Shh! The mods are sleeping, post helpful factory survival tips!

"Nobody cares for the woods anymore."
So, I've learned a thing or two since first running the gauntlet that is the Tech Approval System. And I'd like to share the tips, because I don't think others should be wrongly shut down because of a misplaced comma. ("Got any beef, jerky?")

1. Put an "If deemed necessary" or something to that effect in the Dev Thread portion of the Approval framework. That way, you won't get denied if one is actually necessary.
2. Pull all the stops. Seriously. Describe your tech like you would to a person who has been blind since yesterday. Make sure it is clear that you are making a glass shard launcher, not a beer bottle cannon. Give your stats like this is some kind of roleplay game.
...
oh wait...
3. Be patient with the Factory Judges. All of them. They work their rears off just to make you happy with your little bit of tech. On top of that, they have staff responsibilities, other people to deal with, that one kark who won't stop posting the Hulk... So if they seem a bit harried, give 'em a break! If you feel like they wrongly denied your submission, take about an hour to cool off from the disappointment. Figure out why it wasn't approved. If you still feel like it was wrongly denied, talk to the judge. Ask if you can learn why it was denied at all. Chances are, they'll help you make it better. Or, you may find out they were in a bit of a temper. They'll apologize if necessary and get your tech back on track.
4. This sort of bleeds over from 3. If your tech is denied, and you really want it approved, SECOND CHANCE IT. Please. It's not worth the risk of being F - banned. If the judges still deny your second chance attempt, ask why. Don't be obnoxious, nor irritating. Be curious. And if all hope is gone - just stop it. There's probably an RP you need to get around to anyway. Do you really need the tech? Like... is it a do or die thing? Really?

So yeah. I've said my peace. Thanks for listening to my ranting. Or whatever that was.

I've only ever made one submission, but....

7) Look at the level and amount of detail others have had to put into their approved submissions. Look at several. Get an idea of what you're getting into when creating new tech/planets/species etc.

8) Don't act entitled. The ability to add to this site's lore is a privilege... an excellent privilege. Don't abuse it. Please.

10) For the love of all that is good in the world, ask questions. Relevant questions never hurt, questions are the journey to the destination of information you need, and hopefully save you from a little embarrassment and disappointment ... but please put them in the Factory Discussion forum. It exists for a reason.

11. Learn to recognize the difference between incidental power gain and intentional power farming. The Factory exists to add to the flavor of the site, to fluff out the world we RP in. Submissions with a rich background that provide more rich background for roleplay are smiled upon, and RPJs and FJs practically knife-fight each other to review them. Submissions that are pretty obviously just for better gear tend to get a glare and an obscene gesture.

12: Before you submit something to the site ask yourself "What does this do differently?" If it doesn't do something unique that isn't taken care of by something in Canon or somewhere else in the factory why are you putting it through? Is it going to be part of your story or is it just to get something?

13: Dev threads can be so many different things. If you want a sword your dev thread doesn't have to be "I put metal on the fire and strike it with my hammer" for ten posts. Go fight somebody and lose your blaster, facing your character into punching distance and showing him how weak s/he is without a blaster, prompting him to him to make a purchase. Take down a bounty and spend that fat paycheck. Get a friend and go the gym and learn space-kendo, resulting in you getting a sword for the next level.

14: If you aren't 100% sure in what you're doing then either put something up the factory discussion or hit up a friend and bounce off ideas. A second look always helps find mistakes, and a second opinion can help you fix balance issues or solidify your resolve on an issue.

15: Factions Judges, RPJ's and Admins are not always right, but they are 95% of the time and usually know what the hell they're talking about. If you think that they're being a little harsh on taking away this doodad here or that thimajiggy there then be calm. Tell them you're willing to make edits. Clearly state your case with links to canon, factory, or RL examples of why you think your thing is acceptable. Good manners and a strong argument will go a long way, but poor manners and a strong argument won't get you anywhere.

17. Before you sub or during judging, if you're concerned or have a question, feel free to ask away. Polite and relevant questions are always welcome and nice to see as it shows initiative.

18. Judges and RPJs communicate. If you get denied and feel like you're being slick by resubbing and getting a different judge, think again.

19. We do not judge pre-factory, HOWEVER if you have questions or want some help, feel free, but the judge helping you most likely won't be judging it so keep that in mind.
