Skirmish Update: Rework Flashpoints

Objective: Bring back Flashpoints in a manner that is relevant to the community and encourage major factions to hold hands.

Staff Effort: Minimal. Staff would only have to watch for obvious exploitations of this ruleset.

Suggestion: Revive Flashpoints as an upgraded skirmish once certain conditions are met. Flashpoints 2.0 exist in the following form:

When a skirmish grows to include at least three major factions, it is upgraded to a flashpoint.

Major faction participation, at a minimum, must be four writers per faction.

From the date of escalation to flashpoint, the thread has three weeks to reach a concluding point.

Flashpoints are not traditionally reviewed by staff. The leaders of the conflicting major factions will gather and decide a Victor.

The winning faction(s) are granted a boon for the month the Flashpoint was launched. Their final Dominion for the month is free and does not require any posts. However, this hex is still vulnerable to rebellions like any Third Dominion.

If the leaders cannot decide a Victor, then no faction is given this boon.

If it is clear that the participating factions are abusing this ruleset, they will be subject to losing an existing hex as a consequence.

Thoughts: When I think of Flashpoints, I think of the original invasion of Roche from way back in the day. That invasion involved everyone practically - the who's who of Chaos came out in droves and the thread had lasting ripples for months to come. In recent history, I think of Endgame as an example. Flashpoints, to me, are something that the entire site can get in on. A big brawl that rewards the winner in a huge way.

This would encourage factions who don't want to get into the invasion game to jump into inter-faction warfare at some level. It would also encourage collaboration between faction leaders and coming to a consensus regarding their own performances.

Frankly, the opportunities are immense here for a great time all around in my opinion. What do you think?

Interesting idea on the third dom.

The only hitch I see is where the faction staffs have to decide amongst themselves. How are victory parameters decided? Will they be flashpoint specific? Paper, Rock, Scissors? Dice Roll?

I’d love to trust that this would be fair, but I see it more like the pirates council in Pirates of the Caribbean where everyone votes for themself.

I like this idea.

But I also agree that this trust system is kinda faulty. What if two factions are collaborating to win through OOC hammering rather than writing? I can see this system being abused plenty.

There should be a sort of vote of no confidence type idea where a RPJ would have to step in.

This ruleset would encourage faction leaders to look at their performance honestly and to be adults about it. If the leaders can't agree on a winner, they won't make staff read another several hundred post thread - no one gets a benefit.

How each flashpoint is decided would be up to the faction leaders. If they want to do it purely based off PvP duels, for example, they can. Ships destroyed? Go for it. Princesses saved? Go bananas. Etc.

As a community, we have no problem reporting abuse, whether it is perceived or actual. Especially when it's from an opponent. Because of that, the final term of the ruleset is there: if there's abuse, you lose a hex that you already have. That's more than enough deterrent for any map-focused faction to reign it in, in my opinion.

As a community there's plenty people sneaky enough to get away with it. Losing a hex is a solid deterrent, but I still think a vote of no confidence type rule should be put in place as part of the structure.

The point of this ruleset is to encourage faction leaders to act like adults - and to not add any additional work for staff. I'd like to see this implemented without the need for RPJ judgment as a whole.

The point of it may to be to encourage Faction Leaders to act like adults. But that doesn't mean it'll work or that certain safety measures shouldn't be put in place. I understand that you don't want to create extra work for staff. But, they are staff because they can be trusted. Also, it's not a need for RPJ judgement, it's a safety measure just in case. Your rules ect would work in the same way however, if necessary a RPJ can be allowed to intervene.

I think that makes the most sense.
