded into the distance Penny let her muscles relax. The smirk that appeared on her face couldn't be helped. It was like someone had attached fish hooks to the corners of her mouth and pulled. He had some cheek to him. He was free to have that one, for now. No official contract had been signed and she wasn't technically his boss yet, and she had to admire how quick-witted was. She'd be dammed if she let him know that though. The only credit he'd ever get would be the soft snort of amusement that escaped her nose and travelled through the commlinks. As she had been saying for the past ten minutes, there was little time to waste. Central command rarely liked to be kept waiting. Time passed by as it always had once Ares was out of the way. Penny sank herself into her work, relying entirely on the team surrounding her to notice anything strange.

The sound of the commlink firing up always made her eye twitch, doubly so considering it was Ares' voice that spoke up. Instinctively, her head turned to face the corridor she had seen him disappear down. Penny turned to the remaining part of the team, giving them a gentle nod as she headed for the dark entrance. Her boots tapped rapidly on the poorly made stone floor. Partly due to the discovery of the laboratory and partly due to a deeply ingrained fear. Penny had always hated the dark. She had seen things the things that lived in the dark and wanted no part of it, if she could help it of course. The quick beat skidded to a sudden halt the second her she lay her eyes on the jars illuminated by the high beam torches on the teams armour. Her jaw dropped, followed by a slight squeak of surprise and delight all mashed into one.

'You weren't kidding...' Was all she managed to stutter out as she made the slow approach to the ancient shelves. Her fingers reached out to the nearest jar and brushed away the film of dust that had gathered over the years. 'Well I'll be damned.' She took the smallest step to her left, allowing the team and Ares to see the content of the jar she had uncovered. Inside was a preserved head that looked remarkably like the apparition they had just defeated. 'He must have been through a hell of a lot to get to that state of existence.' After a short minute to let the rest of them take in the sight, Penny reached out and heaved the large jar off the shelf. Just as she was turning to place it on the large wooden desk that took up most of the room Penny's eye caught something. Etched deeply into the stone walls, tucked neatly away behind the jars decorating the shelf, appeared to be runes similar to the ones they had found in the courtyard.

Penny's expression, hidden from view of the team, lit up like a fireworks display. Her voice quivered as she spoke four words. 'Go get the cams.'

Ares had no idea what to make of what he was seeing. Sure he knew that there were people in the galaxy that were capable doing some pretty evil, twisted, and demented things. What Ares also did not understand was why this group of people were trying to catalogue everything they found. The devices Penny and the others were using seemed foreign to him. Everything was going to make sense with context. Ares had to keep telling himself that. Had anyone told him he was going to be waking up and fighting a ghost and his science experiments, he would have laughed and thought them a little crazy. Now, Ares was having to wonder how much of the stories he heard as fairy tales growing up were actually true.

Penny seemed to be an entirely new mood when she walked into the room. For once, Ares felt as though he had done something right in regards to how things had been going with this woman up to this point. Other than saving her life it was easy to say the rest had been a total disaster, not that Ares cared, or he was telling himself that. At best he was trying to convince himself that he was not attracted to the snarky, rude, and intelligent woman. Her smarts were as attractive a quality as her beauty, and neither was something he was going to admit to.

The way she looked at the head as though they had found a treasure intrigued him. Ares had to admit to himself that everything about this woman intrigued him. A bit of dust flew into the air as she sat the jar on the desk, but his attention was not on the dust cloud at all. "I think it might be best if we do not dwell on how that happened," he suggested as she turned back to the shelf. It appeared as though she was going to reach for something else when her eyes spotted something on the wall.

'Go get the cams.'

"You heard the woman," Ares said to T3 with no idea where the cams were. "The rest of you carefully clear off this shelf and help me move everything out of the way."

Ares tapped Penny on the shoulder and kindly indicated for her to move and direct some traffic. He was pretty sure that whatever she had found was more than a few runes behind a jar with a head on it. No, they needed to clear the shelves and see if there were more runes. If everything about this group was fast paced then they needed to move quickly. Ares had no idea what was going to happen when they got done, and that did not matter. Penny wanted a recording of the runes, and she was going to get them. Ares guessed it was going to become a project for her.

"All set up, sir," T3 replied after a few moments had passed.

"We're all set, Penny, ma'am, whatever I'm supposed to call you."

Without even taking her eyes from the deeply ingrained runes, Penny spoke. Her mouth moved quickly and her tone was plainly layered with an indescribable excitement. 'Oh, but Ares, dwelling on such things is my job.' There was a hidden hunger behind her words, a curiosity that burned like a never ending flame. In moments like these you could almost see it behind her eyes, it seemed to brighten them to an impossible neon green. There was no shyness to her when the subject of knowledge came around. She searched for it all, drank it in without question, no matter how gristly or macabre it might seem to others. Ares' tap on her shoulder caused her to startle a little, hardly surprisingly considering how engrossed she seemed in the walls. 'Sorry, I'm not waiting this one out.' A grin formed over her face, which was shot in his general direction. She stepped a little closer to the object of her curiosity, placing the tip of her boot onto a rough ledge the crudely carved shelves. Grunting softly, she pushed herself up on her forearms to gain access to the very top shelf. With her other arm, and with a little more effort than she expected, she swept the jars aside and pressed the button on her high beam to illuminate the wall.

'This has to be the most interesting thing I've ever seen.' Ares didn't know it, but coming from Penny that was seriously saying something. 'We'll have to come back for these walls later. Oh well, the pictures will have to do for now.' There was no sarcasm in her tone, no questioning lilt at the end of her sentence. She was serious. There was no limit to the Project's power. Eventually they would come back and extract the room from the abandoned prison. For now, however, it was more amusing to leave Ares in the dark about that particular fact. The tips of her nails traced the runes gently, feeling out each line and curve that made up the complicated letters. 'This is incredible. I can't translate it all now but it looks almost like a journal of some sort. A whole rooms worth of information on that thing we just fought back there. Mostly the ramblings of a mad man but the things we could learn from this. Fascinating.'

After five minutes, which seemed to fly by from Penny's perspective, she slipped down from the shelf and backed up behind the cams to allow the team to work. Her arms crossed over her chest and the broad smile on her face seemed to be glued there. 'Dr. deWinter if you want an official title. It's probably best off you use that when we return. You did save my life twice though, so Penny is fine for now.' It was probably the only acknowledgement she would give Ares on the fact that he had done her a massive favour. After all, she was eventually going to pay him for all this trouble.
