Surrounded by monsters, reavers, and terror, a single settlement was forced to adapt and endure. Luxury was overshadowed by duty. A united voice became a single vision. Under the direction of their Dominus, the people established a new empire at the End of the Galaxy. Their safety, hopes, and survival depend upon his leadership and the talents of his generals. This is the Heart of the Expanse: The Ascendant Throne!
OVERVIEW
Given the horrors of their surroundings, the gentle approach of democracy was detrimental to the peoples' longevity. Therefore, over time, the Dominus' leadership ascended into direct rule. This reality is tempered by the Common Law: a set of tenets that guarantee the living standards and rights of each imperial citizen. With this as its foundation, the Throne exists as the Dominus' various officers who accomplish the realm's daily operations.
Chief among these officers are the Domina - partner of the Dominus - and the Primi - the Dominus' personal generals. Both exist as direct extensions of the monarch's authority and assist in the supervision of all affairs. Next is the Master of Coin who manages the empire's finances, investments, Consul contributions, and informs the Dominus of the realm's budget. Lastly are the heads of the imperial divisions: Lord Inquisitor, High Admiral, and High General. (It is to be noted that, while not an official member of the Throne, the Archon of the Medjai Order enjoys an honorary seat.)
Working in tandem with the Throne are the members of the Court: Consuls, Praetors, and Magni. Consuls are planetary governors who swear fealty to the Dominus, vow to uphold the Common Law, and agree to make direct contributions to the nation's armies and coffers. In exchange, the Throne affords each Consul near-absolute autonomy in their governorship and agrees to hear their desires in matters of national import. As a result, so long as the Dominus' call is honored and civilian life is not abused, Consuls often align, oppose, trade, and scheme with each other - and beyond.
Praetors are siblings to the Consuls - as their desires also enjoy the Dominus' consideration. Where the differences lie are in the contribution to the empire. Praetors are honored affiliates of the nation, be it business partners, military allies, or otherwise. In exchange for services rendered, each Praetor is guaranteed to have their voices heard.
The Magni, however, are effectively identical to the Consuls - but with one key difference. Each is a member of the Imperial Family and rules their world in accordance to the Throne's desires. Effectively, a Magnus is also a direct extension of the Dominus' authority. Overall, the Throne only directly controls one system via the Magni. This region has, befittingly, become known as the Crownlands.
As a whole, the Throne epitomizes the nature of the Ascendancy. Here - as well as the rest of the empire - one's station is determined by loyalty, effort, and one's contributions to the whole. Nothing is given - everything is earned.
