Description: During a pitched fight, ships can become damaged and require time to enact repairs, but frequently find themselves under fire and unable to perform satisfactory repairs. To alleviate this, the S.A.A.T division began to plot ideas for a new kind of ship, one that had a single purpose; to shield ships as they prepared to flee the battlefield. The aptly named Shield-class cruiser was the result.

Despite its size, the Shield-class has very little in terms of crew requirements. In fact, the ship can barely afford to leave a planet before its supplies run low. This is because the vast majority of the ship's interior is devoted to either the ship's oversized reactor or one of dozens of shield generators arranged around a massive shield emitter. Most of the crew operate on one of two decks of the bridge. Because of the crammed nature of its components, the ship has no chance to perform any repairs in the field and must return to dry dock for any repairs beyond the most basic.

However, its performance in the field is well worth the difficulties. Projecting forward, the ship creates a shield umbrella with a full kilometer radius, though this leaves the ship open to attacks from the rear. The shield's strength is extraordinary, being able to resist full assaults from single capital ships for several minutes without strain to the system. However, the difficult nature of repairing the ship also exposes another vulnerability; even a glancing blow to the ship can severely damage the interior and short out the shield emitter. As a result, those in command of the ship are cautioned to deploy closely to friendly ships and flee as soon as trouble appears.

This ship scared me when I first looked at it. At first blush it looks like it's a fleet tank, preventing damage to your fleet from sustained capital ship fire. This isn't what it does at all. When I looked closer, I realized that 2km isn't that much area at all in a full fleet engagement - barely enough to cover the average ship, conveniently - and there's no mention of the shield being one-way.

With a proper understanding that this ship is extremely specialized in being able to protect a single ship at the cost of two ships' worth of firepower, I have no problem approving this.
