// Date: Primeday, 17th of Secundus. // Project: [REDACTED.] // Research File: # [REDACTED.] // Entry Number: 32.02. // Progress: Ongoing… Doctor Tyrna San, Personal Log. We were given an impossible task. The Brentaal system was overrun by an enemy that we couldn’t fight. Our weapons were all but useless against these ethereal foes. If it wasn’t for the Jedi and their abilities to wield the Force, I fear the battle and subsequent withdrawal from the system would’ve been an absolute disaster. However, despite this tragedy… the countless losses… We still have hope. Through our studies of these Netherworld Portals, and through the efforts of a Cadre of souls who braved the hellish landscape of hell itself, my team found itself in possession of something… extraordinary. A shard of the Dagger of Mortis. The very blade that was said to hold the potential to slay the Gods themselves. Whether those fictitious beings were Gods in any sense of the word was up for debate, but the power that I felt when I held that Shard was… undeniable. The shard’s potential was something that we could use for the betterment of life itself as we fought against the rising tide of darkness. The possibilities were endless. However, we had little time. Alliance High Command wanted a solution, and the fastest way to achieve that goal was to crystallize the shard, and harvest it’s offspring. So, that’s what we did. We sped up the process for the first batch. We were able to create enough focusing crystals to equip the first, and only wave. Because of this rush, those crystals wouldn’t last forever. They’d crumble to dust after the dust settled. But, should they survive… Should they be victorious… We’ll have more waiting for them. If not, then perhaps we’ll have enough to fight for another day. |
Birthed by what only could be described as mad science, the Shards of Mortis were designed as an upgrade to conventional weaponry, to give their wielders a fighting chance against the countless legions of monsters and devils spawned by the realm of Chaos, and their legion of mortal agents. At its core, the Shards of Mortis were synthetically grown Kyber Crystals that housed the barest trace of imbued Force-sensitivity. Much like their counterparts that were naturally grown, or harvested for use in Lightsabres, the Shards of Mortis acted as a focusing crystal for the weapon it would be housed inside.
As one would expect, the Shards granted different capabilities to the weapons they would be installed within. Should the Shard find itself housed within a conventional energy weapon - the plasmatic particle bolt that was generated would find itself imbued with new, and interesting properties. Such as the abilities of striking, wounding, and even proverbially banishing Netherworld spirits from the Mortal Realm. If the Shards were fitted into a Lightsabre, those weapons would take on an ethereal glow, and act in a similar fashion to the legends that were attributed to purified weapons forged from motes of Silver.
Ultimately, the effects birthed by the inclusion of the Shards of Mortis were geared towards the wholesale destruction of the forces of darkness, and their mutated agents. While the mortal servants of Chaos wouldn’t be affected by the Synthetic Crystal like their monstrous companions, those that bore the touch of the Nether and the malicious denizens that dwelled within would find themselves stripped of the parasitic entity. Naturally this also included the relevant damage that would be inflicted by whatever weapon the Shard were fitted into, but if the shot wasn’t fatal - then there was a chance that the possessed individual could make an outstanding recovery if given the time.
Or, be repossessed by another nefarious entity down the line if they weren’t careful.
However, there was one issue that begged to be addressed. Was the item that the Galactic Alliance procured from the depths of the Netherworld truly a fragment of the Mortis Dagger? Or was the recovered relic nothing more than an object that was simply saturated in the conflicting energies of the Netherworld, and imbued with similar properties? Sadly, even with all of the compiled research and firsthand experience, none could accurately answer that question with any certainty. What couldn’t be denied, however, was that the Mortal realms finally had their proverbial in which to strike back against the powers of Chaos made manifest.
