- Bio-sensor: Both Sol and Astra contain a biological sensor tuned to Gianna Aegis’ DNA. If anyone aside from the flame-haired Jedi tried to use the blades they would shut down, and would not reactivate until she took hold of them again.
- Bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse: Both Sol and Astra were able to be used underwater without shorting out the blades.
- Defensive Crystals: Both blades were designed to excel in defence, the Etaan Crystals and the Lorridian Gemstones creating blades that would allow Gianna to better protect herself and others. The Etaan crystals would make the blades sing as they moved, creating blades that would create a flashbang effect when impacting another blade. Blasterbolts reflected off the blades would carry some of the resonance with them, giving an increased hitting power when redirected. The Lorridian Gemstones were imbued with the skills of the Lorridians, namely their ability to read the body language of others, allowing Gianna to predict attacks made against her and reacting to it faster, be it the swing of a saber or a shot from a blaster.
- Specialized blades:While the basic crystals in both Sol and Astra provided a solid defensive framework, John wanted to make each blade special and unique.
- Sol: It took a while, but John eventually managed to obtain shards of both of the Great Life Jewels, welding them together to form one crystal which could in installed into Sol giving the blade a golden-yellow blade. The joined shards would emit a powerful healing aura. John knew that Gianna would often find her way wherever she was needed, wherever there were injured and ailing, so wanted to make sure the weapon she could carry to protect herself and others would also allow her to take care of those around her.
- Astra: While Sol assisted with healing, Astra was a purely defensive weapon, the permafrost crystal inside it giving the blade an icy-blue colour as well as an aura of cold that the Jedi could shape and wield. The cold would slow many of her opponents, making it easier for Gianna to protect herself if forced to fight.
- The best defence is a good offence: There are times when circumstance can get away from you, where relying on pure defence isn’t enough. A lightsaber is a powerful offensive tool in its own right, but sometimes you need a little bit more. For situations like this, the blade contains capacitors capable of overcharging the blade and increasing their cutting power significantly. While overcharged the blades are able to slice through materials such as Beskar and Phrik that would normally shrug off lightsaber strikes.
- Cortosis will short the lightsabers out.
- The normal blades on the lightsabers are unable to cut through materials such as Phrik, Songsteel or Beskar.
- The Overcharged blades can only be active for a short period of time before the capacitors run dry, it will take time for the capacitors to charge again.
- While overcharged the energy coursing through the blades is such that the blades themselves become unstable, degrading their defensive qualities. It is impossible to know where a reflected blaster bolt will be re-directed, or indeed if they will.
- The Aura’s can’t be turned off, meaning that the blades will stand out as beacons in the force.
There was something about the snap-hiss of that coloured blade coming to life, the look of that energy blade, the plasma thrumming within the magnetic field. The lightsaber is the iconic weapon of the force user and with good reason. For thousands of years, the lightsaber has been present on every battlefield, in every conflict. In the hands of Jedi the lightsaber was a tool of defence of hope, wielded as a means to protect themselves and those around them.
Well, wielded by most Jedi.
Gianna Aegis was many things, a Jedi, a healer and the most important person in the Galaxy to John. She also had the uncanny ability to always end up in the middle of a battlefield tending to the sick and injured, it was part of who she was, the healer the carer. John had done his best to provide her with protection in the form of robes and artifacts, tools that could protect her while making her life just that little bit easier.
There was always that worry that Gianna would end up in a situation where she might be attacked, or be called on to protect those around her. John wanted to make sure that if such a situation were to arise Gianna would have the tools at her disposal to protect herself.
The actual construction of a lightsaber wasn’t the most difficult concept to manage, but John wanted to go a step beyond the normal.
Each saber was constructed with a songsteel hilt, designed to provide the sabers with a base that won’t bend or break and wouldn’t be damaged by attacks. The design of a lightsaber was so simple, so tried and true that John didn’t want to alter it over much. The bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse and the locking activator were both old technologies which were widely available and would provide the sabers with the basic utilities they needed.
The more advanced capabilities of the blades were built around the crystals used in their construction. The Lorridian Gemstones and Etan Crystals providing a solid defensive basis for the blades with the addition crystals each giving them their own flavour.
Sol and Astra were the blades of a Jedi, constructed by a master craftsman to protect and provide utility for one he cared about deeply.
