Self training

Self-train whatever you want to, but keep in mind that some abilities are extremely rare and that many are difficult to learn on your own. It should also be noted that you should keep the learning logical, meaning you also have drawbacks, fail before you master the ability, etc. It's the best to learn simple abilities on your own but if you want something more advanced, you should contact a Knight or a Master.

Every writer is allowed to write their character anywhere within their Rank Tier. That includes a wide range of proficiency and prowess. Some Padawans are new, young, and inexperienced. While other Padawans might be veterans, adults, and very well seasoned in their abilities. Giving some Jedi Knights a run for their money too. Many characters are just somewhere in between. It doesn't really matter.

Likewise, self training is really up to you. Your character can travel all the way from brand new Jedi Initiate all the way up to the moment's right before you make full Jedi Knight. Leaving anything in between as free game for you to write about or experience through roleplay. Pretty cool huh?

Training is also not specifically required for advancement in Rank either. Either by Faction or Independent RPJ promotion. However they are great ways to show activity, enthusiasm, and well written experience in the matters. So they always help and contribute gleefully. However, training threads are not Dev Threads. They do not require a specific amount of posts, an explanation of development, nor a specifically challenging quest to be overcome. Self training is literally any written expression of how your character is growing and progressing. It's just that easy and it's just that expansive.

To give examples, I've seen many different forms and formats of self training. Some are journal entries. Some are novel adventures with a cast of a hundred NPCs. Yet still others are 3rd party perspectives, repeatable textbook quizzes, or just poems written in rhyme. Oh yeah. I've seen a lot of different ways to describe "I trained myself". So the sky really is the limit.

Hope that helps give you an idea of my own personal experiences with 'self training'. Cheers and happy hunting! :D

actually many have demanded training threads for skills or abilities in duels this is fairly common to be threatened with reporting if you don't. So basically this is in part for character development and in part so I can shut up people every time they try to threaten people in those darn large battles. Given the culture within those events you just have to ensure they have no ground to stand on. [member="Jay Scott Clark"]

Ignore those people. You do not need training threads, although if you wish to do solo threads there are no limitations.

If you want to know the average post count, it is generally 200 words or so per post, 10-20 posts per thread.

[member="Braith"] unfortunately faction administrators and some site staff have supported the notion of people using your sheet to try to win duels so since this is the sort of culture I've come to find I have to play my sheet like this.

No site staff have endorsed a requirement for training threads. And unless there is a rule in an invasion which states you need a training thread, than you do not.

I did a total of one training thread from apprentice to Sith lord with my previous character and participated in 6 invasions.

The recent ruling on the subject was very clear - it's up to writers to decide what abilities they've learned and there is no requirement to list them.

It is unfortunate that in Invasions, there is often a call to 'prove' you have an Ability and haven't just decided to add it because it's useful in the duel. But going forward, the site supports a view that says they have no right to ask.

The site rules are specific (if sometime's unhelpful in their scarcity) - you do not need training threads or a tracker. It helps when showing your character has developed and is worthy of Knighthood or Master tags, especially if you're not well known in a Faction - but not even close to essential.

So [member="Braith"] is 100% correct. Some people like to have trackers and training threads (I do) but then that's me - a personal choice, not a site rule. As long as your choice of Abilities is 'reasonable' then you don't have to even have trained in the skill to say you have it - which is something we'll all have to get comfortable with and trust each other not to above the level of trust we've been given.

Self training is solely dependent on your imagination. Their are no limitations unless you make some. [member="Catherine Soja"]

Now im not saying as a padawan use Deadly Sight off the bat but no ability is off limits. Just use common sense.

[member="Jay Scott Clark"] why the delete since you intended to talk down to me it seems. I am not going woe is me I am saying fine if people demand the info fine but it means I'll pull up my entire mindset as a former Intelligence analyst. If people wanna talk down to me fine that doesn't scare me it tells me more about them. Namely that I already did what they did not expect.

[member="Corvus Raaf"] maybe you are right the impression I got at least rightly or wrongly was it was accepted and encouraged by the staff so the way things went my message I got was "you are on you're own." Which tells me I have to go be sure I got everything ready and set to defend myself.

Hun some people are douchers, that is a fact. Most aren't but enough are, ignore the douchers, write with people who make writing fun for you. If they get their panties in a wad because your character knows obscure force ability 41 without doing a masterful, 10000 post thread about how they journeyed over the misty mountains, slew a dragon, conquered a kingdom and then force farted Bethoven's complete works then that is on them.

At the end of the day this is al about fun, others and yours. But most importantly is yours, if you are not having fun you won't write. If you won't write you will leave, if you leave that's one less person to write with. One less persons = someone else gets bored and the cycle continues.

Still would be a better movie then twilight

though onto the real thing... self training is fun. I love it and try to do it every chance I get to challenge myself. It is easy to do a thread with someone but to keep it going by yourself, that can take some thought and dedication. Right now I am on part 8 of my jedi masters self training and likely if I add it all together somewhere past 90k (I have to count the words again with the new threads).. point is it isn't for everyone, Brier said it she only did 1 training thread, some have done 50 (or in my jedi masters case 365) others have done done. If someone is getting hung up cause you didn't do something they have done well can't change their opinion can only write for yourself. Soem of us don't enjoy pvp as much as others, or fleeting, or politics but some do.

The above attitude makes me cringe. Invasion or not, you might find that you get less contention working with your fellow dueling partners, rather than defensively trying to cover all of your bases.

Someone asks for a training thread? Your answer could be:

"Site rules state that I do not need to provide that. That being said, what exactly did you have a problem with, and can we agree on a compromise somewhere?"

Of course you can make your character do anything he or she wants, but at the end of the day, both writers will enjoy the duel more if there is give and take. Coming from the point of view of someone who has judged duels, your ability or inability to be fair to your partner may end up steering the outcome if it comes down to outside judgement.

Do I follow the example listed above 100%. There are times I felt that edits were unwarranted, so no. But sometimes upon reading back through my actions, I find that perhaps I unwittingly chained an attack that made it hard for other writer to feel as if he/she could fully resolve the attack, and I will offer to make edits.

We're all learning as we go :)
