As the final vessel of the rejuvenated New Class Modernization Program, the second generation Shieldship was to be the Republic Engineering Corporation’s pride and joy. With the subsequent successes made with their more offence-orientated vessels, the Coruscanti Architects sought to revive the ancient Shieldship; and enhance its mission profile beyond its storied origins. While they were eager to keep the starship’s abilities to absorb the heat of a superheated star and harmlessly shunt the light away, there were other insidious designs they wished this new starship to fulfill. Thus, the Shieldship II was reborn again in the modern era with a host of improvements.
The starship’s purposeful duality would allow for new tactics on the starry battlefields across the galaxy, as these vessels could lend their defensive might to their allies and shield them from harm - as they tore into the enemy’s formation. Some would say that such a vessel was a herald of what was to come, as the cycle of warfare brought about new technologies, and gave new life to antiquated ideas. In many ways, the Shieldship - when paired with a long-ranged artillery vessel - would act as an ancient spearman upon the battlefield; should they act in unison.
However, this protective boon came at a price. With the vessel’s defences fixed forward - should a proverbial blade slip past its guard - it would effectively cripple the starship; once the weakened barriers collapsed. While it wasn’t the most ideal situation to find oneself in, the benefits far outweighed the cons; especially when the Shieldship was adequately defended by a myriad of escorts and interceptors.
