Senate Reformation (Senators Only)

Khantor Ruu

Senator of Shili
Hiya all.

So how about we bring the Senate back. I was talking with some admins and roleplay judges and they think it could work again.

The Senate would gain some more leverage over how the Republic works, not having as much power and influence as the Chancellor and the Grandmaster but as a whole united group we can make the decisions of the Republic, much like it has in the past.

The Senate would still pass bills and legislation's like before, making decisions for the Republic, however before any of these laws can be put to the Senate to finalize, it must be checked over with the Chancellor.
The rules for this are still the same as Jack Harkness has gone over in this thread.

The problem with the Senate in the past was that majority of the members were alternate characters who were made to solely disrupt the Republic, ruining it fro within for OOC agendas. This cannot happen this time. We're being given this second chance so we cannot ruin it. We won't be given this chance again.

Another problem that seemed to have occurred last time was that Senators where extremely inactive majority of the time. If we are to make decisions that affect the faction, then it's decision makers need to be online a lot of the time, getting updated on what is happening within the Republic. So if you are to be a part of this new Senate, your activity has to be high, with you checking updates constantly.

So if we can follow these rules, then maybe it means more roleplay activity for Senators and other politicians. Making this site that more fun and interesting. I hope this gives those who want a more Senatorial aspect in the republic a chance to roleplay more and maybe increase the number of non-force users in the Republic.

So yeah guys, if you'd like to be a part of this new system, post below. Only if you are able to follow the guidelines above.

These will be updated also as faction admins look over this as well.

Is this all to your approval? Feel free to change anything.

I encourage attempts to get Senator character active and involved. Here are some things to know for those that weren't around during the Republic' overhaul.

First, yall need to understand what the Senate was like before Jack and Selena got in charge.
  • At first, the Senate was assumed to be the source of policy for the entire faction. This is not the case, but with Faction Administrators for the Republic at the time changing every few months people assumed it was so. Ideally, this would be fine if we looked at it from a purely IC point of view. Yet, it caused a few issues.
  • One issue was that the Senators didn't have an appointment or election process. In Star Wars, the Old Republic had Senators chosen through a variety of means. However, they had to vote in a certain way in order to stay in office. In the case of SWRP, there were few Senators that had anyone overseeing their actions.
  • Another issue was that any Writer could make a Senator and immediately vote. One example of this being an issue was when a Vote of No Confidence was made for a previous Chancellor and a Writer not involved in the Republic immediately created a Senator and voted in favor of No Confidence.
  • Faction Administrators at the time did not step in to stop the Senate attempting to unilaterally change aspects of the Republic that affected every member.
  • No Writer of a Senator understood parliamentary procedure - so every Senate thread was a chaotic mess where nothing made any sense.
  • Few Senators role-played outside of the Galactic Senate subforum or interacted with those that were not Senators.
Things got changed when Jack and Selena were elected by the entire Faction. Now:
  • Any policy change must be approved by all members of the Faction, not just the Writers with Senators.
  • The Faction Administrators will stop a push to change policy if it really is detrimental to the Republic (or at least, not something that would benefit member's enjoyment in the long run).
Those two changes resulted in most people clearly out of the Senate. The reason this happened could be assumed that the majority of Writers for Senators had no interest beyond pulling a Palpatine or role-playing in the Galactic Senate foum.

Now, nothing is preventing Writers at the moment from role-playing Senators. However, the Galactic Senate and making laws is now mostly fluff and lore building. Unless there is cooperation with the entire Faction, Senators will not be able to do something such as outlawing the Jedi Order.

So, really what this needs first is people that genuinely want to write Senators. From there, they have to begin not only interacting with each other but with everyone else in the Faction both IC and OOC. Otherwise, those Senators would just be sitting on their own little island by themselves.

Thanks heaps for the input @[member="Daella Apparine"].

So does that mean then that if a bill is to be passed, a public faction thread must be posted for people to vote? Or will only a few influential people vote on behalf of their subordinates?

Jack Sheltrak

Senator of Zeltros, Former Supreme Chancellor
@[member="Khantor Ruu"] for a bill to pass it must first meet the guidelines and then if it ins't seen as detrimental. It can be voted on, one of the faction admins will bring it up with the rest of the group. Then there will be a vote involving the entire faction in the senate section however anyone can vote. If you don't have a senator you random senator #19 from blah blah blah planet.

Indeed, the Senate should be active again. I am trying to be active with all of my characters, but somehow it happens, that I am not able to do that. I almost always miss great opportunities to RP with Jedi or Senators or other people because I most of my pressure goes to my main character. I am not always able to check my characters once in a day and go through all faction stuff, so I might not always be very active in the Senate.

But the idea to bring Senate back is good. :D

Does that mean that in theory any dedicated character can become a Senator?

More on subject, I'm on this site every day, and this character is my main. I've just put her on the back-burner while I wrap up the life and times of my character Ashelotte and ready her for a very long period of retirement. I would more than love to rise up to the role and I know it's more than just a fancy title; it's a responsibility.
