- Description: A suspenseful holodrama created as a Holoflix original and distributed by the Corellia Digital Corporation, Sithier Things was originally an 8 episode limited series that aired in 855 ABY. After being approved for production as a holovid series, a second season aired in 857 ABY with the third and (to date) final season airing in 858 ABY.
- Author: Holoflix
- Publisher: Corellia Digital
- Reception: The initial critical response to Sithier Things was an unexpected blockbuster for the Holoflix label, generating substantial subscriber growth ahead of the company's projected quarterly earnings. The subsequent serialized holovid series received mixed reviews, with the second season achieving viewership numbers above that of the original. However, the third season went into production right before a writer's union strike on Selonia. With many of the later scripts for the planned 11 episode season unfinished, the director resigned and the executive producer left the project. The result was a poorly executed season that saw a sharp decline in ratings, leading to the show not being awarded a fourth season. Because of this, no official ending of the series' storyline exists, which has created a controversy of its own among the fanbase.
Sithier Things was originally a limited series consisting of 8 episodes, each with a runtime of 60 minutes. Due to the overwhelming popularity, the limited series was used to launch production of a second and third season. The second season followed the same format as the original, with the third season being expanded to a total of 11 episodes. Due to a drop in viewership and ratings during the third season, the show was not continued for a fourth season.
CONTENT INFORMATION
Is there such a thing as children of the light..?
Sithier Things was a Corellian mystery-suspense-horror themed holo-drama centered around a small group of children living on Coruscant on the eve of the Gulag Plague. The show uses frequent visual cues through the use of retro art, archaic props, and historical references to invoke a nostalgic realism toward the fictional recreation of four hundred years past. The first season focused on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy and the sudden appearance of a dangerously powerful Force Sensitive girl amid the seemingly supernatural events surrounding the spread of the galaxy-wide plague.
The investigation unfolded in a mix of horror and suspense that was balanced on the one side by the childlike innocence of the cast and the subtle play on many urban fears regarding Force Sensitives. Set in the fictional Shriek-Hawk District of Coruscant, in the shadow of the neigh omnipresent Jedi Service Corps research center, the story is told in such a way that nothing seems certain. Not the purpose of the research center, not the Jedi, or any of the other adults whose motivations are always clouded by the untrustworthy lens of the youngling perspective.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Sithier Things was one of the early Holoflix productions. The show was produced on the smaller stage of Studio 1B on Selonia, the Coruscant scenes were frequently shot on location in the underground metropolis. The famed holo-vid director Lan Cai was brought in as executive producer, and teamed with long time collaborators Joe Saisaichi for the music of the series as well as long-time friend Jorhn Mah for the writing. Casting was done across the Corellian system, with the core group of youngling actors being entirely unknowns. This enabled the show to work with the relatively low budget that they had at the time, and played a large part on the show's breakout success.
Once green-lit for a second and third season, the show continued to follow the same format while expanding on the complex nature of shoots to accommodate and better utilize a larger production budget. Despite strong ratings support for the third season, a Selonian writer's union strike in late 857 ABY left many of the scripts for the third season unfinished even as production deadlines for those episodes approached. Because the production was taking place on Selonia, Jorhn Mah was prohibited from taking part in finishing those scripts. Producer and director Lan Cai quit over the ensuing dispute, leading the company to transfer production to Studio 1A on Drall and rush the scripts to make deadline. As a consequence, the third season was viewed as a colossal commercial failure and was not revewed for a fourth season.
