  • Electromagnetic Control: An ECM array allows the Sion-class to exert influence over the electromagnetic environment in a given battlespace, giving the craft a range of capabilities that add additional utility.
  • Alpha Strike: Armed with medium beam cannons, heavy beam cannons, and an outsized magazine of missiles, the Sion-class has a high armament for a small craft, making it a credible threat to virtually any starship and ground target.
  • Amphibian: The life support systems, electromotive field motors, and hydrostatic fields allow the Caldoth to traverse underwater and remain submerged for an indefinite period of time. In a pinch, this function could be used to hide from pursuing enemy forces or even to initiate a surprise attack!
  • Low Profile: The Sion-class has coatings on its hull which effectively lower the craft’s sensor profile and render it more difficult to distinguish against the backdrop, thereby making it harder to register and lock onto at range. However, this does not approach true stealth capability, since it does not grant true sensor or sensory invisibility.
  • Field Disruption: The Sion-class's field disruption system allows the craft to physically bypass a large warship's shielding so that it might fire directly on the hull. While this feature is limited in practical application to large vessels with conventional and non-conformal shielding, it is nonetheless a powerful technique that a skilled pilot could take advantage of to potentially lethal effect.

  • Automation: The Sion-class is supported by a suite of automated processes which govern its targeting systems, power systems, flight control systems, and yet more. In the event that these systems are somehow disabled, whether via EMP/Ion discharge, concentrated slicing, or in rare cases, jamming, the operating efficiency of the craft will be negatively affected.
  • Sensitive Passive Sensors: The passive sensor array on the hull of the Sion-class is an extreme boon to the pilot’s battlespace awareness, especially in conditions where the use of active sensors may reveal the craft’s location. However, they are also very vulnerable, as even glancing blows can destroy or disable the sensors on or around the affected areas. In essence, as the hull takes more hits, the Spyglass’ passive reception array will become increasingly ineffective.
  • Charge Out: The field disruption system disables the Sion's shields during the period of its activation.
  • Straight and Narrow: The coaxium injection feature of the ion engines provides a significant boost to speed and acceleration, but it compromises maneuverability while active. In addition, the system disables all weapons for the duration of its use.

Developed in secret at Malsheem, the first production model of the Sion-class Heavy Starfighter was the culmination of the Sith Empire's research into starfighters and was outfitted with state-of-the-art weaponry hooked up to Amaranth Crystal generators, higher-efficiency ion engines, and relatively robust deflector shields; thought the lateral shielding was noticeably weaker.

The Mk. II model of the Sion-class underwent major upgrades and changes as its design was overseen by First United Astral Engineering. Of particular note, the Mk. II variant eschews the Amaranth crystal generators in favor of the Ramuh-II power core as a secondary power source. The shields are also more balanced so that the lateral shields are now just as robust as the fore and aft shields.

While a sufficiently conditioned and trained pilot in the Symbiotic Ghost Link could operate all of the craft’s systems on their own, the Sion Mk. II generally required two individuals to operate at peak efficiency; a pilot and a rear gunner. Under typical conditions, the pilot operated the craft and the forward-facing weapons while the rear gunner operated the dual heavy beam cannon turret and the missiles. Although the pilot had the ability to fire all weapons, it was generally considered that the rear turret be controlled by the rear-gunner alone. Armed to the teeth, the Sion's weapon complement consisted of two medium beam cannons mounted at the ends of the lateral wings, a heavy beam cannon mounted at the base of the fuselage, a dual heavy beam cannon turret situated behind the pilot's cockpit, and eighteen ordnance hardpoints built into the fuselage.

Both occupants were connected to the Symbiotic Ghost Link effectively melding their minds with the machine when in use. This allowed both pilot and gunner to work seamlessly with each other and with the fighter, acting almost as if they were one entity. In its default configuration, the starfighter's yoke also consisted of two independent control columns with levered handgrips. These columns offered a higher range of motion and control over the starfighter, with strong haptic feedback allowing the pilot to maintain a greater sense of their surroundings. This coupled with the Symbiotic Ghost Link created an even stronger bond between pilot and machine.

The Mk. II version of the Sion notably includes programmable matter controls and ergonomics, so pilots and operators may elect to configure the cockpit with virtually any control scheme.

The Sion was equipped with an energy shield that protected the craft from conventional energy, solar ionization energy, ionic energy, and physical particulates. The energy shield was simultaneously polarized to allow the Sion's beam cannons and missile launchers to bypass through the interior of the shield while keeping anything from bypassing the exterior of the shield.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the Sion was its Field Disruptor system. This system, when activated, allowed the Sion to physically bypass deflector shields of capital ships and planets to attack them directly. However, when the Field Disruptor system was activated it deactivated the Sion's shielding, rendering the craft vulnerable to enemy fire until deactivated. The Field Disruptor system also could not bypass non-conventional shieldings like molecular shields and xythan force shields.

Phoenix Ion Engines propelled the Sion through the void of space, fine-tuned for exceptional and efficient energy output that allowed the heavy fighter to move at speed comparable with smaller fighters without a great detraction in maneuverability. The engines’ coaxium injection feature allows the craft to entirely sacrifice maneuverability for extraordinary speed at the pilot's discretion. This sudden burst of speed was achieved by a brief injection of an extremely small amount of coaxium directly into the ion engine's fuel system.
