Secret Identities

Ok. So, I've run into another dilemma with a character idea. This character has a sort of Bruce Wayne / Batman dynamic going on. I'm unsure if I snould make one character account and just hope people roll with it or just make two seperate character accounts for the different personae.

Out of 160 characters....

like a good 20 of them are aliases of other chars...

There are people on chaos who didn't even realized they rp'd with a char that was really an alias of another. ^_^

And yes, golden rule: Never tell anyone that they are an alias unless they manage to figure it out icly.

Unless you constantly write with one person or make it obvious, few (if any) seem to figure things out.

I think the only people that believed Daella was a legit Sith Lord before the Invasion of Coruscant just happened to dislike me in general. Of course, me starting the One Sith with Alric probably played a part, hence this fact that I always love playing with: A character can only know what his/her Writer knows.

Also, keep in mind that there are hella players out there who will bypass your 'secret identify' with the 'Oh i have a force power that lets me see who you really are'. Or some other means of meta.

Still, go for it. Just be wary. Chances are someone will find out who you are just because they can lol

I've actually heard of people using a sub-account as an alter ego of their writer's account before. Honestly, and I do really hate to say this, if you are going for that whole hidden identity motif I would use a sub-account as well. Like stated above, meta is a thing, and while many Role-Players out there would never use OOC information to determine IC action there are just as many that would.

The only thing I've had a hard time wrapping my head around is how ranking would work in that situation. For example; say your character is a knight level force user when you make your alter ego account. Would admins allow you to start your alter ego off as a knight since its technically an existing character, or would they enforce the rule and make you start at apprentice. Even more so, what happens if one of the characters gets promoted? Do you promote both since they're the same person?

I'm assuming admins would allow a person to use the same rank on both just for posterities sake, but I've just been curious since I read this thread.

I'd use two. If he or she is a Force-user, PM an RP Judge about leveling, though nearly every literary character from the Scarlet Pimpernel to Superman has an alter ego that's perceived as weaker than their secondary persona to help keep the secret.

As has been mentioned, [member="4ND-R0"], some people like to ruin other people's fun just for their own selfish ego-stroking and will use meta information to *their* advantage. Sad, but true.

If you were writing a self-contained story, it would be fine to let the reader in on your character's secret. In a public forum, though, not so much.

I would go with the suggestion of two accounts, with one account having all the perks and the other being the apparently weaker cover guise.

:D
